
The legends and mythologies associated to Holi are interesting and colorful as the festival itself.
An egoistic demon king named Hiranyakashyap had won over the kingdom of Earth, and commanded everybody in his kingdom to worship only him. However, his son refused to do so and continued to worship Lord Vishnu with complete devotion.
This made Hiranyakashipu very angry and he made various attempts to kill Prahlad. During a particular attempt, he ordered ordered his sister Holika to kill Prahlad and she, possessing the power to walk through fire unharmed, picked up the child and walked into a fire with him. Prahlad, however, chanted the names of God and was saved from the fire. Holika perished because she did not know that her powers were only effective if she entered the fire alone.
After the sudden demise of Sati, Lord Shiva was furious and saddened and went into meditation renouncing his duties. The world's balance soon crumbled on his absence. This made all the Gods concerned, making them seek the help of Kaamadeva, the god of love and passion to bring Shiva back to his original self. Despite knowing about the consequences, he shot his arrow on Shiva. This made Shiva extremely angry and he opened his third eyes, incinerating Kaamadeva. However, Kaamadeva's arrow had the desired effect and Lord Shiva married Parvati.
Later, Kaamadeva's wife, Rati pleaded Lord Shiva to revive her husband. Lord Shiva gladly accepted to do so.
During the reign of Prithu, an ogress named Dhundhi, who devoured innocent children, was chased away by the shouts and pranks of courageous village youngster. She had won several boons from the deities that made her almost invincible. However, due to a curse of Lord Shiva, she was not so immune to the pranks and abuses of young boys as she was to weapons and arrows.
It is believed that Lord Krishna's evil uncle Kansa seeked the help of Pootana, an ogress, to kill infant Krishna by feeding him with poisonous milk. Pootana disguised herself as a young, beautiful woman and fed baby Krishna with her poisoned breast.However, Krishna sucked her life as well as her milk, revealing the monster behind the beautiful woman and laid her to death.
As a child, Krishna was very playful and mischievous in nature. He was very jealous of Radha's fair complexion. So, he asked the reason for his dark color while Radha was so fair to his mother Yashodha. His mother playfully suggested him to color Radha's face to any color he wanted. In a mischievious mood, Krishna captivated by his mother's advice applied color on Radha's face making her look like him.

Holi celebration begins with lighting up of bonfire on the Holi eve signifying Holika Dahan. The actual celebration begins the next morning after Holika bonfire. People throw gulaal and other dry colors at each other. Water balloons and pichkaris are used to drench each other with colored water. Groups sing and dance, some playing drums and dholak.
Dishes like gujiya, mathri, malpuas and other traditional delicacies are enjoyed to the utmost. Chilled drinks and Bhaang are also consumed. Later, in the evening, people clean up, wash and bathe and visit their friends and relatives, exchanging sweets.
