I know yaar and I don't mean to make you guys wait. The chapter was just not coming right. I have written it and rewritten it.😕I am still not completely happy with it, but will post it..thodi hi der mein.😛
I have not proof read, so please ignore any mistakes. Will go over it again tomorrow.
Also, I am not too happy with how this chapter has turned out, though I myself can't pin point the exact reason. I wrote and rewrote it many times. It is what I would call a transition chapter. I hope you guys like it.
CHAPTER 20
He had come home, after an exhausting day, seen her laughing with Dev and Dadi, remembered Parinda Godbole's teary eyes and on a crazy impulse he'd told her about Pari's condition in a stark manner. He'd wanted to get an honest reaction from her; he'd gotten that and a lot more, than he'd bargained for. She had fallen apart right in front of his eyes. He had never deliberately tried to hurt any woman and the fact that her leg had been hurt due to his stupidity made him mad at himself. Whatever else she may be, her devotion to her daughter had been true and clearly blazing out of her, the moment she'd stepped on that glass to get to her daughter, uncaring about her own safety. He wondered who and where Miri's father was and why he'd abandoned this woman and their child. He had also seen her unrelenting loyalty and concern for a friend. And the last, but certainly not the least was the fact that she'd been able to reach out to Dev, when he and Dadi had felt completely helpless. Who was the real woman? He had never allowed himself to think about her, because from the moment he'd met her, she'd shaken him up completely. Had he let the fact that she made him lose control, color his judgment about her? He was going to get down to the bottom of the mystery that was Geet Handa, he promised himself.
Now as he was driving towards the Handa household, he was glad for the cover of the darkness as his eyes were drawn time and again to the rear view mirror and to her. She though, was gazing out the side window fixedly and although he should've been glad, it made him strangely mad at her. Miri was fast asleep with her head resting on Geet's lap.
Suddenly she yelled out.
"Be careful. You'll hit the car in front."
He hit the brakes and the car barely stopped from bumping into the vehicle in front that had stopped at a red light.
Their eyes met in the rear view mirror this time.
"Aap thik hai?" He clearly heard the concern in her voice.
He kept on looking at her without saying a word. There was a honk from the car behind and he saw that the light had turned green. He finally nodded at her and stepped on the accelerator.
She was back to gazing out of the side window, but he was satisfied. She was not unaware as she was pretending to be, was she?
They were soon at the Handa household and he brought the car to a halt.
He got out of the car, opened the back door and looked down at Miri.
"I'll take her inside first, and then come back for you."
She nodded slowly, as her heart beat started it's drumroll all over again and the muscles in her stomach clenched hard.
Geet stop this nonsense, right now. She warned herself.
Just then there was a voice from behind.
"Ji main aapki kuch madat kar sakta hoon?"
(Can I help you?)
Maan turned around to see a middle aged man with salt and pepper hair and rounded glass frames, standing there.
Just then he heard Geet's voice call out.
"Baba."
"Geet? Bete tum? Aur yeh kaun hain? Sab thik hain na?"
(Geet? Is that you? And who is this? Is everything ok?)
"Haan Baba everything is fine. Aur yeh Maan Singh Khurana hain."
"Oh toh aap Savitri devi ke bade pote hain? Main Geet aur Brij ka pita hoon. Badi khushi hui aapse milke. Par aap yaha?"
(Oh so you are Savitri Devi's older grandson? I am Geet and Brij's father. I am very glad to meet you. But how come you're here. )
"Woh Baba mere pair mein thodi chot lag gayi thi toh yeh mujhe chodne aa gaye."
(Baba I was slightly injured, so he came to drop me.)
"Geet!!" Mohinder Handa exclaimed while rushing towards the car.
"Baba main bilku thik hoon. I promise. Bas pair pe chal nahi pa rahi hoon."
(Baba, I'm perfectly fine. I promise. Just unable to walk on this leg)
"Kaunsa pair, aur kya hua?" Mohinder asked worriedly.
(Which leg and what happened?)
She drew both her legs out of the car and pointed to her bandaged foot.
Mohinder let out a brief sigh of relief, while simultaneously shaking his head.
She just gave him the barest of details about her injuries. She was relieved to find her father there, but also felt a twinge of disappointment. She did not let herself dwell on the disappointment for too long and lifted her arms towards her father.
