I fell in love with her the second I saw her.
She was short, lanky, pale, with cropped dark hair and a contagious smile. She worked at the bookstore I frequented daily on my breaks at work. Our first conversation was about a book I pretended I needed as a gift. It was all just so she would talk to me.
After that, each day I would make it a point to speak to her each time she worked, and slowly but surely we became friends. We discovered we were alike in so many ways it was uncanny, and shared a love for politics, literature, music, and the idea that love really was what makes the world go round. She was the most interesting person I had ever met. She blew me away with her ideas on religion, government, art. All of the things I myself had felt inside but coming from her, it seemed fresh and revolutionary. She grew more beautiful to me each day, and the closer we became, the more my seams split from trying to hold in my swelling love for her.
Finally I came clean and confessed my attraction to her as more than a friend. At the time, she had just got out of a bad relationship, and she just wasn't ready. It crushed me. I cried, I felt poisoned, I avoided her for weeks. I thought I would never be in love like that again, and why didn't she want me? I was a horrible person, and she must have seen it in me somehow. Of course she couldn't like me- I knew what I looked like, I knew who I was inside.
I wallowed in my depression until one day she knocked on my door, winded and glowing from riding her bike all the way to my house just to tell me she couldn't stand not talking to me anymore. We sat down, cleared the air, and began our friendship again. She is a beautiful, pure, honest, loyal, intelligent, and shining diamond of a girl, and I will always love her, only now my love is different. It is the love of a best friend, who wants every happiness in the world for that girl.
There is a song that contains the lyrics, "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.", and I can relate to it, because no matter how hard I prayed for this girl to be mine, the prayers were not answered. And now I thank God for that, because if we were to have entered into a romantic relationship, it may not have worked out, and it would have never come to pass that she would become such a dear friend.
She is my best friend, and the 2nd best thing to ever happen to me besides my wonderful girlfriend.
