Ireland THreats To send Bangladesh home!

Irish face Bangladesh spin threat
World Cup Super 8, Barbados: Bangladesh v Ireland
Match starts 1430 BST Sunday

Ireland could not handle Australia's ruthless efficiency

Ireland will treat Sunday's match with Bangladesh as their own World Cup final as they look to pick up their first points of the Super 8 phase.

Despite Bangladesh's wins over India and South Africa, the inconsistency of their batting presents Ireland with a chance of victory.

"When we sat down to look at the matches, we thought this was one game we can potentially win.

"We've got to turn it around and be up for it," said skipper Trent Johnston.

Ireland's confidence took a knock when they were bowled out for 91 by Cup holders Australia on Friday.

But Bangladesh do not posses anyone with the speed of Shaun Tait, or the nagging accuracy of Glenn McGrath and Stuart Clark.

The challenge for the Irish is to find a way to thrive against an attack featuring three left-arm spinners - Mohammad Rafique, Abdur Razzak and Saqibul Hasan - who had combined figures of 4-82 from 26 overs in their last game against England.

"This will be a different sort of challenge," said Johnston.

"Bangladesh have quality spinners and we have been squeezed by spinners in the middle overs so it's one area we have to guard against. We will do our best to counter them and see what happens."

Ireland's shock victory over Pakistan during the first round brought them worldwide attention and they are eager to produce at least one more inspired performance to reward the supporters who have followed them around the Caribbean.

Bangladesh's bowlers pressed England hard in their last game

"We don't want to disappoint ourselves and the Irish fans who have come here to watch these matches. We want to do what we did in Jamaica and send them home happy," Johnston added.

Spinner Kyle McCallam admitted the team have been overwhelmed by the level of support they have received in the tournament, both at the grounds and from back home in the emerald isle.

"It was absolutely brilliant. There are congratulatory messages, cards of well done and good luck for the match against Bangladesh which is our World Cup final.

"I have been playing cricket for 11 years. It's a minority sport but what we have achieved in this World Cup is a great credit to Irish cricket and what it will do for Ireland cricket in the next 10 years is phenomenal."

The semi-finals may only a remote possibility for Bangladesh, but if they can beat the Irish and West Indies they could certainly finish fifth in the Super 8 table which would represent a tremendous performance.

"This is the most exciting period in Bangladesh cricket. We are focused for our last two games and hope to win both of them to finish our best World Cup ever in a befitting manner," said captain Habibul Bashar.

He described Ireland as "dangerous" opponents but believes the combination of Bangladesh's youthful batting line-up and spin-oriented bowling will tilt things in their favour.

"Our spinners have bowled well in all conditions - they can even deliver on green tops," Bashar added.
