Don't mind the format. Please!

So, what comes after 999? This.

This is not me losing. It is about someone else winning. Go on, gloat, Sis. I wrote something, and it is not an episode guide.

Dedicated to a person who's special in my life.

You see, someone special does not necessarily mean, or have to be, someone you'd fall for, suffice for that person to be a part of your life, however big or small the part may be.

So there's someone special, in my life. She's the sweetest thing ever. Yep, it's a she. And I just called her a thing. Ha-ha! And I'm in love with her (don't tell her, it's our 'lil secret, okay?) She's my special someone.

Mere hum dum, mere dost. Mere sabse pyaara dost.

Sis Saima, for loving me.

"Pooh?" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand.

"I just wanted to be sure of you."

-A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

For the rest of you- hope this worth something.

Hota hai, Hota hai, Kuch Kuch Hota hai.

"Why do we have to go to these people's house again?" a thirteen-year-old Humeira

whined for the umpteenth time that morning. It was the second day of Eid, and the

Siddiquis, consisting of Mr Ghaffur and his lovely wife Fareeda, and their three

children, 18 year-old Sameera, sixteen years old Zaroon; and the not so little princess,

Humeira, are on their way somewhere.

Mr Siddiqui has recently managed to track an old family friend, of whom he has lost

contact with after his marriage to Fareeda and has been reacquainted with said friend

via a telephone conversation. Today, he's decided to bring his family over to his

friend's house for a proper reunion.

"One more time. One more time I hear you asking this, there won't be any holiday.

Do you hear me? Not for you. Not for anyone else, we're going straight home.

Understand?"

"But-"

"Shhh Humi, what's wrong with you today, why are you getting on everyone's nerves?
Do you want Abbu to cancel our holiday? As it is everybody's there, and we're here,
why are you making things worse? Just stop whining, we'll be there soon, don't worry."

"But Bhaijaan, it's almost noon and we're not even at this person's home yet, and once we get there, you know how Abbu is! He gets carried away. What if everybody else starts having fun at the beach and all and we miss all of that? Argh! It's so unfair!"

...

"Assalamualaikum, Khan Sahab"

"Waalaikummussalam. Aiye aiye Siddiqui Sahab, aiye. Tashreef rakhiye. Aap hi ka raah dekh raha hoon mein kabse. Waise main aapse naraaz hoon. Bahot dher kardi aane mein. Yeh kya? Bhabhi-ji, you tell me, is this right? How can a friend be so cruel. He got reacquainted with me for over three months as it is, and only now, only now he sees it fit to come see me. I'm holding grudge."

...

"But Abbu we only went there last Eid, again we have to meet them? Is this going to be an every year thing?"

"Nothing like that Sameera-jaan, you know how busy Abbu is. And your Uncle Rashid too. This is the only time we ever get to see each other and catch up. And besides, your Ammi seems to be quite taken by Aunty Dilshad."

"She's a very charming lady I must admit. Like us, they too have three children- two girls and one boy, also middle child, like Zaroon. Too bad the boy and the younger girl were not around. Didn't get a chance to meet them. Anyway, I like the other daughter. She's a doctor, but so humble. Ver humble. What's her name, Sameera? The older one.

"I don't know, Ammi."

Nobody seemed to know.

"Nikhat. Her name is Nikhat,"

"How do you know, Humi? No one else knows."

"Bhaji, I just happened to remember, okay. Besides, I like her too! Ammi, she's so nice! I want to be a doctor too. Just like her."

"Chashmish, whatever happened to, I want to be an Astronaut'? Now, doctor? What do you really want to be?"

"Bhaijaan! That was supposed to be our secret!"

"Ask her Zaroon. Please, do your Abbu a favour and ask her. Every other day she's changing her answer. Such a fickle-minded person she is."

"Really Humi? An astronaut? That was your big secret? Huh! Give me a break. You can't even look at the stars without your glasses. What sort of an astronaut will you be?"

"A terrible one, that is!"

"Ji! Sameera! Stop it! Stop giving her a hard time. Barely fourteen and already you guys are discouraging her. Motivation dene toh door ki baat hai, making fun of her? What is this? And you, Zaroon?"

"Me, Ammi? What did I do?"

"Nothing. Just be quiet everybody. We going to Rashid miya's house and I want

everybody to behave. Especially you, Ji! My children are Masha Allah, well-

mannered. But you? Koi khair nahin. Please, we have to meet the rest too, try not to

get too carried away and forget everything else. These kids made plans with their

cousins, and I too don't want to be late. As it is, we'd be the last to be there. So

please. No dilly dally. Okay? I said okay, everybody?"

