Pariyon ki Kahaani
Wild jasmines lay scattered across the damp floor, leading her to the water's edge. They looked good to her, like little rain droplets lying frozen on lily petals. Her bare feet made a delightful squelching sound as she walked across the mud. She kicked a flower with her toes and watched as it floated through the air, landing in the water with a quiet splash.
It was a beautiful morning.
She dipped her foot into the river, shutting her eyes as familiar and not entirely unpleasant chills travelled up her spine. Goosebumps rose on her skin and she drew the hot cup of coffee closer to her lips, the rising steam curling her damp hair.
The past week had passed not unlike an avalanche - impossible to describe and yet the sure signs of its existence marked her at her core.
Somewhere, a week ago, she must have fallen into the realm of dreams, an impossible world that had only ever been real in the fairy tales from her childhood. A world where magic was real. How else could she explain it - the freedom that she was feeling?
The freedom to let her imagination run away with her without spending the night perfecting every last touch. The freedom to grab Maan's arm in excitement and run around the site shouting her ideas without weighing out the (in)appropriateness of doing so. The freedom to work alongside him in silence and for once, not have their personal failures loom over them.
Everything felt new again.
She couldn't pinpoint exactly what was making her feel this way. In truth, not much had changed. Work had begun on the regeneration of the historic theatre. She was in charge of the design while he oversaw construction. They were, in their own little way, equals.
That old restlessness in her heart had subsided but she knew it had not been silenced just yet. She knew it would awake again and she thought she might even be ready for it. But for now, it felt nice to just be.
For now, Maan was not her husband nor her friend or confidante.
He was just Maan, she was just Geet and she was leaving the rest of the story to write itself.
