TV showmakers give literary adaptations a twist
There is one thing common among these shows: Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Lapataganj, Saraswatichandra, Tumhari Paakhi, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Ekk Nayi Pehchaan. These shows are based on literary works by renowned authors. While literary adaptations for the small screen have always found takers in Hindi GECs, it is also seen that the script undergoes some changes to make the content suitable for the TV viewers.
Whether introducing new elements into the original novel or story is a formula for success is still debated, the creative personnel favour a contemporary theme to the storyline which leading to intrigue value. At the same time, the telly fraternity feels, the story treatment on a story/novel is different when told from the small screen perspective. And it's the creative team that decides whether it requires a different treatment.
Agrees actress Divyanka Tripathi. "A portrait can be described in pages in a novel with a suffuse of nice words connecting each other, while the same portrait can be shown in about two to three frames on TV. The detailing of the narrative is different in a novel and a daily soap and that's the reason why the treatment differs," she says.