"Yes Ammi"

"Yes Boss!"

...

"Finally we got to see the son. My God. He looks just like his father, if not better

looking!"

"Yeah, I observed he was busy, didn't take as much as a glance at us! I mean, only at

the end when Uncle Rashid introduced us that he came forward."

"Well it is Eid, and there were a lot of other people there. He's just doing his part as the host. And then that shoe thing? That was nice of him."

"Huh, please. So he helped picked Abbu's shoes in. Big deal. It was raining, and you

know Abbu and his habits of removing his shoes outside. One nice thing he does and

he's an angel? Please."

"You don't like him so much, do you? Um, I did overhear Ammi and Abbu talking..."

"About what?"

"Um nothing. That's okay. Forget it."

"Spill!"

"Really, it's nothing."

"Humi. Spill."

"Well... Ammi really likes him. And after the whole shoe thing Abbu was quite

impressed too."

"So?"

"Well...they are hoping that he might take an interest in you, and maybe Uncle Rashid

and Aunty Dilshad would too, and then, you know, ask your hand in marriage."

"What? Oh my God! What is wrong with them? First of all, no, he's not good-looking.

And two, definitely not my taste. And three. Look at him. He's dark. And I most

definitely do not like dark men. And besides, I'm only 21, why are they rushing into

this?"

"He and I have the same skin colour."

"Yeah, well, you can have him then."

"What? No, that's not what I meant. I mean you would actually pick a man based on his skin tone?" How shallow, Humeira thought.

"Yeah, of course I will. I want somebody fair. Like me. I mean, please, don't be offended Humi. That's just my choice for a man. I mean, it's my life, so it has to be my choice."

...

"Are you sure, Ammi? I mean she could just be a friend," Humeira whispered to her

Ammi, surprised.

"No, she's not. Of that I'm sure. Just look at them. So close. And she's been here for quite some time now, and he's with her the whole time. Yeah, she's his girlfriend."

"Wow, Ammi, a gori as a girlfriend? Huh, Sameera Bhaji, take that!"

"Why? Don't tell me she fed you the same I don't like dark men' line too. Can't

believe she's like this. Look at him. He's obviously a catch. Even goris want him."

"Well, I guess, it's good then that Bhaji has no idea what she's missing."

"Huh. That's where you're wrong. She knows exactly!"

"Then why all the nakhres?"

"He didn't as much as look at her the first time we all met two years ago. I mean

Sameera Siddiqui in the house and he was more interested in-"

"SHOES!"

"Exactly! So all this nakhres, as you put it, is just her big fat ego!"

"Wow, Ammi, you're a genius! Now that I think about it, she did say something along

those line. You know, the whole, he didn't bother acknowledging us' bla bla. Hmmm."

...

"She said that? She actually said that to you? Begum sahiba, do you have any idea what

this means? Our dream from all these years! Allah ne hamare dua qubool karli. Ya

Malik, tera lakh lakh shukar hai. Fareeda, I'm so happy I can't even begin to tell

you."

...

"Ammi, now what? Sameera is adamant. And we can't force her. I'm afraid you haveto tell Aunty Dilshad." A now 19 year-old law undergraduate, Humeira tried explaining to her Ammi.

"How do I bring myself to even talk to her Humeira? She came to me asking about

Sameera. I didn't even hint it at them that we were interested or anything. They came to us. And she even asked me if Sameera is seeing anyone, and I told her,

'Not that I know of.' Now they are expecting an answer. Humi, kya karoon?"

"Ammi. Main jake baat karoon?"

"Oh, my darling sweetheart! Ammi ke liye tum baat karenge? That's why I love you

so much. But nahin beta. This is something your father and I will have to do. Anyway

your father said he would talk to Rashid miyan, and just say that Sameera is seeing

someone and we'll just leave it at that. After all, Dilshad only said she wanted to

introduce her son to Sameera, that's not even an exact proposal."

"Ammi, that was two years ago. We had to miss Eid at their home last year due to that flood. And there wasn't any meeting in between, just Abbu's occasional phone calls with Uncle Rashid. I'm quite sure Abbu won't do this Ammi, you might have to do it, you know how Abbu gets. I mean we're going there tomorrow, I highly doubt Abbu is prepared to talk about Bhaji having a boyfriend."

"I tell you, I don't trust this Aslam fella, Must have done something to your sister for her to act this way."

"Aslam? Oh. You mean Akram? Sameera Bhaji seems to be singing him praises."

"What praises? He's still studying. Our Sameera, Masha Allah has a decent job, with

a decent pay. And settling for a guy like this Aslam/Akram whatever, what is she

thinking. The guy is younger to her even!"