"Ek baar phirse Baba."
(Once again Baba)
"Nahi karni hain yeh duty mujhe phir se Geet"
(I don't want to perform this duty again, Geet)
Maan's eyes narrowed at their conversation.
Again the same words, "Phir se" he realized.
Geet suddenly looked up and saw Maan's narrowed eyes fixed on her. She hastily changed the subject.
"Baba, Brij bhaiyya, Pari ko leke aa gaye kya?"
(Baba is Brij back with Pari?)
"Nahi maloom mujhe. Chalo andar chalke dekhte hain. I hope everything is fine with her."
(I don't know. Let's go inside and see. . I hope everything is fine with her.)
"Sub Inspector Godobole was perfectly fine when I saw her earlier today, Mr. Handa."
Geet's father turned around to look at Maan.
"Aap jante hain Pari ko? "
(Do you know Pari?)
"Ji...umm.. aaj hi mulaqat hui meri unse."
(I met her just today)
And what a meeting it had been, he thought to himself.
Mohinder Handa grinned looking at him.
"Aapke chehre se lagta hai humari Pari ne bada accha impression jamaya hain aap pe."
(From your face, it looks like our Pari has impressed you a lot.)
"Ji aisa hi kuch bol sakte hain aap." Maan grinned back at him.
(Yes, you can say that)
"Thanks for bringing Miri and Geet home. Aap andar aa jayiye."
"Ji. Main Miri ko leke aa jaunga."
(I'll come inside with Miri)
As Mohinder lifted Geet in his arms, Maan felt a vague sense of irritation. He shook his head briskly and lifted the other occupant of the car in his arms. He looked down at her and smiled briefly. The pixie was fast asleep. At least somebody wanted to be in his arms. He cuddled her slight, warm body a little closer to his chest as they all started walking inside.
Just as her father was about to enter the main door, he stopped abruptly, while looking inside and started laughing.
"Kya hua Baba?"
(What happened Baba?)
"Woh dekho tumahri hone wali bhabhi aur tumhare bhai ko. Pata nahi in do hanso ka joda kab banega."
(Look at your future sister-in-law and your brother. God knows when these two swans are going to be paired.)
Parinda Godbole was happily perched in Brij Handa's arms and was looking up at him with a dreamy smile. Every time Brij tried to put her down, she gave an exaggerated yelp and clung all the harder to him, while mumbling something.
"Pari mujhe dekhne toh do pair mein kaha pe chot lagi hain."
(Pari at least me see where your leg is hurt.)
Brij Handa looked at the girl in his arms with a mix of emotions he couldn't quiet put a finger on. He was mad at her for putting herself in danger, he was angrier still, at the man who'd dared mar her beautiful face. He was worried and he was confused. She'd taken one look at him when he'd gone to pick her up, burst into tears and literally jumped into his arms. When he had tried questioning her about the events, all she'd said was,
"Mujhe ghar jana hain. Mujhe ghar leke chaliye Brij."
(I want to go home. Take me home Brij.)
She had suddenly started limping around and so he'd picked her up and brought her home. From that moment she'd been mumbling the same thing over and over again. She was still saying it in response to his every question.
He'd asked,
"Pari are you hurt anywhere other than your face and your leg?
She'd given him the strangest reply. All she'd said was,
"Iodine, Lutetium Valedium, Uranium."
Each question he'd asked after that, he'd gotten the same reply.
He did not know why she was recounting the names of the elements ofthe periodic table, but every time she said it her voice ached and he got goosebumps all over.
How weird.
Now, as Mohinder Handa was about to enter the house, Geet held him back.
"Baba ruk jayie. Thoda waqt dijiye na un dono ko. Shayad Brij bhaiyya aaj himmat juta paye. Par pata nahi yeh Pari kya bad- bada rahi hain. Yeh Iodine kya...kya bol rahi hai?
(Baba please wait. Give those two a moment. Perhaps Brij bhaiyya can gather up his courage today. But what is Pari mumbling. She is something about Iodine)
"Par bete, Mr. Khurana mehmaan hai humare, aise unhe bahar toh bitha nahi sakte na?"
(But bete, Mr. Khurana is ou guest, we can't have him sitting outside now can we)
"Do you mind Mr. Khurana? Please can we just wait outside for a few minutes? This is very-very important for us." She pleaded.
