Chapter 7

Vickram stood in shock at Sugni's strange behavior. She was obviously terrified for some reason and she was shaking like a leaf. Glancing out the door he saw nothing out of the way, but wondered where was Amrita. To get answers to that he needed to calm her down . He hugged her lightly and said, "it's alright, you're safe...Shhh,its ok". He led her to the couch where he got her to sit. "Dhanuma!" he called. She came through to the living room stopping in shock at seeing this girl in Vickram's embrace.
"Dhanuma some water please" She returned a short while later with a glass of water.
"Here drink this" He said She took a few small gulps of the water.
"Are you hurt?" He asked , she seemed to have calmed down some. She shook her head.
"Where is Amrita, what happened?"
Closing her eyes she began composing her self as her panic seemed to subsided .
"I am sorry" she said as she straightened up.
"What Happened?" He asked again.
"I don't know what happened I just got scared."
"Huh?"
She told him what happened, about being dropped off and her walk up the drive.
"Did he hurt you, threaten you?"
"No-no" She shook her head, "I just panicked, I am sorry " She said again.
"It's OK..you are alright. .why don't you go lie down ...get some rest" He said. She nodded slowly she got up and made her way to her room. Vickram watched her go. Sighing he picked up the phone and called Amrita.

*************************************

It was way past dinner time and Sugni did not come down for dinner, after talking to Amrita, who confirmed hos suspicions about her panic attack , he knew she had to get professional help as soon as possible , but had no idea how to convince her to.
Amrita came by after her stint at the hospital hoping that they could get her to open up or at least convince her so seek help.
Taking a tray with dinner, they went up to her room , thinking she might be asleep, they found her sitting on a chair in the dark looking out the window.
Turning on the light they stepped into the room. "Hey you did not come down I thought you were asleep" he said placing the tray on the side table.
" I'm sorry" she said still looking out the window.
Pulling the other chair he sat in front of her while Amrita took a seat at the edge of the bed.
"Sugni why do you keep saying sorry ?, you didn't do anything wrong" He said.
"I am sorry for what happened downstairs, I shouldn't have done that" She said referring to the hug.
"Well you were obviously scared for some reason, no on is mad at you" he said.
"But we would like to talk to you" he said, she nodded not moving.
"San you look at me please?"
She turned her head away from the window and looked at him. She had a look of total loss on her face.

"Did you have a good day with Amrita?" He asked. what ever she was expecting him to say that was not it, he could tell by the surprised look on her face. She nodded. glancing at Amrita she smiled slightly. Amrita returned the smile.
"The hair looks nice , it suits you" She touched her head.
"Hmmm"
"You like it here?" he asked
She nodded, the look of confusion still on her face as to where he was going with this.
"Good " he smiled, "I want you to do something for me?" The look of confusion was replaced by on of wariness, and he could literally see her tense up. What happened to this girl ?he wondered for the umpteenth time.

"Sugni, I know that whatever happened to you was not pleasant, and I know something is scaring you. I would like to help you, Amrita would like to help you but we can't do that unless you let me. We can't go on like this "

"You want me to leave?" She said, tears welled up in her eyes.

"No .. no ... that is not what I meant." He said quickly , to reassure her. " What I meant was , you need to talk to some one about what happened, Amrita is willing to help you, I am willing to help you, all you have to do is let us."

She looked at Amrita who nodded at her and back at Vickram...She shook her head, they could not know, if they did they would hate her.

"Was it that bad?" She nodded.

"Sugni," Amrita chipped in, " I know you are a brave person, look you are here, you have been doing a good job, every one goes through a tough time in life, and no matter how horrible we think it is sometimes, it's not. We are here to help you not judge you, all you have to do is take that little step and let us. And I promise you we will help you, just trust us a little bit. Will you?

Sugni looked a them again, They have been helping her so far, if it was not for Vickram, she would either be dead or worse. She was afraid, but whether it was to trust them, or of there reaction she was not sure..may be both. They were right though, she should tell them. So far all they did was give her a reasons to trust them. "OK" she whispered nodding.

"This boyfriend of yours was that horrible to you?" Amrita asked

"No he wasn't...my" She started , but was cut of by Vickram

"From what I heard and saw I would say other wise" He could not believe she would make excuses for that scumbag.

"Vickram" Amrita said shaking her head. He nodded knew he had to keep calm around her.

"No...you don't understand... He..." She glanced at him then stopped, she shook her head again and started to cry.

