Chapter 38A
Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh
Kahan Shuru Kahan Khatam
Yeh Manzile Hai Kaunsi
Na Voh Samajh Sake Na Hum
Khushi listened to the song as she leaned her head on one side of the auto she had hired to take her to the hospital. Initially she wanted to take the bike, but then decided against exerting herself. Arnav had sent her a text last night with details of the doctor and the appointment which had been scheduled for a little later in the day. He requested to see her and speak to her before the appointment and even offered to pick her and drive her to the hospital. But Khushi had declined and asked him to meet her only at the hospital. She reiterated that there was nothing left for them to discuss.
She could have consulted her personal gynaecologist but she didn't want to leave any trails given how this could be very damaging to her and her family. She had done enough to upset her parents, already.
She went through a turbulence of emotions the previous day, experiencing everything from helplessness, frustration, pain, hurt, guilt and most importantly a sense of being let down by the man who claimed to love her, by the man who declared he would stand by her through thick and thin. She still loved Arnav and she knew she would always do, but it felt like she was losing herself in the process. She couldn't always be the person who would end up constantly on the losing side while the other person walked away with everything intact. Over the course of the last two days Khushi had crossed that threshold. It had become obvious that Arnav was very self centred where his ambitions, dreams and principles were concerned to the point of even allowing her to face the wrath of her parents. All he had to do yesterday was tell her parents that he would consider the option of marriage, that he would sleep over it. Yet he once again did what He felt was best, what he felt was the right thing to do, her pleads and request notwithstanding. Her mother had once told her that more than love it was respect which was important for the well-being of a relationship. While they had lots of the former, the later had become a one-way street.
Yet she didn't want to accuse Arnav completely for the mess she found her life in, when she had herself walked with her eyes open into this relationship. She had begged him to give them a chance, at a point of time when she was overcome by emotions of his near-death experience. Gripped by the fear of losing him forever, she put her own life and dreams on the line.
Khushi then touched her belly saying a silent apology to the baby growing inside her for becoming a casualty in the complicated world of adult relationships. She found herself out of depth to handle this pregnancy and its implications on her own. She needed one of Arnav or her family to support her through the process. She couldn't approach her parents for help especially after the events of the past day. The very thought of her parents finding out about the pregnancy, sent a shiver down her spine. And Arnav had made it abundantly clear that he will have nothing to do with the pregnancy.
So sadly Khushi had to make the decision to abort the pregnancy and for that she will always hold Arnav responsible. Her complete implicit faith and love for him was slowly being replaced by bitterness.
"""""""""""""""-
The electronic screen displayed the number nine. Khushi looked at the small card in her hand. She looked at the entrance to the gynaecology wing one last time still waiting for Arnav to show up.
He doesn't even have the guts to own up to his mistake and show up here.' She thought to herself and then reassured her that her decision to leave him was turning up to be the right one, given his changed behaviour in the last couple of days.
Khushi then she calmly got up from her seat and walked towards Dr. Manisha Roy's room, her steps assured and her look falsely defiant.
Khushi entered the room after knocking on the door a couple of times. Dr. Roy was a woman in her mid forties. She wore a neatly starched Bengal cotton saree. On her nose rested a pair of glasses with black frame, that gave her an old school look. She didn't spare the woman in front of much of a glance and asked her to sit down.
She opened a new patient file on her computer. The hospital had implemented a new patient data recording system after a few important patient files went missing last year.. The CEO Avinav Reddy spent nearly 1.5 crores on a new software system. When asked by the board as to why such a big investment was required, he replied 'Instead of keeping the hospital open to any potential lawsuit in the future rising out of any missing patient files, thereby losing crores of Rupees over years, it makes sense to invest in an expensive but efficient software system.' Dr. Roy was impressed with the young man's farsightedness.
Dr Roy finally spared a look at the pale and tired looking girl and immediately turned back to her screen. She was already running late for her next appointment, pleasantries be damned. She had to wind up all her appointments before the weekend, before she could take her much awaited holiday with her family.
She began filling in the details of the patient sitting in front of her and decided to find more about her while doing so.
'What's your name,' Dr. Roy asked.
'Kushi Gupta,'.
'Kushi, I'm going to as you a few details before I find out more about your appointment. I need to file these details. Is that okay?' Kushi nodded.
'Age?'
'24 years and 2 months old,' Kushi remarked after making a mental calculation
'Title?'
Kushi hesitated a little before replying 'Miss'
'Address?'
'No 24, Vasant Kunj Apts, Aurangazeb's Road, Delhi- 11', Kushi decided to put Arnav's address down instead of hers.
After filling in other mundane details, she finally turned her chair towards the girl in front of her and brought her glasses back so that they would rest on her eyes. 'So Kushi, how can I help you today,' Dr. Roy asked.
Kushi started nervously fiddling with the hem of her kurti. Dr Roy could see that Kushi was shivering a little. At that very moment, she knew why Kushi had come to consult her. In the twenty odd years of her professional experience she knew what it meant when young girls displayed the obvious signs of fear and nervousness. And unknowingly Dr Roy's heart reached out to the young girl who had been cornered into making a decision that would change her life forever.
Kushi finally decided this had to be said, she had to get this out of the way. She could no longer delay the inevitable.
She took a deep breath and said 'I need an abortion.'
Dr. Roy tried to not show any emotion. Over the years she had learned to withhold and not react to anything her patients had to say.
How many weeks are you Khushi?'
The test said I was about 6 weeks.' Khushi stammered overcome with emotion.
How many tests have you carried out so far?'
