Been living under a rock or so, and finally got around to watching Kites last night.
Why do you suppose it flopped? I actually liked it, and thought it was pretty successful in exciting me, and keeping me guessing what will happen. it also helped that two sexy people were on the screen together.
I actually really liked it, pretty good performances and all, okay storyline, but still, a flop ðŸ˜.
I have a few theories of my own:
1) the movie was trying to "happen" too badly. Vegas setting, car chases, hot latina, shootouts (even old western themes.) Well it was trying to be too hollywood in bollywood. We like synchronized dancing,item songs, and all that ish. But here, we got a super modernized movie, but nothing extremely novel in terms of story and all.
2) Language barriers. So barbara's character spoke in spanish (understandably). But why was hrithik's char speaking in english the whole time. I was cool with it, cuz it helped me understand and enjoy everything better, but i can't imagine the frustration of the general indian movie goers. They prob had to stare at subtitles the whole time.
3) the combination of the two reasons above alienated the large masses.
4) sometimes it felt like this movie was being targeted towards NRI's instead of the masses of people at india. But with hollywood as an option, the things seen in kites wasn't exactly too novel.
5) major plot line holes and way of the story coming together esp towards the second half/ quarter. but thats not exactly something we haven't experienced before in bollywood.
6) chumma chummis may have kept the parents and kiddies away? idk, who knows anymore. every movies these days have kisses.
