Part 15 The sunshine and the storm
Raman was the alpha male. Always staking his space, stamping his authority at home and at work always at helm telling people off or using them wisely.
His state in his own bedroom was however very different from his boardroom persona. Little Ruhi ruled the roost here. She had two slaves both of whom loved her to bits. One had the conviction to be with her all the time while the other was confusing with his display of affection sometimes. Ruhi always played football in bed taking turns, kicking at Ishita or Raman. She somehow kicked Raman more he believed. So very often off late he grabbed his daughter close just before he decided to shut his eyes so that her kicks were softer and he always had another wicked reason for that. He would never own up to that even to himself aloud though.
Ruhi was Ishita magnet. So whenever he gathered Ruhi close to him Ishita would follow in her sleep - arms first and torso next. There was nothing but pure affection that he felt in the arms of the 2 girls in his bed. Being an alpha male flew out of his window. He was just Raman Kumar Bhalla a man who felt loved and wanted. Having to sleep on the edge of his own bed was a small price to pay for that.
Last night after his drink he had forgotten to latch his bedroom door. And that was how Toshiji found the threesome in bed. Raman right at the edge of the bed. Ruhi next him with her arms around his neck and Ishita with her arm across her daughter and her husband while the major half of the bed was empty! Toshiji was moved to see her Raman asleep with a small smile on his face. " Jiyo Ishita Jiyo" she thought as she quietly pulled the drapes to let the sleepy family sleep in peace. It was Sunday after all and they deserved all the rest they were getting she thought as she softly closed the door behind.
Toshiji was smiling to herself thinking of what she saw in her son's bedroom...she was happy she peeked in while she was sipping her tea. For once Madrasan felt like an endearment from her mouth. She was immensely happy when she heard that Raman was willing to cast his bitter memories of Holi and go over to the event his company sponsored. He was sure that Adi his son his ex-wife and her lambu boyfriend would be there. He did not want to expose Ishita and Ruhi to Adi's bitterness or to Shagun's nastiness. He was desparate to meet his son. Ruhi was sulking because she was not going with Raman.
Ishita got an invite from Mihika and Ruhi and Ishita decided to land at the holi event and surprise Raman. She was almost sure that Raman might be irritated but would be happy to see Ruhi. They all played holi, Raman even danced with Ishita to make Ruhi happy. Adi was furious he could not accept Ishita's cheer or his father's new found satisfaction. He lashed out at Raman - just as he had mis-behaved with him at his birthday party and Raman's rage was too much for Ishita and little Ruhi.
They stormed back home and cold shouldered Raman. He was just about repenting his mistake in private and making half hearted attempts to placate Ishita with his daughter's encouragement before he fell a prey to Adi's demands again and made Ishita apologise to Adi and his ex-wife. He felt miserable for the situation he found himself in that night - for the pain he had caused Ishita and Ruhi. He sat in the darkness and broke down in his mothers arms. He had to set it right he knew, but could not help but feel sorry for himself. The girls had ganged up and they were both furious with him.
As if that was not enough Simi and her husband had taken Ishita's time and a furious , bitter Raman accused Ishita of being no better than Shagun. Parmeet had come to Ishita's rescue when he explained that he was now jobless and it was Ishita who had supported them.
Ishita lost her patience with all these events. The emotions they shared at the dinner date seemed so far off. It was one step forward and many steps backward for Raman and Ishita. Raman realised that he was hurting his Ruhi and his Ishita and decided to change his demeanour. Ishita was not even talking to him. Neither was Ruhi. He craved for the nights he had gotten so used too. He was officially back in the dog house - the couch.
He was back to work, a week had passed, when he suddenly remembered the happenings at Ishita's clinic the week before their fight. He was unaware of what was happening on the case front - but he did not want his wife exposed to the wolves of the world - Ashok and his petty lawyer. Ishita was a smart brave woman but she was guileless. She could fight but could fight only decently. He knew she would volunteer no information and die before she turned to him for help. But she would be in trouble he knew. His lawyer friend was coming to see him that afternoon to meet him about some commercial contracts Raman had to sign. He wanted an update on Ishita's scenario and be prepared. He decided to call Ishita's receptionist first and then find out where he could get an update from.
Ishita madam was busy said the receptionist. Is she with a patient he asked...there was silence at the other end. " Bahiya Ishita maam ko mat batana ki maine bola, muhje laga ki shaayad app janthe nahi ho, uss dhin jab lafda hua tha aap yahin thay na isiliye.. madam ko aaj subah notice dee gayi hai enquiry katam hone tak wo paitents ko treat nahi kar sakthi hai ...Madam apne room mae bhohot ro rahi thi bahiya" she said.
Raman slammed his pen down and barked instructions to Mihir to look after his office and cancel his meetings for the rest of the day. He reached Ishita as quickly as he could. He spoke to Ishita's partner Sabiha and learnt that Ishita was facing her hospital board as they were talking and the worst outcome was that she could be barred from practicing till the court's verdict would come through. Raman could not contain himself and peeped through the blinds to see what was going on in the board room.
What he saw shattered and angered him. Prateek was leading the charge and all those people making his wife feel small. The leering Prateek angered Raman and he remembered the only brief exchange he had with Prateek at the car park where Ishita ran to hide behind Raman. He was sure Prateek was not helpful. His jhansi ki rani was like his frightened little Ruhi. She grabbed her bag and headed for the lift unaware of Prateek, behind her; who had pulled her into a quite corner. " Ishita I know you and Raman are not really man and wife...my offer is still open for you" he said rubbing his lips. A disgusted Ishita froze with fright. Raman could stop himself any longer, walked in and pushed Prateek away from his wife and pushed her behind him. " Ishita is not alone Prateek, the law is for everyone. Your hospital needs talented doctors she is good enough to go any place and hold her own. Stay away from my wife. I am not the quiet kind you know" he spat out.
