Sanchi: Rape and after effects

Lately I was wondering again the way CV's are showing the life of Sanchi after the tragic incident. Usually in a small place like Udaipur, the life of a rape victim becomes really difficult. The victim can not walk on the roads, the family is unable to face the society. People pass comments on the character of the victim and seldom someone is sympathetic.

Even in case of Damini case, even in a place like Delhi, I have heard many commenting the below.

1. Why she was travelling late night?
2. Why she was roaming around with her boy friend?
3. Her parents are just into publicity and minting money.

Even in Arushi case, I have heard many such gossips from people around.

In such a case the victim and her family are troubled to such an extent that they sometimes have to quit the place and move to somewhere else.

However in the show it seems that everyone forgot the episode altogether and started thinking about her marriage. Under such scenarios even the in-laws taunt the girl for being unclean, non-virgin blah blah blah. I hope they show it with some real lights. We do not live in an imaginary/perfect world after all. We have to see how one handles such scenarios and goes ahead in life.

Did not we all see such scenes in Anandi's case too?

Have to disagree with you here. While a lot of people are regressive and blame the victim out of conditioning, I don't think too many people would come out and taunt a victim openly in today's age. Especially after the Damini incident, people's political correctness, if not anything else, have increased manifold on rape and rape sensitivity. People might blame the victim in private, but they usually refrain from it in public fearing backlash, especially in cities.

I don't think people come out and taunt rape victims openly be it in a village or a big city like Delhi.
They may say things in private like the victim must have done something to provoke this kind of behaviour from the man who did this to her.

The rape vitim's identity is not revealed to the public. The cases may make news but the name and the picture never are made public. In case of Sanchi also people may have heard about the case. But they don't know whether it is Sanchi or not for sure.

The trial is conducted behind closed doors only the family of the man accused of rape and the family of the victim are allowed inside to protect the victime from being identified.

So it is quite natural that Udaipur public did not know that it was Sanchi who was the victim.

But now that the family has started to think about marriage and because of Sanchi's condition that it should be revealed to the family of the boy before hand it the news about Sanchi may spread.

In Anandi's case it was different. She was kidnapped by Heth Singh and his men tried to molest her but she was saved in the nick of time by Jagya and was brought back home.
The village talked about it because the word was spread by Heth Singh that Anandi ran away with Shravan .They talked about that and nobody knew about the rape attempt on her except Jagya.

sanchi was raped in a party where all her frnds were prterwards in court, thhey all were asked to give dna samples. Even the neighbours spoke of it once. I do not think people in the small town r ignorant. These things spread like fire.

But still, nobody would taunt her in public.

The news of her is spreading aound is one thing and people taunting about it is another thing.
I don't think ordinary average people who consist of the majority of the society will taunt her openly in public and ridicule for being raped.

They may say things like she should have been more careful etc but taunting her I don't think so.

I agree with other members - people refrain from direct taunting - such things are more in serials/film etc. In Sanchi's case, the identity of the victim was kept secret as is the rule relating to such cases. Even otherwise, the taunting is more covert - like gossips.
In case of Anandi - she was saved by other kidnapper and was not raped - Heth Singh did not want any (physical) harm to her- to give credence to his rumors that Anandi herself went with Shrawan. Jagya came later to her rescue and she was freed.

But I agree that people make life hell for rape survivor and her family in villages and lower class/slum areas of cities - mainly because they come to know of identity of the victim. Like in case of Delhi's Gudiya (a false name just like Nirbhaya given to 5 years old victim) - the family had to change residence several times. Several cases were there in newspapers where the victim was thrown out of school - but the cases were from rural areas.

But the situation is changing. People are more aware and somewhat more sensitive about these cases.

I have different problem with CVs portrayal of Rape and instant transformation of sanchi into a good girl. What are they trying to say - get the girl raped and woh seedhi hojayegi.
Many times reason for rape is not sexual, its to punish or control the woman as was seen in some other rape incidents earlier. I think there was a Bawari Devi incident few years back. She was gang raped because she spoke against Child Marriage.
