Will Sooraj Barjatya get dangerous? MEERA JOSHI

|
Everyone's been waiting for Sooraj Barjatya's next film (it's two years since Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon released). But the director has been busy with a smaller canvas, overseeing the Rajshri's second foray into television, Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki. In keeping with the wholesome Rajshri tradition, the serial is replete with "the right values". And much like one of the characters in his films, Sooraj has put a hold on his own project to help his sister out. "The basic concept of the serial is mine but it's my sister Kavita who's looking after the entire show," says Sooraj. "I've been involved right through, though. I've been reading every line of dialogue, looking into the screenplay and the break-up of the episodes. Since we're returning to TV after a long gap, we'd like to give it our best shot."
Although Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki is a soap opera, it will have no "meaningless drama," says its producer. "There are no scheming women around. Our sensi-bilities won't allow that," he grins. "Our serial is about the importance of roti, kapda and makaan in our lives. No matter how well we may do in life, we must never forget to switch off the fan or the AC when we leave the room. We must know the cost of electricity, the price of petrol and how to open a bank account. The highlight of the serial is the bonding between four sisters and the celebrations, big and small, that they enjoy. Something all of us look forward to in our stress-filled lives. And there's a love story running through."

The serial is jointly directed by Sujit Singh and Kaushik Ghatak (who's handled quite a few episodes of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Sanjivani). Sooraj insists he's happy with the way they've shaped the serial and that at no point did he feel like stepping in.
Once the serial has been on air for a couple of weeks and settles down, Sooraj can return to polishing his next script, which he's been working on for some time now. He's in no hurry, he declares. "I did hope to complete my script by April but I'm not absolutely happy with what I have now. Andar se awaz nahin aayee ke, yes, this is it. I'm going to take my time. After making four films, I'm now going to make what I actually want to. No use making a film just for the heck of it. Making a film is a very personalised affair for me. Once I start my film, I never worry about how the company is doing or how much time I'm taking to make the film. The day my script is done, the film will be launched and I'll complete shooting in three months. Post-production should take another three months, so we hope to release early next year."
So what's the story all about? Sooraj is reluctant to let on much, but says it's highly personalised and something he hasn't attempted earlier. But, he lets on with a smile, "It's a dangerous one." Now that's something worth waiting for.
