In town, Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra show us what it takes to conquer the world with just a smile
Parineeti Chopra is happy. She has managed to dig into mishti doi and rosogolla, escaping the prying eyes of her current 'trainer' Sidharth Malhotra. When we catch the duo, post lunch, they are busy doing chherkhani in not-so-filmi style. In the midst of all the masti, a phone starts ringing and the peppy Shuddh Desi Romance track fills the air. "I don't want to hear this ringtone now. I am totally in the mad scientist mode," says Parineeti with a wink. There's hasee, a lot of it. But does hasee also meanphasee? The duo shoots, we listen in. Excerpts:
How did you guys find the city?
Parineeti: How do you guys say it, bha-lo-ba-she?
(Bha-lo-ba-shi, we chip in)
Sidharth: I have been to Kolkata to promote Student Of The Year. She is here for the first time.
(Parineeti gets cozy on the couch, with both her legs tucked in. As our photographer starts clicking her, she shoots, "Oh no, don't click me like that." Sitting up straight, she smiles and says, "I have an image to maintain now.")
So, are you really concerned about your image?
P: Never. Actually, (points at Sidharth), he is posing so nicely for the camera, iske paas main aiwwe hi baithi rahun... looks rude na? It's just to do with manners. Nothing to do with my reputation.
S: As far as I am concerned, you can lie down and give the interview. I'm least bothered.
Have you had time to explore the city?
P: No yaar, not at all. I really want to see the Howrah Bridge, man. Please make it happen,na... I should have a photo standing on the Howrah Bridge.
So, you want to shoot in Kolkata?
S: Oh yes, definitely. Coming to Kolkata for shoot will be awesome. It doesn't matter where. But sadly, I don't have any script set in Kolkata right now.
P: Neither do I!
Sidharth, when you came down last, you were still a little awkward with press cons. Now you look much at ease...
S: Really? I think that's true. You learn as you move forward. Hopefully, even in the film, you will see a difference in my performance.
Having lost oodles of weight, Parineeti looks steaming hot...
P: Whoo! Thank you so much, yaar. I really don't know how much in kilos. I am more concerned about the inches. But my clothes are fitting me better now. So I guess I am on the right track.
There was a time when you were not comfortable with sleeveless clothes. How is it now?
P: Yes, I felt awkward in sleeveless clothes. I wanted to look good. I wanted to look hot. I used to wear only black and full sleeves. I was very conscious with my body. I still am, but gradually I'm getting a little more comfortable with the way I look.
Coming back to Kolkata, what food did you have here? P: Itna meetha khaya, mishti doi and rosogolla.
You know what people say " that you come to Kolkata and your weight shoots up...P: (With a shocked expression) Excuse me?!! Oh my god, I really need to have only apples from now on (Picks a slice up from the table in front). Par maine kaunsa 15 rosogolla khaaye hain... ek aadha hi toh khaaye hai bas.
So, do you take diet tips from your cousin, Priyanka?
P: I take diet tips from Sidharth. He is my trainer.
S: She teaches me theth (colloquial) Punjabi and I give her diet tips.
Leaving the weighty issues behind, it seems you are the flavour of the season. InKofee With Karan's latest season, most of the guests have hailed you as the one with the brightest future, when compared to Shraddha or Alia. How do you react to that?
P: I am elated and humbled at the same time. I had no idea that the actors you are talking about had any clue about my existence. I hope that I never let them down.
How true do you think is the adage, 'Hasee Toh Phasee', also the title of your current film?
S: Hasne matlab ladki pura phas gayi, aisa nahin hai. It's not the end, just the beginning.
So you mean, ladki phas gayi, to it's the end?
P: (bursts out laughing) Sid, I am worried about your love life.
S: Arre, not like that. I just think that the chase is the most fun part. But if a girl smiles, it's a positive sign. It's the first signal of approval...
So Parineeti, what kind of a smile signals approval?
P: The flirting kind of smile can be a lie. Even the cordial smile can be a lie. I think the best smile is the open, genuine smile. If somebody makes you genuinely laugh, and your story takes off from that kind of a smile, that is the best way to start a relationship.
So,what kind of a man are you looking for? Or is there already someone whose smile can make you go weak in the knees?
P: Uh... no. Nobody right now. I would like a person, who has a great sense of humour. I am quite an enthusiastic person. He should be able to keep up with me. Somebody who will understand my way of life. And he should, very importantly, smell good.
And what kind of a girl are you looking for Sidharth?
S: Mujhe agar pata hota, toh aaj main uske saath hota. On a serious note, I don't have any set rules when it comes to a relationship. Woh ek entry value jo hoti hai, it's very important to me. I would like someone who is honest and endearing. I would hate it if somebody smiles at me just to cover a hidden agenda.
Parineeti, you are so effervescent, so energetic. How do you keep up with the drudgeries and still manage to be so upbeat?
P: Oh, I have always been like that. Aisa nahin ki mera mood kharab nahin hota. But I barely need 10 minutes to come out of depression. I love to have fun with whatever's at my disposal.
Is that the reason why you've been a natural in front of the camera? Because basically, you were just playing yourself?
P: I wouldn't say that. But it just means, I am doing a good job and you can't spot a difference between Parineeti and the characters. Cheers to that!
