MuggleNet reader Catie, a resident of Mississippi, has written in to tell us how reading the Harry Potter books has helped her cope with devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina. She also sent in this excerpt from a local newspaper:
"School shelters in Gulfport, MS, aren't exactly full of sadness -- well, for the kids at least. Second hand Harry Potter books were donated to the kids in local shelters. Throughout the shelters, you can find kids, teenagers, and adults alike, pouring over the books. 'Throughout this whole ordeal, there's not that much to do but eat, sleep, and worry about your home that's not there anymore,' says the mother of a little girl named Katrina. 'She's so happy just reading a book... On the other hand, she now tells me that because of the storm, she'd rather be named Hermione!' And, of course, I guess we all need a little magic in our lives right now."
