Chapter 5:

January 14, 2014. 5:30 pm. Garg House.

Rachna has reached home after the meeting. She is sitting in the living room. Shail has just brought her some tea.

"How was your meeting Rachna?"

"It went well mummy. The client really liked the designs and wants to sign the contract in the next few days."

"That's very good beta! I'm so happy that you are doing well."

"Thanks mummy. Oh and guess who I met at the meeting? Raj!"

"Raj Mehra? What was he doing there?"

"He works as a PA for our client. It's such a small world na?

"Yeah Rachna. Well invite him for dinner some time. He used to come home every night while you and him were in college and it was almost like he was a part of our family. It will be nice to see him after such a long time again."

"Ok. I will ask him. By the way mummy, the client has organized a party tonight. Can I go?"

"Party? I don't know Rachna, you will have to ask your papa."

"Mummy, Raj will be there and so will my boss. I promise I'll be home early. Please let me go."

"Ok, I guess it's fine. I will tell your papa later. But promise that you will be home early?"

"Aaah thank you so much mummy!!! You're the best! And yes I will come home early! I'm going to go get ready ok? And I also have to ask Mayank bhaiyya if he can drop me there?"

"Ok Rachna. Go get ready quickly."

Rachna comes to her room and picks up her phone to call Mayank. Just then her phone rings. It's Kabir's call.

"Hi KT. Did you have some work?"

"No Rachna, I just wanted to know if you were coming to the party tonight."

"Oh ok. Yes I'm coming."

"Good. It's important for you to come so you can network and build a good working relationship with Mr. Kapoor."

"Yes KT. Ok I'll see you at the party then. I have to go get ready now."

"Yeah Rachna. I'll see you there. Oh by the way, do you need a ride to get to the venue?"

"Ummm it's ok KT. I can have my brother drop me there."
"I can pick you up if it's ok with you. I live very close to you anyway."

"What? You live close to my house?"

"Ummm no, I said I am at the office now which is close to your house. I can pick you up, it's no problem at all."

"Oh ok KT. Guess I misheard you. Thanks so much."
"Not a problem at all. I'll be there by 6:30 ok?"

"Yeah sure KT. I'll see you then. Thanks once again."

Rachna is dressed in a pretty sea blue anarkali.

She is about to tie her hair into a braid when she remembers something.

***Flashback***

"Rachna, why do you always tie your hair is a braid?"

"Why? You don't like it?

"No, I like your hair better when its loose."

"Really Kabir?"

"Yeah, promise that you will leave your hair loose for my birthday party?"

"Ok, I promise."

***Flashback end***

You never gave me a chance to fulfil my promise Kabir. You and your entire family just left before your birthday party without giving any explanations. I used to wait outside your house for hours every day to see if you would come back...but you never did. I think mummy and papa knew where you had gone but they would always change the topic when I tried to ask them. And then life just kept moving forward and I also moved on. But I never forgot you Kabir. Every year on your birthday I would leave my hair loose. I used to hope that you would come back to celebrate your birthday with me if I left my hair down. But it never happened.

It was such a surprise to meet dadi that day in the taxi though. Nanhe...how could I forget that nickname? You used to hate it when dadi called you that. When me and mummy visited dadi yesterday she told us that your family had moved to Delhi 15 years ago. She was going to say something about your parents but then she stopped. I tried to ask dadi about you but then mummy said that we had to go home. Are you in Benaras right now Kabir?

Rachna's thoughts were interrupted when her phone beeped to indicate that she had just received a message from KT.

--I'll be at your house in a few minutes Rachna.--

Instead of tying her hair in a braid Rachna decides to leave it loose. She goes downstairs to wait for KT in the living room. When she sees his car pull up to the gate, she says bye to her mom and leaves the house.

Kabir sees Rachna coming out of her house and towards his car. He is mesmerized by her. He is still staring at Rachna when she comes and sits in the car. Rachna blushes because Kabir is looking at her so intently.

"What's wrong KT? Should I have worn something different? Do I look bad?"

"No...in fact you look just like an angel with your hair down like that. You look stunning Rachna."

Rachna feels awkward to hear her boss compliment her so much so she decides to change the topic.

"Can I turn on the radio KT?"

"The radio? Uhhh yeah sure."

Rachna turns on the radio as KT starts to drive.

Both Rachna and Kabir feel uncomfortable so Kabir turns off the radio and they drive to the party in silence. When Kabir and Rachna reach the party they are greeted by Siddharth and Raj.

Kabir goes with Siddharth to meet some new clients while Raj goes to greet some other guests. Meanwhile Rachna is left alone so she decides to find a place to sit. She finds Nitya sitting at table near the dance floor so Rachna joins her. They are sitting together and just watching everyone dance when Raj comes and pulls Rachna onto the dance floor. As they are dancing, the DJ puts on a romantic number and Rachna is about to leave but Raj pulls her close to him. Raj has Rachna is his arms and they are gently swaying to the music...

Tum ho paas mere

saath mere ho tum yun

jitna mehsoos karoon tumko

utna hi paa bhi loon

Tum ho mere liye

khud ko main haar gaya tum ko

In the meantime, Kabir has finished talking to the clients and is looking for Rachna and Nitya when he sees Raj and Rachna dancing together on the dance floor.
