I wouldn't settle for mediocrity: Karan

He has to his credit just four television shows, but Karan Oberoi still wouldn't settle for "mediocrity". "I have to feel motivated to take up a new project. I would not want to do a show which I would not like to watch myself," he says. Impressive attitude but what good is it if it doesn't fetch him work? "I don't mind. I'm fairly busy," he adds.
For the uninitiated, the actor is "fairly busy" with Antakshari on Zee, his A Band of Boys commitments and his production house Artistique Unlimited, "which is at its infant stage right now". And he doesn't mind taking up a show that Sunil "funny" Pal walked out on as he brings "a new zing to the table".
"Working with kids is so much fun. I don't read out scripted matter on the show and that's why I'm having a ball. I'm not playing someone and just being myself. The best thing about shooting with children (Sameer, Diwakar and Sanchita on the show) is that they are spontaneous, exuberant and not fake. I have made friends with them and enjoy their banter too," says the actor. But can kids be mean? "If they want to be. But I love them," he says with a smile.
He has recently shot for a video with the "boys" (his bandmates), but asserts that neither is there a new album in the offing nor a break-up. "We are friends more than co-artistes, who just love to perform together. The band is going strong purely due to the equation we share," says the dimpled actor.
Karan, who regrets not having been "media-savvy" for long, confesses being open to "out-of-the-box stuff" like sitcoms (which don't happen on Indian TV much) and cameos (like the one he did in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin). If there is a dearth of interesting scripts, why doesn't he (through his company) initiate something fresh? "We are ideating. Hope something materialises," he acquaints.
