Hey lovely people,
Just before I begin, I want to wish all of you on a forums a very happy valentine's day whether you're single or taken :) Hopefully you all got to spend some quality time with all your loved ones. Now back to what I wanted to say:
Everyone has had mixed reactions to MJ cutting his hair even though Viraf looks absolutely amazing in whatever look they make him sport because they felt that his long hair was what defined his character. Yes, I do agree that MJ's long hair was significant but I don't agree that the CVs gave him a haircut because he wanted to impress Tara.
Since the hair was a such a defining characteristic for MJ, it would be really silly if his hair was cut off simply because he wanted to impress somebody. Like everything else in EBI, I sensed that there was a deeper meaning behind this change of look.
For me, his hair was a manifestation of his inner bestiality as he had been portrayed as the heinous criminal who raped and murdered a girl who also had a dark and painful past. This is further backed up by the fact that when he had been mistreating Tara, he always had his hair out whereas when he was meeting Tara as her stranger friend, he always had his hair tied back in a ponytail. This clearly shows that the writers used MJ's hair to symbolise the duality of his character - The monster and the saviour.
You might ask but why did he have his hair out even when he changed his attitude towards Tara? I think this was the case because there were still a part of him that was stuck in the painful past which made him uncertain about his relationship with Tara. Had Radha not been found, MJ would have tried his level best to make sure that Tara never got involved with him any further. He still had thoughts of dying and going back to jail so that's why his hair was out. That inner beast was still alive inside of MJ.
My theory is that after finding Radha and confessing his love to Tara, he has realised that he actually has a chance at living a happy life with Tara. Suddenly his painful past doesn't bother him anymore and he's starting to live life in the present with an optimistic outlook for the future. Tara's ek boond ishq has somewhat quelled that inner beast and has forced him to come out of that depressing and gloomy state.
This new found confidence and love has made MJ more conscience about his appearance and also about the fact that he needs to start afresh. Cutting MJ's hair is a symbol of him breaking away from that inner beast and his past to live a more positive present and future with Tara. Before he wasn't bothered about grooming himself or looking his best because he didn't any point in making effort when he was going to die anyway but now he has a chance to change his life around.
On a personal note, I had really really long hair for about 6 years until I decided to cut it to up my collarbones this summer. I did this because I needed a different look and a change in my outlook as well. Since I'm in year 12, I wanted to start on a fresh note and my haircut was so refreshing that I felt more confident about myself and it has really made me see my life in a different way. That's also why I feel that MJ's haircut is more significant than what most people think :)
Do leave your thoughts behind :)
Love,
Shegufta xx