Mohinder laughed and turned towards Maan and asked him,
"Agar aap ko koyi aitraz na ho, toh hum yaahi baramde mein ruke thodi der?
(If you don't mind can we wait in the verandah for a few minutes?)
He nodded his head towards Pari and Brij.
"Bohot lambi kahani hain un dono ki, aur meri aur Geet ki asha shayad aaj puri ho jaye."
(It's a long story where those two are concerned. I am hoping mine and Geet's wish will be fulfilled today.)
Maan nodded vaguely at Geet and Mohinder Handa's request. All his attention was focused on the scene being played out in the Handa's living room. The foul mouthed, prickly like a hedgehog, Sub Inspector, Parinda Godbole was looking at his employee, Brij Handa with gooey eyes, while pretending her healthy legs were injured and was confessing her love to him over and over again. He should know very well. He'd gotten a bunch of the same confessions from girls in his college after their professor's coffee class. He had found it damn irritating at that time, but right now he was fascinated. It was just this afternoon, he'd told her about the Coffee formula their professor had formed with the elements of the periodic table(Co+2FE=Coffee) and looked like Godbole had gone home and immediately done research for a love confession via the periodic table.
He settled down in a chair, in the verandah, along with the Handa entourage. Mohinder Handa took Miri from his arms and he handed her over reluctantly.
Suddenly his gaze was drawn towards Geet. She was sitting in a chair beside her father, peeking through the window, like a small girl waiting desperately for some kind of long awaited gift. She hardly looked the mother of a five year old with that eager child-like expression on her face. He looked at her innocent expression and self-doubt crept in his mind all over again. He thought back to the scene he'd just witnessed and the wheels of his thought process started working furiously.
He needed answers where Geet Handa was concerned. Nobody was willing to share the information with him openly. If that was the case, he was more than willing to twist a few arms to get what he wanted and he knew who he was going to start with ...Parinda Godbole. The fact that she was wording her love confession so cryptically only meant that she did not want to confess to Brij. Whatever her reasons were, he was going to put the information to best use.
Just then his cell phone rang loudly and Geet jumped high in her chair and squeaked loudly. Brij and Pari looked up with startled expressions as if awakening from their trance and Miri Handa woke up in her grandfather's arms.
Pari jumped down from Brij's arms and rushed out on her perfectly fine two legs, while Brij looked on in dazed confusion. She looked at the four people sitting on the verendah and blushed furiously. Her gaze met Maan Singh Khurana's and he smirked at her. Her eyes widened in horror; she knew that he'd heard her chemical confession and completely understood the meaning of it. Maan looked away from her and this time his eyes met with the most desperately disappointed expression in Geet's eyes. She looked at his cell phone and shook her head at it almost in despair. He had the strangest urge to smash the damn thing to the floor for ringing and bringing that expression on her face and was startled at the violence of his thoughts at an inanimate object.
Man get a grip on yourself. He mentally scolded himself.
Suddenly Pari's gaze feel on Geet's bandaged foot and she gave out a small shriek.
"Geet. What happened."
Then she glared at Maan, eyes flashing.
"Zaroor yeh bhi aap hi ki galti hogi ."
(This must be your fault too.)
Brij who had stepped outside just then, Mohinder Handa and Geet, all gasped out her name simultaneously, but it was little Miri Handa who took charge of the situation. She ran up to Maan and leaned against him.
"Nooo. Nahi Pari masi. Sheru ki koi galti nahi hain.Mamma ka pair glass pe lag ke cut gaya, aur Dadi ne uspe bandage lagaya. Aur phir Sheru ne mamma ko Princess ke jaise uthaya, aur apne arms mein carry kiya aur phir gaadi mein bithaya. Aur Sheru ne mujhe yeh bhi promise kiya ki woh next time mujhe utha ke le jayega. Hai na Sheru?
(Noo. No Pari Masi, it's not Sheru's fault. Maam cut her leg on a glass and then Dadi put a bandage on it and then Sheru lifted her in his arms, just like a princess and carried her to the car. And Sheru has promised me that next time he's going to carry me. Right Sheru?)
Three pairs of adult eyes suddenly moved rapidly between Maan and Geet with startled expressions.