"Just one year"

"How can your sister do this to me?"

"She's in love?"

"What love? Does she not love her parents? How humiliating this is! He's a heera I'll

have you know, Rashid miyan's son. A real diamond. How he'll keep her happy. Just

imagine. He's earning in crores! Maybe more? But, no! Your sister doesn't go for

diamond, does she?"

"Ammi...don't be so hard on yourself, please..."

...

"So, how's work Sameera beti?

"Oh, same old. Nothing new. Torture."

"Oh, torture? Why, beta? Don't you enjoy your work?"

"Well, it's a job. What's there to enjoy?"

Damn, what is wrong with Bhaji, Humeira thought to herself. Aunty Dilshad is such

an angel and being so sweet. Ya Allah. Please don't let Bhaji say something she

should not. Please.

"So, tell me, beta, what's going on nowadays? Any boyfriend?"

Oh dear God, please have mercy, Humeira who was keeping up with her conversation

with Uncle Rashid and Abbu, with Ammi joining in during intervals, thought to herself.

Good, Abbu is going on about some nonsensical nonsense (it's the truth, why deny it

any further) so I hope no one is listening. Zaroon Bhaijaan, how I wish you didn't have

to work this Eid, Humeira continued her never-ending monologue.

Her eyes darted to the other end of the room, looking tentatively at the beautiful specimen her Ammi dearest had long before taken a liking to. Engineer hai boss.

Bhaji, please be mature.

"Yeah. I have a boyfriend."

Kill me now! Humeira who was still eavesdropping, froze.

"Oh, okay. Hmm. Um, er, good, good. So he's working also?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, college friend?"

"Yeah. We studied together."

"That's very nice."*SCROLL DOWN*

Humeira, couldn't take it anymore, saw her plate of sweets, dumped everything in her mouth, took a gulp of water, and swallowed. She took a deep breath, smiled at no one in particular, picked her now empty plate, and got up from the dining table. And quietly made her way to the kitchen. And then quickly washed her plate, all the time thinking, poor Aunty Dilshad, she actually made sure her son was home. Dayum!

She turned back only to bump into someone.

"It's okay, you can leave your plate-"

"Too late, all done." Humeira smiled, palms up, showing her empty hands.

"Oh, you beat me to it!"

Humeira couldn't help the chuckle.

"C'mon, let's go out."

"Yeah.."

Just then-

"Okay, Rashid Sahab, we shall take your leave now."

"Arre Bhabhiji, what's the hurry? Kuch aur chai toh pee lo. Dilshad?" Rashid looked

at his wife.

"Ji, look at Humeira..-"

Huh, what did I do, thought Humeira.

"...kabse time hi dekh rahi thi. Her cousins are waiting for her. Poor girl have to sit

with us old people."

"Lekin Dilshad-"

"Dilshad Bi, is right, it is quite late, and so many calls have come, kyun Humi beti?"

"Er..yeah. Yeah. But please, not on my account. I'm fine here." Three set of eyes on

her. "Er, I mean, hehe, uh, with classes and all, such luxury is not always, you know,

um available." What? Oh God, please just get me out of here. Humeira, couldn't take it

any longer.

"Classes?"

"Yeah, Nikhat Bhaji! Classes." Humeira let out yet another fake giggle.

"You know Asad, this one is studying to be a lawyer."

"Hm. So I've heard. So... enjoying yourself, Miss lawyer?"

"Miss lawyer? HUH. Okay... I mean, it's okay. I mean, I have my moments."

A shrilling phone ring disturbed their almost conversation.

"Uh, it's Nuzzhat...my cousin.." Humeira said to no one particular, "I'm really sorry I

have to take this. Been dodging her calls for the past couple of hours."

"Chaliye phir, I guess we really have to get going. You know these youngsters, Rashid Sahab, it's all about having fun to them."

"But-"

...

"You know what I actually like from the movie? You remember at the beginning

there were rows and rows of the invitation basket? The ones they wrapped

oh-so-beautifully, with all those other items. Like a saugaat tray. We should totally do

something like that for Sameera Bhaji's wedding. Just imagine the look on

everybody's face! Especially Khala Haseena! That would be such a treat!"

"Why would I want to spend good money on all that. What has she done that would make me want to give her the best. But you're right. The baskets are very nice. Hmm. Maybe to just immediate family members. That way you can see your Khala Haseena's face. I have no idea how I am even related to her. So much jealousy and greed."

"You say the same about me and Bhaji. But she's every bit my sister as she is your daughter."

"I know, I know, and now her wedding, so many things to be done. I see if she lifts a finger to do anything. By the way, would Akram look good in that kind of kurta Ranbir Kapoor had on? What song was that. The girlfriend wali something."

