Known for her simple looks, the actress says it's not a conscious effort but depends on what the role demands. Watch out, as she is ready to rock the silver screen with some glossy makeovers

Welcome To The New Me: Vidya Balan

After six months of non-stop work, Vidya Balan finally took a break last week. The actress flew to Bangkok to visit her sister. It has been a hectic first-quarter of 2007 for Vidya.

"I've been out of the country since January. I was shooting for Sajid Khan's Heyy Babyy! in Australia and for Priyadarshan's Bhool Bhulaiya in Jaipur. Then I've been in Pune for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Halla Bol," says the actress.

Director's choice

Of late, Vidya's minimal makeup is being noticed. "In Guru, I had little make-up because that's how Mani Ratnam likes his artistes to be. Even Aishwarya Rai had very little make-up in the film.

If people liked my simplicity it was because of the director's vision. As for Salaam-e-Ishq, I drew flak for looking worn-out. But I played a girl who had lost her memory. Naturally she'd feel and look tortured. Again in Eklavya the character required minimal make-up."

Feels lucky

The actress continues, "It's all to do with the director and the cameraman. Tomorrow if I play a character who needs to be dolled up I will do that. I'm not deliberately choosing roles that require me to look simple.

I am not being modest when I say this. I feel lucky to be working with all these talented directors who are so different from one another. After Parineeta everyone thought I was only capable of looking one particular way.

With successive films I've been able to prove I can change my looks."
