😕 We are in the 21st century, but has INDIA really accepted GAY and LESBIANS for what they are? It is about time that the world stops this ignorance. But, has the country really accepted these people or will it continue to harm the culture? Please share your thoughts.

India is a country in transition. The younger generation doesn't mind differing sexual orientations, but the older generation finds it detrimental to our culture. Some people have embraced the diversity, some are hesitant, some are set in their ways.

While many Indians do want to move for LGBT acceptance, I think people are wrapped up with other issues like corruption, poverty etc.

agree..also there are many countries within india...as in india 1930 india 1950.india 1970 ..so on ..its like timetravel...as you move across the country some areas are just starting to westernize while others are very much on the way and so are the concepts of morality, values, ideals and acceptance of not only LGBT, but also intercaste marriage, women independence and education etc..so when facing this question..i think itll b another 100 yrs before the whole of india truly accepts it!

I cant speak for India. Personally for me the answer depends on what you mean by accept? lol.
If you mean accept as to them existing then sure they are like us and every right to do what they want to do. Personally I believe they should not be punished for it (no laws etc).
If you mean accept as me being okay or engaging in such behavior. lol. Well I dont think I have to answer. lol

Whether India has accepted gay and lesbian is not easy to say. I can only tell my opinion. I do accept them. But even developed countries struggle to accept them and these people always have issues.
The worst part of the society is everyone is treated not equally. Why there is one rule for a rich person and one rule for a poor person? The society is always inclined to find fault with one person or the other as most of the persons in the society don't accept or value themselves. And India is a country in transition and is going through many problems and so the tendency of the society to magnify the faults of one section is all the more seen.

My own opinion is people are born as gays or lesbians for their own soul purpose and that is not something I can question. Gays or lesbians also have divine essence within them and they are also full of love and they also deserve to be loved. They are not to be despised. This is what the Spiritual masters say who know every human being is fully capable. Whether the society accepts the gays and lesbians or not, parents have to be accepting and loving these types of children also. Parents have to be loving them and encouraging them telling them they are not to be despised. Parents have to accept them and value them and not care about what the society thinks.

Some will never accept it sadly. I think that everyone should be allowed to love whomever they wish to.

India and Indians have both become really tolerant towards LGBT issues. But wait! Don't do your happy dance yet. A vast majority of Indians still consider homosexuality a grave or major sin. It's still looked down upon and dismissed as abomination.

Indians are still NOT okay with the idea of same sex relationship or marriage. Clearly, if you dwell in a pseudo-conservative society like India, you are bound to have that mindset, emotions and feelings. But then, India is a cluster of societies - open-minded societies, closed-minded societies, western culture influenced societies, religious societies, etc. etc. etc. Although they co-exist, they don't necessarily agree to each other's way of life, which is why we have riots and protests on a frequent basis.

The point is that India is changing. The society is striving to transition from a very staunch, pigheaded attitude towards such minorities to a more open and broad-minded perspective of social interdependence. They are getting educated on issues related to various minorities and their ways of life and culture. Although the LGBT rights were revoked by the Delhi High Court last year, it shows that India is still ready to accommodate the needs of these minorities. Corruption and religious politics will always stand in the way here - and one must be mentally prepared for it. The nation of India was NOT built on the concept of free speech and thought. Although there's democracy, there's still a dash of hypocrisy and close-mindedness somewhere in there.

So yeah, give it some time, it will eventually get there. However, the rate of resistance will be like no other. India's religious and cultural diversity is the biggest hindrance to any change on a major level.
