Chapter 3

Day and the dusk.

Ishita was still sniffing into her tissue while Raman was lost in thoughts of little Ruhi, Her soft tiny hands rubbing his cheek, her excited squeeze when he was sdfghjkl;saying bye to her. He felt a strange sense peace. After many trying days a moment of sweetness. He had forgotten all that was good in his life. The past few years and his own struggle to come to terms with them all, left him with little option for sweetness and niceness in his life. It was a constant struggle. Struggle against a sense of abandonment when Shagun left him and little Ruhi behind. The mind had strange ways of coping with stress. His outlet was to become a very successful man..the kind that Shagun left him for. In that sense his dream of making it big was a result of his worst fear coming true. He filled the void in his heart with aggression and profit. Mihir ...Mihir was the only source of strength during his dark days. He had managed to bail him out. He heaved a huge sigh of relief knowing Mihir was there again and he could count on him. For support in his fight to get Ruhi back. And now Ishitha was there too...next to him in her car and with him in his struggle for Ruhi! " How on earth did she stop arguing and yelling??" he wondered.

His hand reflexively reached for her knees when she sniffed again. " Ishi..." he sstarted. " BUS" she pleaded "aap itni sweet mat sound karo, phir mujhe phir se dhakka lagega jab app muhjse kahoge ke, you hate me and that I'm a gold digger" she said and continued to cry. " BUUUS" he said this time. He put his arm around her shoulder turned her chin to face him and said quietly " I know I was wrong about you Ishitha ...I know you can dig your own gold from people's mouth...dentist ho bhai!" he tried weakly. " Par mujhe sach me janna hai...parson dupahar ke baad jub tum mere office se nikhli, aur aaj subaah ke beech mein aise kya hua..ki tum mujhse shaadi karne ke liye ready ho gayi ho?" he asked.

"BOHOT KUCH" she sniffed some more."..it's already 9.00 I have to reach my clinic soon. Ghar bee jana hai.. baad me baat karte hain... Mr.Raman...aap hi Ruhi ke liye sahi ho.." she said. " Kya" Raman thought he still had his arm on her shoulder...and could not stop the tears that were clouding his eyes. " Ab hum ghar chalen.." She asked. It now Raman's turn to bite his lip to stop his tears coursing down. Why was he getting so emotional he wondered while Ishita got back to her crying.

He drove and they reached the apartment. They got out of the car, walked up the stairs as if they had done it all their life together! To any outsider they appeared to be a normal " in sync" mature couple. Except that in reality there was nothing normal, or "in sync" about them or so they thought!

They looked at each other one more time before they were to move to their respective doors. Ishita held Raman's hand and asked him aap ake baat karoge mere amma appa se ya main kudh karoon.." Raman put his hand over hers and said " main aoonga...but I want to meet you before that. I feel something has changed in you Ishitha I want to talk to you somewhere quiet. I am free after lunch tell me when you can get out lets talk first and then talk to our families..ok??" he asked." Humm "she said as they walked away with a small smile in her eyes.

Her eyes!!! Raman could barely read anything at work. All he could do was to keep smoking so that he could breathe. He hugged Mihir when he saw him and told how glad he was that his friend was back. "Me too bhai.." he said. Mihir noticed that Raman was restless but he also sensed that this was not Ruhiwala stress.

Raman could wait no more.." Ishita" he said as soon as she picked his call. "please MR.Raman ab main busy hoon...you know digging gold I think I should be able to call you in about an hour". "CALL when are we meeting??" he chided himself for sounding desparate. " I can either come in about 20 minutes for half an hour or meet you after 4 and then get home after we are done. What would you prefer?" she asked. After 4 then Raman said. He swiped his phone off threw it on his table and cursed..." ab char kab bajegi".

He tried to stay occupied signed cheques, cancelled meetings, tried to shut his eyes off and tried to recollect the day. "Her eyes ...why am I thinking of them" he wondered. He felt a strange sense of peace and expectancy ..the same sense of peace when he had hugged Ruhi and Isihta that morning on the dusty pavement. He could wait no more. He decided t go over to Ishita's clinic. He waited in silence for Ishita to run through her patients. He chose a corner away from the door so that she would know of his presence.It also gave him a chance to listen in on the waiting room chat. It amazed him when he noticed how busy her clinic was. It somehow warmed him whenever he heard people talk highly of Ishita, her sensitivity towards her patients etc. " warna aaj kal ke dentists ke pass time nahi hota theek se baat karne ke liye. har waqt paise banane me rehte hai" an old man enlightened him as he was waiting with his grand daughter to be called in. Raman was waiting for the old man's turn too, he was the last and Raman wanted to go in after that!

The man walked out with his grand daughter holding a big teddy bear.. and a bigger smile. Raman's phone was ringing when he walked through her door. "AAP." she looked at him with large round eyes. "AAP hee ko call car rahi thi" she said. Raman nodded and asked "chalen"?? "Sure" she said. " Meri Gadi me chalte hain main tumhe drop kar doonga wapis" he said.

The walked out into the fog hoping hoping to clear the air between themselves.
