Chapter 9
"Raghu, yeh main kya sunn ke aa raha hoon? Tune Antara se shaadi karne ka faisla kar liya?" Mach Mach asks as he walks into my room. "Tu wapas kab aaya? Aur tujhe kaise paata?" I ask, getting up. "Teri Maa ne bataya. Ab bol, main ek haafte ke liye chala kya gaya, yahan par toh sab ulta pulta ho gaya. Tujhe kabse Antara mein itna interest aa gaya?" he asks. "Main bas Antara ki help kar raha hoon," I say. "Kaisi help? Raghu kuch hua kya?" "Woh, uncle chaate hain ki Antara ki shaadi ho, aur woh bhi mujhse." "Par kyun?" "Unki aakhri khwaish hai," I say and look to see his reaction.
I can tell that he is shocked. Who wouldn't be? It was an all of a sudden thing for everyone. No one had expected it. "Antara... Yeh sab..." he says. I tell him everything that had happened. He grows more shocked and concerned for Antara. "Antara kaisi hain?" he asks. "Ab ke liye toh theek hai par Antara hain na, kabhi bhi kuch bhi kar sakti hai," I reply. It was true. Antara was sensitive in these situations and it was up to us to handle her with the utmost care and attention that she needed. She needed to feel that she would never be alone, which she would never be anyways because I would always be there for her. I would never let anything happen to her.
"Kahin tujhe Antara se pyaar toh nahi ho gaya?" I look at Mach Mach, shocked. Love? And that too with Antara? That was a thought that had never crossed my mind. But what if it was true? What if I was really starting to fall in love with Antara?
"Antara, main teri maadat kar doon?" Rukhsana asks as she walks into the kitchen. I had told her everything and I was glad to have her here with me. After Raghu, Mach Mach and Rukhsana were the people that I was closest with. "Nahi, koi baat nahi, main kar lungi," I say. I was making lunch for Papa. "Waise Antara, tu iss faisle se khush toh hai na?" Rukhsana asks. I stop what I'm doing and look at her. "It doesn't matter if I'm happy or not. As long as Papa's happy, I'm happy," I say. "Par Antara..." she says. "Rukhsana, it doesn't matter. I'm not changing my decision. It's here to stay," I reply.
"Antara, dekho main wapas aa gaya," I turn and see Mach Mach at the door. "Mach Mach," I say and give him a hug. "Kaisi hai tu?" he asks. "Main theek hoon," I reply. He smiles and says, "Rukhsana, tu chal. Mom ko tujhse kuch baat karni hai. Antara, hume abhi jaan padega, Mom se baat karni hain na." "Haan, tum dono jao," I say. They leave and I finish making lunch for Papa.
"Hey," I say walking into Antara's house. She was cleaning up the kitchen when I walk in. "Hi," she says. "Tune Mach Mach ko bataya tha kya?" "Maine nahi, Mom ne usse sab bata diya tha," I reply. "Toh ab kya?" she asks. "Ab... humari sagaai, I guess?" "Right." "Mom ko tujhse iss baare mein baat karni hain." "Tu yahan Papa ke saath re ga? Main Aunty se mil kar aati hoon." "Theek hain."
I head off to Uncle's room while Antara heads off to my house. I was thinking about what Mach Mach had said to me this morning. Love, me and Antara. It was a thought that had never crossed my mind. But was it possible? Maybe... just maybe... I might actually be falling in love with my best friend. Who wouldn't fall in love with Antara though? She was probably the sweetest person on earth. She put her father before herself, not even thinking once about how all of this would affect her life.
"Antara, aao, mujhe tumse baat karni hain. Yeh dekho, in saab meinse decide karo ki tume kaunsi dress aur jewelry pasand hain," Aunty says taking me into her room. The entire bed was filled with dresses and jewelry boxes. "Par kiss liye?" I asked. "Tumari sagaai ke liye. Aaj raat ko humne ek chota sa function rakha hain. Bas hum saab aur kuch aur log. Tumari aur Raghu ki sagaai karani hain," she says. "Aaj raat ko?" I ask. Tonight Raghu and I would get engaged? But- no Antara. You agreed for this now you have to go along. "Haan aaj raat ab jaldi karo." I sit down and look through the dresses.
I pick up a pink dress. It looked sort of familiar; I could swear I had seen it before. "Aunty, yeh dress.. maine isse phele kahin dekha hain," I say. "Yeh tumari Maa ki hain. She wore it on her engagement with your Papa," she replies. This dress belonged to my mom? No wonder it looked so familiar. I had probably seen it in a picture. "Main yahin wali pehnogi," I say. "Mujhe laaga tha ki tum yehi waali lo gi, ab tum ghar jao aur thoda aaram kar lo, sham ko sagaai hai na. Tab tak main Raghu see baat karti hoon," she says. I leave the house and come to my own room. Raghu leaves once he sees me come back. I walk up to my room and pull out a photo album. It was filled of pictures of my mom. I found the picture that I was thinking about and took it out.
My mom looked beautiful in that dress. Like it was meant just for her. A tear rolled down my cheek. "I miss you mama," I say and hug the picture. I wish she was here right now.
