Yo Yo Honey Singh has really been going places in Bollywood recently. From Lak 28 Kudi to Brown Rang to songs in big commercial movies like Cocktail, Chennai Express, Khiladi, Yaariyaan and now Bhootnath.

He's been called a "youth-icon" and he's said in an interview that he's a true representation of the youth.

But while his music seems catchy to me, his lyrics are ridiculous to sometimes infuriating. Especially Blue Eyes:

So the girl has blue eyes that are fake - they're contact lenses. And this whole song revolves around contact lenses then? An illusion of beauty?

The only thing the male character seems to notice about a girl is her "bomb figure" in her "choti dress" and her "glossy lips". The main focus of most of his songs are always women's bodies.

He basically picks her up on the middle of the street and starts talking to her. Not creepy at all...😳

And the girl is apparently supposed to be impressed by the fact that he has a white Lamborghini so now she's a gold-digger too.

And the cherry on top of all this is when he tells the girl "Padhne likhne ka tera na koi plan hai, paas kara doon, phone jhooma doon. Teri Principal bhi Yo Yo ki fan hai." So now the girl is incapable of passing out of college as well? The male is dominant figure and it's assumed that she is completely dependent on him. The woman's role is defined only in relation to the man's role.

I recently took a Gender Studies course and I think I've turned into a little bit of a feminist now. But I thought this could be a healthy debate topic.

Do you think Yo Yo Honey Singh actually represents the youth? Do you think Yo Yo Honey's music is demeaning towards women? Do you feel it objectifies women? What are your feels overall of the entertainment industry on setting impossible ideals for women and young girls?

haha yeah, I think most people don't think too much about lyrics. But then that brings the question of unconsciously accepting the lyrics too? So songs can still impact you even if you don't consciously accept them.

Well i think unless its really disgusting reading too much into todays music /lyrics it would drive one crazy, and i dont at many times understsnd the lyrics, and most songs these days have double meanings, its rare you will get clean soothing songs!!
And those dont click much, people want hip hop music and yes many times it potrays women as sex objects!!

.Anamika. You always make good posts with valid points 👏

I think his music is catchy and fun..I do agree with you that his song lyrics are kinda messed up but what's the difference between item songs and his songs? There's nothing classy in "Pinky hai paise walon ki" or "Tooh" or "Sheila ki jawaani" lol the only difference is that people overlook item songs cuz it's women who look beautiful and are allowing themselves to play "object of desire" vs him objectifying women. Both are just as bad.

But atleast he's brought a new style of music to India. When have we had a desi artist who knows how to make good music and rap/bring hip hop in?

His tunes are catchy.. you gotta admit 😆

He is a rapper, though not one of the big ones. Rap in of itself tends to have excellent beats and lyrics that make your pulse rise and not in a good way. Objectification of women, calling women gold diggers, the n-word and so on.
There has been a lot of conversation about rap and it's effects on women. Oprah had a show a while ago where black females confronted rappers and it was very interesting. Google 'Hip Hop summit'

I am not making excuses for YoYo. Far from it, he is trying to fit in as a rapper and copying the culture. This is a bigger part of the rap culture unfortunately.
