The first day that Romit Raj went on the sets of film Yatra where he's playing Nana Patekar's son, he was pleasantly surprised when the seasoned actor hugged and wished him luck. "I went up to him to introduce myself and he hugged me and said 'You've got a great oppurtunity with his film. Now give each scene your best shot'. Even the next day, he sent his man to ask me if I've had my breakfast. He was like this all throughout the shooting of the film," recounts Romit.
The actor, who's currently playing Yuvraj in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, is grateful to the director Gautam Ghosh for the role. "He wasn't very sure if I would look like Nana's son but I said I'm willing to try out anything, even get tanned for the right look. But he just wanted me to learn to play drums since I play a drummer in the film who has his own band," he says. Although he's doing a cameo in the film, Romit isn't concerned about that. "I just wanted to be a part of this film which has such senior actors like Nana, Rekha and Deepti Naval and directed by a person who's won 13 national awards," he says.
About Rekha, Romit has an interesting anecdote to tell. "I didn't have any scenes with her but when she came on the sets, she looked at me and asked somebody, 'who's this little baby?'" he laughs. And although he's doing this film and has another project in hand, Romit says he's happy doing television too. "My track on Ghar.... is doing very well. I just want to keep doing good work. If God wants me to do TV, I'll do TV. If he wants me to do films, I'll do films," he says. Romit adds that he's working towards fulfilling his mother's wish. "She tells me 'There's a Shehanshah in this industry, there's a Badshah in this industry, now you have to become the Yuvraj of this industry!" Tall order that!