"Dilli wali girlfriend?"

"Haan, wohi."

"Okay, I guess. Just don't expect him to look as good as Ranbir. Or his friend. Did you realise, the friend is that guy from the Tum Hi Ho song movie. Wait, Dilli wali Girlfriend, is that also your favourite song from the movie?"

"Yes! That one and the other one, the Holi pichkari one."

"Balam pichkari jo tune mujhe mari toh seedhi sadhi chori sharabhi ho gayi. Aa

jeans pehen ke, jo tune mara-"

"Humi! Shh! I didn't ask you to sing the song! How do you just burst into songs, I

don't know. We're at a mall! The supermarket, to be even more precise! So, I take it,

that's your favourite song too? I thought you would have preferred the Badtameez

one."

"Mane na! Mane na! Ha-ha! No, and no! My favourite is Kabi- Ammi!"

"What? Why are you whisperi-"

"Too late..." Humeira smiled, that fake smile. Or was it?

"Arre, Aunty Fareeda. Assalamualaikum. How are you?"

"Ammi!"

"Huh? Oh, uh, Waalaikummussalam, beta. Allah ki Fazal se main bilkul theek hoon. Alhamdulillah. You tell me, how are you? Aur ghar mein sab kaisa hai?

"Everybody's fine. Uh, hey Miss lawyer."

"Hi... Uh, you work somewhere nearby right?"

...

"For the first time ever, it gives me immense pleasure, to introduce to you, Mr and Mrs

Akram Aslam!!"

"Ammi, Humeira looks good, nahin? If only she would get rid of that horrid glasses of hers. But then again,-"

"You won't have me any other way!"

"Oh, hey Munchkin. Ammi kahan chali gayi? By the way, great job welcoming the guests and introducing Bhaji and *ahem* Jeeju.""Thanks, Bhaijaan. You're the best, you know that? And oh how I've missed you! Why do you have to work so far away! You've been missing a hell lot of *ahem* Jeeju jokes!"

"Uh-oh! Hey sis, just pretend like you're talking to me."

"But, I am talking to you!"

"No, well, yeah, but I mean-"

"Zaroon! Is that you?"

"No, it's my twin brother." Zaroon mumbled.

"Oh dear, is that-?

"Yep."

"On it! Just tell me when."

"Hey Tanveer. Thanks for coming. And Aunty Razia didn't come? Please, help yourself to some food, uh Humeira here will keep you company. Humi, where did you say Ammi was again?"

"Wait, Zaroo-"

"No point. He's not coming back." Humeira meant it in more ways than one.

"Hmm. Oh, um, hey. Who's that family? And is that guy with them too?"

"Which one? Oh. Um that's Abbu's, I mean, our family friend. Yes, that guy is with them too. Why do you ask?"

"Isn't he Asad Khan, the famous engineer?"

"He's famous? I had no idea."

"Um, no, sorry, Tanveer. I uh, I don't really know them. So yeah, I can't be introducing you, right?"

"C'mon, now. Take me there, pretend to go say hi, and introduce me to them. I'll do the rest."

"Fine, I'll do it my way then."

Damn. Damn, damn, damn.

"Uh, Bhaijaan-"

"Good, you got rid of her. Now why do you look so drained out like that."

"Bhaijaan, Tanveer's sight landed on the Khan's"

"Great. Just great. Must be Uncle Rashid's son."

"It is. She said so herself."

"Well, then, there's nothing much we can do about it, is there. Tanveer is their problem now."

"But Bhaijaan, what if she ends up-"

"What, marrying the guy? Well, if that happens, then you get to choose to be from the

ladke walon or ladki wali. And maybe, being the darling baby you are, they might

even ask you to be their flower girl."

He's only 11 years older than me. Surely it wouldn't- Stop! Humeira chided herself.

Let's not go there. Let's not.

...

"Ammi, 37 minutes, with slight traffic, 23 minutes with no traffic, and up to an hour

and a half with heavy traffic."

"Make sure you have a full tank of petrol. Can last you for the week. By the way,

have you spoken to your head of department? Don't you get parking benefits as well.

I mean, they should definitely provide free parking."

"Yeah, well, I am happy taking the bus, but you guys insist that I should drive to work,

so these are simply the things I have to put up with. By the way, who's card is this?

Such fancy cover! To Mr and Mrs Siddiqui and Family. Let me just open it up...We

respectfully request the honour of your benign presence and blessings on the Nikah

Ceremony-"

"Yeah, that came this morning. It's Rashid Sahab's son. And, no, it's not Tannu."

