Alexander was not just a brilliant military commander. He really did rule over people's hearts, and definitely had the charisma to lead his men to any kind of battle where they were willing to fight to the death for him.

One of the main reasons is that he went through the same hardships they did and always fought at the front of the battle lines. He wasn't one of those rulers who just gave his generals some orders and sat back in his tent waiting for the outcome. He literally led by example, his courage and genius on the battlefield providing inspiration to his men come what may.
