After 'Kucch To Hai', Ekta Kapoor now presents 'Koi Aap Sa'. The similarity in both the movies is that each of them revolved around campus life. While KTH belonged to romance'n'thriller genre, KAS is romance'n'drama starring Aftab Shivdasani, Natassha [Kucch To Hai, Yeh Dil, Krishna Cottage] and Dipannita Sharma [16 December, Asambhav, My Brother Nikhil]. Produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor, KAS is directed by first timer Partho Mitra and brings across the point that "Friends may not be lovers, But lovers have to be friends". With the consistent duo of Himesh Reshammiya and Sameer at the helm, one is sure that the album would comprise of some 'Kool' melodious songs.
The opening track 'Seene Mein Dil' is of the kind that has made Himesh Reshammiya successful over the years. Soothing, pleasant and extremely likeable, it is an ear-friendly love song by ever so efficient pairing of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. Based entirely on melody, it may not be a unique tune per se but that's understandable due to the genre it belongs to. In that aspect, it works quite well with one enjoying the track any number of times it is played. Taking cue from this fact, the album contains a solo version of this song by Alka Yagnik as well.
Instead of an original, a remix version of 'Aadat Ho Chuki Hai' comes next in the album. The theme is the same as 'Chaska' from 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' i.e. 'am addicted to you'. The song is surprisingly quite disappointing in spite of the husky rendition of Sunidhi Chauhan that she reserves for Ekta Kapoor movies. Shaan appears quite wayward while the key lyrics come quite close to in 'Aafreen' by Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. A forgettable track [remixed by DJ Akbar Sami], one is not quite hopeful of the original as well that comes later in the album.
Pyaar-Mohabbat returns with a bang in the form of 'Tere Dil Ka Rishta', a solo by Sonu Nigam that gets the album back in the groove. A track about a guy wiping tears off his best friend, it has some touching lyrics by Sameer that should sound quite well in the narrative of the movie. A song about hope and affection, it never drags and instead peps up the mood. The feel of the song is again typically Himesh Reshammiya i.e. melodious and sugar-candy. A sweet number with an effective chorus, it is sure to bring on a smile.
Just like 'Aadat', a remix of 'Bandh Mere Pairon Mein' arrives before its original. Choodi, kangan, jhumka, jhoomar, payalia, Reshammiya, Sameer – and you have all the ingredients ready for a tried and tested recipe. The trouble in the case of 'Bandh Mere Pairon Mein' is its all so predictable that there is a strong feeling of dj vu, what with the tune being so similar to Reshammiya's own 'Saawariya Re O Saawariya' from 'Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye'. Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan are all excited and spirited with Jayesh providing "outside support", but overall the track somehow fails to click as it doesn't have the ONE important factor going in its favor - "listener going for that 'repeat' button"!
The album seems to be going in a see-saw mode with songs alternating between melodious and dance track. Hence it is the turn of a melodious track to come up next which incidentally is the title song 'Koi Aap Sa'. A Sonu Nigam-Alka Yagnik song, it is good to hear but lacks the effect that one expected from the title song of a romantic movie. Sounding oh-so-similar to 'Ik Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai [Shor], it is a decent number though and a fine listening but that's about it. Nothing everlasting about it!
Some good melodious music makes 'Kabhi Na Sukoon Aaya' a pleasant sounding number. Both Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik enjoy while rendering this track belonging to 'dil-vil-pyaar-vyaar' genre. Stamp of 'Reshammiya-Sameer' jodi is apparent all over on this sweet'n'saccharine song that doesn't have in it to wroom to the top of the charts but instead is of the kind that works well as a part of the package. Udit-Alka return after a short break to get all sad for a second version of the song.
In the end, KAS turns out to be an average album with 3-4 tunes that sound good. But then even these are not of a kind that makes for a chartbuster album, though they are quite decent. For an album with music buy Himesh Reshammiya who is presently rocking the scene with multiple hits under his belt [most recently being Aashiq Banaya Aapne], one expected much more from KAS.