"-of Asad Ahmed Khan and Zoya Farooqi."

"Nice name, haina? Zoya. Well, I bet she's a gem of a person. Asad is."

"I guess he finally found himself his shareek-e-hayat..."

The end.

Or is it?

*THE ALTERNATE ENDING*

"Yes, Ammi, don't worry. I'm almost there... Yes, I know it has been more than half an hour, bas pohnch rahi hoo. Main phone rakhti hoon, okay? Jee. Allah Hafeez."

BAM!

"Ya Allah!"

"Bismillah Bismillah Bismillah... I'm okay. I'm okay. Take a deep breath Humi. You're fine. Just fine. Allah. My car!"

"Hey you, Mister! Andhe ho kya! This is my lane! Bike ke lane wahan hai. And. Look just how bad you totaled the front portion of my car! Look! Yahan bhi dekhiye. Why are you still-Oh no! Is that...Is that...Blood? On your arms? Are you okay? Allah! Bismillah Bismillah Bismillah. You're standing. You're standing! That means you're fine, right? Say something! And let me see. Wait, why are you not taking off your helmet, at least no head injury. No, right! Hopefully. Maybe a concussion? Why are you not saying anything? Allah! Are you okay? Wait! Let me help you with that. You've injured your arm. Here, give me your helmet. Are you-"

Eyes met, helmet hanging mid-air, all forgotten.

HONK!

"Can I have my helmet back please? Of course, if it's not too much trouble."

"Huh? Oh. Yeah. Here. Um, are you o-"

"I'm fine! No thanks to you!"

"Huh? What...? Excuse me! No thanks to me-... Why you-... Are you serious! It is you that came into my lane, riding that bike at God knows what speed and you banged me. I mean into me. Uh, I MEAN YOU KNOCKED MY CAR! And you dare give me attitude? Hathiye. I'll take pictures. This would be proof. Now what do I do with my car. As it is it's my first day at work and on top of it- ALLAH! My work! I'm so late! Oh no! Oh, NO!!!"

"Wait, um calm down, uh here's my card. I'll get the workshop to repair-"
"WAIT! How can I be sure I can trust you? And then your arm. Argh! I'm calling my brother. You just wait. No, Bhaijaan's not here...Abbu? Yeah, I'll call my father. Dhant kane padhegi. But that's okay. Hota hai."

...

"So, Miss Siddiqui, was it?"

"Yes, Sir. Am so sorry again. Late on my first day!"

"That's okay. So Mr Qureshi has personally asked that you join his team of research for his upcoming trial. This is a huge start. Working with my father on his case. But, don't you worry, you won't be doing only research work here. I've lined up a few cases that you shall be assisting me with. And for the next few months, you're our get-to girl. Okay? Any questio-"

"Hey Imran, AM FAMISHED! Chalo! What are you still doi-. Uh, sorry, I didn't know you had company. 'll wait outside."

"Hey man, come on in. Let me introduce to you our newest pupil. Miss Humeira Siddiqui. this is one of our firm's finest lawyer Mr-"

"Uh, so sorry, I'm so clumsy, I was trying to get up and my bag fell. Let me just pick all this up."

Humeira stuffed everything back into her bag.

"Uh, you missed this."

"Hmm?"

"This. This name card of a certain Ayaan Khan-"

"Oh that, yeah. That's the guy who knocked my car earlier today. I was so mad I could hardl- Sorry, why am I telling you this? By the way, hi. I'm-"

"Huneira Siddiqui."

"Uh, It's Humeira."

"Already on first name basis, are we. Well, if you insist. Nice to meet you, Huneira."

"Hum-."

"Uh, that would be all for now Miss Siddiqui. You can go back to Miss Chand's office. Shall we, Haider?"

Thanks for reading.

Wow!
That was amazing nigga! Really!
I loved the way you blended everything - The 'complexion-discrimination', greed, bride-bridegroom age stereotypes, sibling rivalry, family cold wars.. and the list goes on.

Beautiful piece of work FaRz, I'm really proud!

And the best part is, you actually made me like Humeira, a girl with whom I can NEVER sympathize.

Also, I initially thought it'll be about Humeira and Haider.
Then came Rashid, so I thought, well, Ayaan and Humeira maybe?
With Asad, it appeared to me as if it was Asad and Humeira you were shipping! O_O
But then, you settled for the perfect OTP, Asad and Zoya.. and I LOVE YOU FOR THAT.

Applaud worthy writing dawg, very very intriguing! 👏

Keep writing more, pretty please?

Edited - BAM dawg! You give us a HuHa too! Not bad, not bad.. with some Ayaan, even better!
Amazing job nigga, fudging creative!
