I came across this excellent audio podcast on the Mahabharat by Lawrence Manzo. All those out there who find the Mahabharat to be a very big novel to read or are not very fond of reading, can listen to it. (It is of course free of cost). IMO it is a pretty objective retelling, biased perhaps only in leaving out some parables which have almost nothing to do with the main narrative. But these are few and far between. The retelling does not romanticize any of the characters but offers a pretty rational view. And it also has commentary by the author to go with the narration that I found pretty insightful. Most importantly, the author of the podcast comes without any baggage about the epic as he is not familiar with it's popular perception in India.
The author refers to the critical edition for most of his podcast and also incorporates some material from the Srimad Bhagwatam to fill his listeners in on Krishna's background.
P.S Since the podcast is by an American, he is quite unemotional about some of the religious elements. Although he does include all the miracles and divine events in his podcast, his language does contain some American colloquialism.
