In recent times, TV actors and actresses have started to command a fan following like never before - the stories of daily soaps are watched, commented upon, analysed, sighed over; each episode breathlessly anticipated and looked forward to. A very popular young actress these days is Sanaya Irani - she of the vulnerable eyes, the innocent face and the winning smile is one of the hottest young stars of the TV firmament.
Born to a Zoroastrian family in Mumbai, Sanaya did a 7 year stint in boarding school at Ooty before college in Sydenham in Mumbai. When she decided to turn to modeling, it was Boman Irani then a photographer, who did her first portfolio. In 2006 she did a supporting role in the Kajol and Aamir Khan starrer film Fanaa. She began her career in show biz by doing music videos such as Jagjit Singh's Tumko Dekha and TV adverts for brands such as Lee, Belmonte, Dabur Honey, Lux and Pepsi.
She played Cadet Sameera Shroff in the SAB TV show Left Right Left. The show dealt specifically with the trials and tribulations of cadets at a military training academy and more generally with the issues that Indian youth face today, including feelings of patriotism. Season 1 of the show was among the most popular youth based serials on Indian TV; particularly the title track.
Sanaya played the role of one of the three daughters of Radhaa in the serial Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi - moving from Meeriut to Mumbai proved not as easy as they thought it would be.
The serial Miley Jab Hum Tum was to prove pivotal for Sanaya for several reasons. The youth based serial about relationships in college went on to become a hit and ran for two seasons. The pairing of Sanaya's character Gunjan Bhushan with that of Smarat Shergil played by co-star Mohit Sehgal was not only popular enough that fan clubs devoted to them sprouted; it was also the start of a personal relationship between the two actors; a relationship that continues till date. The pairing also won the Galaxy TV Award for the favourite off-screen Jodi.
Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? was the next serial that Sanaya Irani was seen in. the story is that of Arnav and Khushi two seemingly disparate individuals who find that they do have much in common after all and who find themselves falling for each other in spite of not wanting to do so.
She then played Chhanchhan Sarabhai-Borisagar in the serial named after her character, Chhanchhan. This is the story of a modern young woman, who tries to resist falling for Manav, the son of her worst foe; but finds that they fall for each other anyway. The story about love and a conniving mother-in-law to be found favour with audiences and critics alike.
Currently, Sanaya stars in the popular TV show Rang Rasiya which airs on Colors TV. Her character Parvati and her pairing opposite Ashish Sharma as Rudra have become very popular; another highly successful on-screen pairing for Sanaya. The show has become so popular that this has become the most watched show on the channel.
Sanaya's on screen chemistry with her co-stars has won her many awards from the TV fraternity over the years.
Her immense popularity for her shows has meant that Sanaya Irani has been involved with reality TV as well - she has been a participant on Kaho Na Yaar Hai andMeethi Choori No 1, she has been a host forZara Nachke Dikha (season 2) on Star Plus and for Ishq wala Love on Zee TV along with Karan Grover. In addition she has appeared as a guest in other reality TV shows such as Bigg Boss 7, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (seaon 6), Star Parivaar Ka Tyohar, and other shows.
In her personal life, she has had a long term relationship with co-star Mohit Sehgal; which according to her is a case of opposites attracting. However there are no plans to get married as yet, since according to Sanaya, "Just the mere thought of staying away from my parents scares me". She is also known to be a close friend of TV starDhrashti Dhami.
As someone from the Zoroastrian community, Hindi was never Sanaya's first language and she has, by her own admission, struggled to sound comfortable while doing her dialogues. It may have been particularly difficult for the actor doing roles such as that of Paro in Rang Rasiya, where she plays a girl from a border village.