"What?" he asked.
*******************

Sugni was at a cross roads, She could'd do this,... she was given this new chance and everything seemed to be going well. All she wanted to do was forget her past. Then she messed it up, by getting scared for no reason. She sat in her room ashamed to go out and face Vickram, how could she explain hugging him. If she told him why she did that , she was sure he would throw her out, for being a mad woman. Yet here he was offering to help her. She did not want to go back there, but could she reveal the truth?. If she did she risked the chance of loosing her new found job and life, if she didn't she risked being kicked out and still loose her new found life.
She looked at him as he started saying he was willing to help her, she was a perfect stranger that he went out of his way to help. In all her life she did'nt think people like him existed, but here she not only saw it, but after meeting Amrita she knew not every one was bad, there was still good people in the world.
She saw the look they gave her, one of sympathy and she also knew she would have to face their looks of horror and disgust when they herd her story.
She fleetingly thought of coming up with another story, but she could not repay their kindness with lies.
Weather they choose to have nothing to do with her , that would never out weight the fact that they helped her when they had no reason to. She had no idea how she could start her story when he started asking about her "boyfriend".

"Hey" Amrita said , placing her hand on her shoulder. Kneeling in front of her she glanced at Vickram then back to Sugni.
"Sugni," she said softly..."It's ok, if you would be more comfortable if it was just us, Vickram would leave ok?" She said
She glanced at Vickram and he nodded.
She shook her head, She owed him that much. "Stay"
"You sure?" he asked She nodded.
"Take your time." Amrita said handing her a tissue.
"What happened that night you ran away from your boyfriend?" Amrita asked.
"He was not my boyfriend." Sugni said taking a deep breath to gather her courage.
"He was my owner" She finished...she saw the look of shock that none of them could hide.

As usual, excellent work Vinnie, i loved how you ended the chapter. I thought that Sugni was not going to tell them the truth but i guess it was the least that she could do given everything that Vickram and Amrita have done for her. I know that there is no love story between them as yet but i guess Vickram does feel a sense of attraction towards her which is evident in his concern about her well being. I can't wait however, to see how this love story will develop.

Vinnie you are an amazing writer. If you should start writing romance novels just know that i will definitely support you. 😊 I will be your biggest fan😆

Chapter 8

"What?, Sugni you can't own another human being, no matter what he says" Amrita said

" No ...he did he paid a price for me" She said

"What?" They asked in unison, both looked at her with confused disbelief on their faces. Knowing they would not understand she started her story from the beginning.

"I am from a small town to the north called Bundel, my mother was a bar dancer, my dad was a drunk and a drug addict, he would beat my mom for money just so he could get his fix. All the money she made he would take it...up to the point were I had to drop out of school simply because she could no longer afford to send me." At 13 Sugni realized that her mother was hiding from her father the amount of money she made to send her to school, he found out and her mother ended up in the hospital. Sugni decided she would never go back, and even with her mother begging her to she refused as she was to afraid what would happen to her mother if she did. Instead she took over the duties of taking care of the house while her mother worked, with the hopes that if he was happy he would spare them. For most part it worked. ...

"When I was 19 mom died. She was always like a barrier between him and me, but now she was gone...and I had to bear the brunt of his anger." She remembered those days like it was yesterday, bracing her self for the rest of her story, she took a deep breath and continued , almost monotonously,. "One night he came home he started ranting as usual, only this time he was packing my clothes in a bag, saying it was time I paid back for free loading off of him. He took me to this place, a really rich looking house like a castle and he says I have to go live their now, as I belonged to the establishment."

"The establishment, what was that?" Vickram asked.
"The establishment, is a place where girls are auctioned off to the highest bidder for a price and a time. they have their own rules" What it was was just a fancy word for a modern day brothel. "I found out that for a few thousand dollars and some drugs , he..he sold.." Her composure was starting to break as she started crying"