Many, each of them confirmed the pregnancy.'
Why do you want to abort the pregnancy Khushi?'
The nerves that Khushi had a tough time managing returned with full force. She bent her head and cried.
Dr. Roy offered her a napkin. I'm sorry, I understand this is a tough time for you. Isn't there anyone else who can assist you?'
Just then she heard someone knock on the door.
""""""
Arnav walked into the room after knocking the door twice. Of all days, his car broke down on the way to the hospital. He had to wait for the breakdown service to arrive and then take a cab to the hospital making him late for the appointment. He cursed himself for not being there on time at the hospital for Khushi. And when he saw her looking emotionally fragile and vulnerable as he entered the room, he felt even more apologetic.
You are...?' Dr Roy asked.
Khushi wiped her eyes and looked up to Arnav who looked at her with tenderness.
He is the father...'
I'm Khushi's partner.' Both Arnav and Khushi spoke up at the same time, each of them giving conflicting answers of what their relationship was.
Dr. Roy had a fair idea of the issue between the couple and she was furious that this couple had decided to take the easy route and abort the pregnancy. Once Arnav sat down she repeated the question. Why the abortion?
I'm not married doctor. This wasn't planned. And we have both decided that this is for the best as we don't want the baby to bind us together.' Khushi said with a dead-pan expression. Arnav's arrival had strengthened her resolve and she decided not to expose her emotional side to him anymore.
Each of Khushi's words although true were difficult for Arnav to digest as he knew the utter feeling of helpless Khushi must have experienced while saying those words.
Arnav tried to say something, but Khushi cut him off. Arnav, Let me handle this.'
Dr. Roy, switched off her monitor and stretched her knuckles to de-stress. She looked at the young couple in front of her and decided to drill some sense into them.
Do you both think I have become a leading gynaecologist today by handing out abortions like it were some free coupons? If thats the reason you decided to consult with me, let me warn you that you have come to the wrong place.' Arnav and Khushi were taken aback by Dr Roy's words.
Abortion is not a joke, nor is pregnancy. I don't know what problems you both have, but ask yourself if any of those problems are bigger than a child that you both have created out of love at some point of time in the past.'
Khushi looked on as every words of Dr Roy pierced through her heart.
Do you want to get rid of a child growing inside you Khushi? And do you want to let her or force her to get rid off your child Arnav?'
The words softened Arnav's resolve.
Do either of you know how an abortion is carried out? Do you know how traumatic it can be to the mother and in some cases even the father?'
Dr. Roy then proceeded to give a graphic description of how pregnancies are terminated. It was something she always did to scare people off undergoing an abortion for insignificant reasons. And most times it worked.
Arnav felt uncomfortable as he heard the doctor explain how the pregnancy is terminated in detail. He wanted to close his ears if that was possible. He shuddered to even imagine Khushi having to undergo any of that. No he would allow her or force her to do that to herself.
Dr Roy stood up and stood near her chair. An Abortion can have lasting side effects on one's physical and importantly mental health. Although it hasn't been proven medically but many women undergo fertility issues and other health problems on the back of an abortion. Do you want to put your body through all of those risks Khushi?'
Khushi didn't have an answer as she absorbed the sheer intensity of information and advice shared with her. She had never imagined that an abortion could be this serious with long lasting repercussions. At that moment she wished that she had someone as old and as knowledgeable as Dr Roy to turn to for advise. She wished her mother was there to support her.
So many women come back and tell me that I was right about advising them against an abortion. And they also tell me that they would have been happier if they had kept the baby, as the guilt is too overpowering.' Dr Roy's tone softened as she spoke.
If Khushi was too young, or if Arnav you were unemployed or not settled, or if there were other grave issues like abuse, existing health issues, danger to Khushi or your life due to the pregnancy, then abortion seems reasonable. But getting an abortion because both of you cannot agree or commit to a future, to raise a baby together, is something can be resolved and should be avoided at all costs.'
But I'm only a doctor. I can only offer you advise. I cant make a decision on your behalf. If you still want to go ahead with it, I will help you out. The decision is yours to make.'
Khushi and Arnav didn't know what to say, they were both tongue-tied.
Looking their confused expressions, Dr Roy spoke, I want you both to think about everything I have said so far. Khushi has to deposit her blood at the lab for some tests. I will arrange for a scan in a couple of hours. The test results should also be back before the scan. I hope you will use the time to make an informed decision together. Good luck!'
Khushi walked out of the room after thanking Dr Roy. Arnav went up to her and thanked her too, It was me doctor. It was I who forced her to get rid off the baby.' His guilt was overtly evident in his voice and expressions.
I thought as much.' She replied.
Don't Arnav. Nothing is more important than a life. At six weeks most babies will have a heartbeat. Do you want to kill your baby's heartbeat?'
Arnav eyes became wet with tears, he was too overcome with emotion to reply. He took a moment to compose himself and announced with conviction No I wont do that, if Khushi still wants the baby. I may not still feel emotionally connected to the baby, but I know that Khushi does. Given a choice, this isn't the life I would opt for. But then I would rather opt for this over pushing Khushi and the baby into hell with my own two hands. I'm sorry doctor.'
I'm not the one you should apologise to. Speak to you girlfriend.' And then she smiled and added, I hope you will come back in two hours to see the baby's heartbeat during the scan and not for any other purpose.'
Arnav hugged Dr Roy for making him see sense and for stopping him from forcing Khushi to make a decision that would change her life for the worst. He picked up the prescription for the blood test and ran out of the room to find Khushi.
