I was thinking of posting this book on books thread last night when I read about it.. Poor People (Hardcover)
by William T. Vollmann

From Publishers Weekly
The varied responses to the question "why are you poor?" fuels this meditation on the nature of poverty by journalist and National Book Award–winning novelist Vollmann (Europe Central, etc.). The book, structured as a series of vignettes that span the globe and decades, describes Vollmann's encounters with individuals and families who many would consider poor. A handful of these people, including three generations of women in Thailand and two men in Japan, drive the book, as Vollmann closely examines their circumstances. His alternately sentimental and erudite inquiry is based in large part on his and their personal experience, as an antidote to the official and scientific data about poverty. Indeed, his attempt to understand poverty is deeply entwined with a more poetic inquiry into happiness. Some of the anecdotes set aflight by Vollmann's novelistic attention to details are provocative;others, however, come off as more nostalgic than illustrative, and give the book a desultory feel. But the book's movement between details and thought, spiced with Vollmann's singular style, is intriguing. On the table is not just poverty, but questions of community, fate and perspective. The book's greatest accomplishment is that—unlike other works of this sort—it's neither guilt producing nor guilt absolving. At the end, there's no implied sigh or self-congratulation, for writer or reader. This is the book's greatest achievement.(Mar.)

hmmmmmm...

the fact of the matter is that we not being omnipresent and omnipotent cannot tell whether a beggar is genuine.

I was in India and every beggar I came across I would want to give money to. But my grandparents or parents would say no.. and it would be tht ocassional beggar to whom they would let me give something to. I mean I understand that many ppl have made a busniess out of it. There was once this movie... a few years ago.. and Anu Kappor was a beggar once and later becomes the owner of a company, which tells men where to beg and make money for that.

And when I was India they had adds, like are u AIDING the poor OR ENCOURAGING beggars... more poetic-ish lol.

But the thing is.. many ppl are genuinely poor and sometimes they need that kindnesss from ppl like u n me to get on with life...u never know wat ur act of kindnesss might do

I mean humans have to be optimistic... if u become pessismisstic in this world today, u won't trust anyone or anything... so take everything positively and give with the hope to improve the condition of the poor.. not to encouarge poverty.

Although I must say that I have had enough...and I feel soo ashamed that there are ppl out there without jobs and governments of the developping nations like India or african countries are doing nothing prominent to solve the issue... pisses me off sooo much.

But yeah... personally you should give...Mother Teresa gave without thinking if the slums she was aiding in had genuine or corrupted beggars... she just helped and hoped to improve the conditions of everyone... same way we should give with a good mind and then leave it...

In one sentence: We should give beggars alms. lol.