"It Ok" Amrita said patting her hand She handed her a glass of water" She took it shakily. After a few minutes Amrita said. "You ok to continue ...or we can do this later." She shook her head, she started it , might as well get it over with.
"That's where I met Amma, she ran the place, took care of the clients, trained the girls. For the first few months, I actually t thought I was in a better place, not really understanding what was going on. See we had to learn to dress a certain way, act a certain way, dance and the other only people I saw were girls my age , girls just like me with little or no family. We were given a new name and at the begining we were treated really well by the older ladies. But for some reason Amma said I was special, I reminded her of her daughter. Later I found out she shielded me from going out. I was there for about six months before I knew what was going on..." Twinkle one of the other girls there dissappered one night, When Sugni asked Amma all she was told was she went on a vacation. a few days later Twinkle was back, but diffrent...she had a scared look and was crying all the time. Sugni kept asking what happened but she said she could not talk about it. After that she noticed other girls to would just vanish and reappear after a while all with that same look on their faces, and non saying what happened to them. Then it was my turn, I was dressed up and taken to this place which was really an auction block, 8 days for $20,000." She would never forget that day standing in that hall looking at these men dressed in their expensive suites and driving their expensive cars, part of high class society, putting a price on a young girls innocents. she wrapped her arms around her middle as she cried she remembered it like it was yesterday...her cries, are pleads going on deaf ears as she realized this was not a better place but the worse hell she could be in

."We were like furniture you rent, used and then returned. Amma would do her best to screen them, but some how she got fooled by Divakar." A high ranking officer, in the police service, he was very charming and generous with his money, which made the boss very happy, apparently he was one of their best clients." She shuddered , thinking about him. "So he picked me, every one thought that might be two weeks in heaven. as he had a reputation of treating the girls to long trips and luxurious treatments. In reality, he was a monster, who probably scared the other girls into silence about what really happens to them. " She started shaking as she recalled what happened. The trip on the plan, where she was degraded and called all sorts of horrible names, by him and his drunk friends. It was amusing to him slapping her around.

It was mightily funny to him that he could do what ever he wanted to her and she had no way out as he owned her. And that was the truth. By the time they got to the rented Town house in that small town, Sugni had been humiliated and abused, and was being treated as a side show to these men.

Up to this point she had met some characters, thanks to Amma's screening most of them were OK, but occasionally she would encounter some nasty ones, who thankfully did not bit for a long time.. But Divakar, he was a wolf in sheep clothing. Who got sadistic pleasure form torturing others.

"When we got to the town house, he just got worse, his friends were no better than him, I thought for sure they would kill me...there was no way I could survive one day with them much less two weeks" even with her arms wrapped around herself she could not control her shaking, as she cried.

*************************************

Vickram looked at her as a sick feeling unfurled in his stomach. To say her story was shocking was an understatement. He could not believe one person could go through so much and still be standing. But some how she was.

"So you ran at at the first chance you got" Vickram said...knowing how she ended up in his van.He had an over whelming urge to break something. Not in his wildest imagination would he think something like this happened.

At that moment Vickram made a promise to himself , no matter what it took , he would help her. Amrita was consoling her. Vickram felt out of place and jittery,. silently he walked out the door unnoticed. He needed to get out of here before he burst.

" There you are" Amrita said a short while later as she walked into the gym, where he was furiously punching away at a punching bag. He stopped and turn to her. "How is she?"

"Asleep, I gave her a sedative, at least she'll sleep through the night" . He nodded.

"I think I'm gonna be sick" She said "I've herd some shocking stuff, in my time but this..." She shook her head blinking back tears. In all the time he had known her he never saw Amrita anything but happy, except now. where her face mirrored the disgust and horror he as sure he was wearing as well.

"So what do we do now?" He asked. after she composed herself.

"Well we got her to tell her story, and naturally she will be feeling raw and exposed. The important thing is to make sure she dose not feel like we are judging her. She agreed for me to help her, but given the circumstances of her situation , and the kind of people we seem to be dealing with, I would like to keep this unofficial. Now that it's out keep a close eye on her...this could go either way although I don't think she would try anything but still."

Vickram nodded...he remember her standing at the edge of that cliff. He prayed it would not come to that.

HE knew they were looking for her, he also knew they would not be able to find her easily as she really has no records. However, from her story, these people cater to a very powerful clientele, and if they were inclined to do some digging they might be successful. His first priority would be hiding her where she could not be found.

"You Ok?" She asked suddenly looking at him.

"Me? Yeah why?"

"I don't know , you want to talk about anything" Vickram Laughed

"Could you stop being a shrink now,? I am fine, a little mad but I am fine."

"Well I better get a move on, I'll be back tomorrow to check on her". She got up to leave.

"Amrita..."

"Don't you dear say it..." She said as she walked out the door with out turning back.

WOW Vinnie
Chapter 6,7, 8 are very hard hitting
My heart goes out to Sugni. We all know these kind of things and worse happens in the real world but when its put across so succiently it really makes an impact.
Sugni's journey from being abused and betrayed by those that are suppose to protect her to trusting another human being (at the moment he is just someone who makes her feel safe) is going to be interesting.
I am look forward to do it.
