With Abhishek's wedding two days away, veteran mehndi specialist Abida Devraj fondly reminisces about the Jaya-Amitabh low-key wedding, held way back in 1972. She was called in to apply mehndi on the young bride-to-be's

(Jaya Bhaduri) hands on January 19 that year. Abida, of course, regrets the fact that she isn't doing the honours this time round for Jaya's daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai. This time, Veena Nagda has been chosen to render her services in the mehndi department.

Recalling Jaya's mehndi night, Abida says, "It was a secret wedding and no one knew about it. I got a call from Jaya's designer, who asked me to go over to a Malabar Hill address. They sent a car for me and I reached there at 9 pm. I was surprised that I was called to apply mehndi, since I was very new in the industry then. I realised that I was chosen since it was such a low-key affair. Amitabh and Jaya came straight from the sets. The mehndi and the marriage ceremonies were held at Jaya's uncle's house. Not a soul knew about it."

About Jaya's preferences, Abida says, "Jaya was not very demanding about the mehndi, apart from the fact that she wanted it applied in thin lines. I had used a silver stick for the mehndi, as these sticks are used to make thin lines (compared to the normal mehndi cones). No one was present except Amitabh's brother, Ajitabh, and Jaya's sister, Rita and a few close relatives. It took my assistant and me four hours to apply mehndi on her hands and feet. Jaya was very sweet and co-operative and we bonded well."

She adds, "I was called the next day too, to apply mehndi for her cousins. In fact, Jaya also called for me for Amitabh's cousin's mehndi ceremony at Marine Drive later. Jaya's wedding was a very low-key affair and not many people were invited, just like Abhishek's wedding."

Abida's only regret: "I really wish that I could apply mehndi on her daughter-in-law's hands too…"

Don't know if this is accurate. Abid amentions Jaya's sister Rita. If she means Rita Bhaduri the television and Gujarati movie actress, then Rita Bhaduri is not related to Jaya in any way.
