Everything about Alia Bhatt's home is rooted in the modern. From leather furnishings in shades of cream and brown to neon lights in her walk-in closet and polished-wood furnishings. Surely, her beautiful contemporary home is not limited to one stylistic thread. "Innovative and futuristic are words that describe my mother's (actor Soni Razdan) aesthetic sense," smiles Alia. "Mom has done up most of our house along with my maternal grandfather, who's an architect. He has designed it and everything else is my mother's influence. She's brilliant with interiors."
Even Alia's room is Soni's brainchild. Says the actress, "My mother knows what I like. So it's easy to leave things to her. But I also like to add my own touches to my room every now and then. So after every six months or a year, I change something in my room. Either the colour of the walls or the positioning of my paintings. My sister (Shaheen Bhatt) helps me a bit with that too."
Not many know that all the stunning paintings in Alia's room are made by her. Ask the actress about her love for painting and pat comes her reply, "Oh, I love it. It's a big stress reliever. I am feeling bad about the fact that I haven't been able to paint for a while because of my crazy schedule. But I do intend to get back to it as soon as possible."
Elaborating further on her mother's artistic sense,she adds, "My mother loves paintings and good photography. That's why there are paintings and pictures all over the house. Sometimes she even likes some strange kind of portraits. Like there's a huge picture of sand dunes here and mountains there. However, if you look at the space as a whole, you realise they add character to the house."
Though Alia feels the living room area is the most beautiful space in her house, the actress prefers to relax in her room or her den. "The den is where there's a big TV and sofa, so I can just laze around there. My dad (filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt) spends a lot of time there too. And when I need some alone time to unwind, I chill in my room. But when my mom is around, I hang out with her in her room."
Question Alia about why she has such few pictures of her in the house and she giggles, "I don't like my pictures to be blown up in the entire house. How can someone be so full of themselves? It's not only my house, na. Four other people live here. So if any pictures should be blown up large and put up they should be of my parents. It's their house."
Another space that excites Alia is her newly built walk-in closet. "I always wanted a walk-in closet," she says, enthusiastically. "So when mom realised that my clothes were falling out of my cupboard, she decided to make this closet for me. But it's not just my walk-in closet. My sister's cupboard was overflowing too, so she has kept some of her stuff here."
According to the actress, it's the simple, clean look of her house that has a soothing effect on visitors and friends. "My friends tell me that my house gives out a very warm and calm vibe. I guess that is because my mother has done it up so tastefully." We couldn't agree more.
