Second Innings Bulletin: Australia Vs Sri Lanka
By Renin Wilben

Aussies march on

Australia continued to be aggressive even after Clarke left. Ponting rocked back and cut a short ball from Bandara through point for four.

Andrew Symonds charged down the track and clubbed Jayasuriya to long-on for six. In his next over, Jayasuriya bowled a full toss and it was all too easy for Symonds as he dispatched it over wide long-on for another maximum. Jayasuriya then dropped one short and Symonds was quick to latch on to it, cutting it for another four.

Bandara was next in the line of attack. Symonds dispatched the bowler to midwicket for consecutive boundaries, one via a sweep and the second through a powerful punch.

Both Ponting and Symonds were lucky to survive run outs. Symonds' straight drive hit Jayasuriya's fingers and almost deflected onto the stumps. Ponting survived as he got his bat down just in the nick of time. Symonds then slipped going for a run but a bad throw saved him.

Australia were doing it easily. They were 182/3 after 33 overs.

Bandara gets Clarke

Michael Clarke fell for 23 trying to drive Malinga Bandara through extra cover but hit it uppishly and Dilshan took a good low catch.

Clarke and Ponting carried on from where the openers left. Ponting whacked a short ball from Bandara through the off side field and then slammed him down the ground for boundaries.

Clarke meanwhile cover drove overpitched deliveries by Fernando for consecutive fours, the first of which brought up the Aussie 100. He then charged down the track and gave the same dose to Bandara. But the bowler got his revenge as Clarke fell to the same shot that gave him most of his boundaries.

The Aussies milked Sanath Jayasuriya, bowling from the other end, to reach 132/3 after 25 overs.

Aus lose openers after great start

Russel Arnold got Sri Lanka the first wicket of Matthew Hayden but only after the Aussie openers had added 76. Hayden tried to slam Arnold on the on side but sliced a catch to Dilshan at short midwicket. He made 41 off 30 balls.

Gilchrist was then trapped lbw by Arnold for 30 with a quicker delivery.

Before being dismissed, Hayden decided to take on the Lankan attack after a reasonably slow start. He slammed Maharoof for six to long-on in the 6th over and the innings went into overdrive after that.

Hayden went on to pull Maharoof for consecutive fours and also got two more off Nuwan Kulasekara, slamming a short delivery and lofting a fuller one to long-off.

Arnold was then introduced in the attack and Hayden greeted him by walloping him over extra cover for a six before the bowler had the last laugh.

Gilchrist, at the other end, took a liking to Fernando. He drove the bowler down the ground, guided him to third man and gently pulled a slow, short ball down to fine leg, all for boundaries before Arnold struck again.

Fernando could have had Gilchrist earlier when the batsman failed to pick up a slower ball and hung his bat out. But the ball just cleared Arnold's leap at short cover.

Despite losing their two openers, Australia were well placed at 85/2 after 15 overs.

Slow start by Aussie openers

Dilhara Fernando bowled a terrible first over, conceding 11 runs. The 4th delivery of the over was a wide down the leg side. Next delivery was a no ball and Gilchrist punched it to midwicket for three. Hayden came on strike and flicked the bowler down to fine leg for his first boundary. Fernando bowled a couple of more wides before the long over finally came to an end.

Gilchrist got his first four by driving Farveez Maharoof, piercing the gap on the off side. That apart, he kept it tight not giving much width to the batsmen.

Fernando made a good comeback in his second over, bowling a maiden by maintaining a nice line and length.

Fernando bowled another no ball in his next over but Sri Lanka did a decent job, restricting Australia to 18/0 after 5 overs.