" OH REALLY! wife is she really your wife...she more like your daughter's care taker. " he hissed. " Iski bhakwas sunne ki zaroorat nahi hai hame Ishita" he turned and grabbed her hand " chalo yahen se nikalthe hai our Ruhi is waiting for us at home Ishita he said while she sobbed. He cupped her face, wiped her tears away and said " iss stupid admi ko itna importance mat do, saamp hai yeh hum milke maar denge isko" he said as he put his hand on her back and steered her out.
Ishita was absolutely quiet, but her tears did not stop. " Raman muhje malai mandir jaana hai ...gadi roko please" she said. " Haan teek hai chalo mai bhi chalta hoon" he said. " I want to go alone. I don't want Ruhi to see me like this..i want to go to the temple and then I will come home. Gaadi roko please" she said softly. " Ok Ishita tum akele chale jaana mujhe wahin jaana tha. Tum jab ready ho ghar jane ke liye tab call caro main yaheen se tum pick kar loonga , ok? " he asked. Ishita gave in as she was in no mood to fight him off she had a much bigger battle in hand.
She called a good two hours after he had dropped her. Raman was at temple steps waiting for her to call him all the 2 hours that she was away. She looked a picture of balance when he saw her walk down from the temple steps. The gajra in her braid the haldi kumkum on her forehead and the pooja plate that she was carrying with her and the setting sun behind her; drove home something that he had suspected all along but was never ready to admit even to himself. Ishita was in no way similar to Shagun. She was so much like him - simple, loving, very intellegent and awfully dedicated to her profession and family. He was proud of his wife that instant. He had learned something very important from her that day. Even in the depths of her despair she thought of his daughter and instinctively decided to put her worries aside and go to Ruhi as just her mother.
Raman looked at his wife, his looked up at her too today and took her hand with a smile and led her to their car. " Raman Iet me speak to amma and appa first baad mai Ruhi se ake milti hoon" she said while Raman nodded. He understood her need to be with her parents. After all he had not endeared himself to her and she was not going to turn to him in her hour of need. To his surprise he saw her turning into their flat he looked at her with a question in his eyes. She leaned over and whispered in his ears..." "it's already dinner time mai Ruhi ko pehle sula deti hoon phir amma appa ke pass chali jaaoongi." Raman looked at her with new found respect.
Ruhi hugged her mom, got on with her schoolwork finished her dinner, her bed time story with her mom and went to sleep with her dadi tonite. Ishita shut the door behind her and walked across to her parents Raman could not hold for longer that half and hour. He walked out to check on the Iyer household. When he walked in Ishita had her head on her fathers shoulder while Mihika and amma were trying to come to grips with it all. Appa was happy to see Raman walk in. " Ayyo Raman yeh kya ho gaya... mere Ishu ko..aage kya hoga" Amma asked with tears. " It's only a job amma, hum sab jaante hai apki Ishu kitni acchi doctor hai" he said. " Par beta kitna bad nami hoga" said Appa while there was fresh flood of tears streaming from Ishita's eyes. " Appa please himmat rakiye saab kuch theek ho jayega." he said. " Nahi Nahi Raman muhje bhohot darr lag raha hai...kya hoga meri Ishu ko" Raman sat next to amma put his arm around her shoulders and assured her looking at Ishitha " kuch nahi hoga humari Ishu ko" he said again. Mihika walked up to Amma and Raman and hugged him from the other side. Raman was surprised - Jhansi ki Rani junior was hugging him forgetting Mihir - he thought to himself but he only had eyes for his teary wife who had walked into her room to change and freshen up. Raman did not want to leave Ishita behind at the Iyers that night but it seemed to be heading that way. He hovered around for awhile waiting for her to come out changed. Appa seemed to read his thoughts. He looked at Ishita and told her " Ishu bas beta apne ghar jaake so jao, lets all sleep over this. I'm sure we will find a way." Ishita reluctantly walked back; while Raman could not help but feel insanely jubilant to have his wife walk back to his house.
She seemed to have settled in the couch and was already asleep when Raman came to check on her. He was still going over the events of the past week in his mind, ;ying on his bed, when he felt something next to his knees. Ishita was sitting next to him on his bed chewing her nails. When she saw Raman stirring in the dark she asked him with large tear filled eyes " sab theek ho jayega na?? ". Raman pulled himself up and leaned on the back of his bed " bilkul" he sounded sure. " Saachi" she asked him. He put his hand out and said "come here" she quietly moved to him and rested on her cheek on his shoulder like he had invited her to..." tumhe kuch nahi hoga yaar...law is for everyone." he said wiping her tears away. It pointless wiping her tears she continued to cry into his Tshirt and Raman simply let her do it." " Kal ka kal dehk lete hai ab thum so jao" he said. " Hummm" she said as she snuggled closer into his neck and draped her arm around his torso. He did not have the heart to ask her to move to her side of the bed. He liked where she was and he hoped she would like it too!
The board room Alpha male Raman was back in his bedroom with his wife tucked into him. "No one would get to his family this time, come what may" he decided as he watched Ishu drift into her sleep. He gathered her closer and slinked down the head board with her next to him. May be just may be he could fall in love with the delicate human being next to him. But protect her he will " Sirf Ruhi ke liye." he thought as fingers was smoothing her hair on their own volition.
