Shastri rules out Dhoni as captain for now

Mohali (Punjab), Nov 6 (IANS) Even as Sachin Tendulkar Tuesday refused to captain the Indian Test cricket side, National Cricket Academy (NCA) chairman Ravi Shastri Tuesday said that elevating Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the Test captain would not be apt now.
Shastri said that though finding a new captain for the Indian Test side was the job of the selectors, he would not mind having two captains for the team - one to lead the Test team and the other to lead the One-Day International (ODI).
Dhoni, who is presently the Indian ODI captain, had recently led the team to victory in the inaugural Twenty-20 cricket trophy in South Africa.
'It will be asking too much from him (Dhoni) to captain the Test side at this moment. He should be given more experience. He has much more in him to deliver,' Shastri said at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here.
Asked when the Indian cricket team would have a regular coach, he said there was no reason to rush into appointing a new coach.
'We must get the right man for the job. There is no point in rushing into this matter. We are winning matches presently, so why should we rush.'
Flanked by NCA director-operations Dave Whatmore, the former Sri Lanka and Bangladesh coach who was recently being seriously considered as coach for the Indian side, Shastri said the issue of appointing a coach was still open for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Asked if Whatmore would be considered again, he said he was doing a job presently and was focused on it.
'He is focused on his job. We don't want him to be doing two things at a time and end up as a joker,' Shastri said.
Whatmore himself said that the NCA training programme for upcoming Indian cricketers was quite focused.
'We will not try to change the natural playing ability of cricketers coming to the NCA. We are in the midst of a preparation phase for young cricketers who can play for India,' Whatmore added.
