A girl aged 18 married to a nine-year-old boy having her 'suhag raat' and even enjoying a honeymoon may sound cringe-worthy and regressive to many, but actress Tejaswi Prakash does not see anything wrong with the storyline of her Hindi television show "Pehredaar Piya Ki". She says it's "progressive" content.

An online petition has been moved for a ban on the TV show, which has been described as "obnoxious and perverted" content that can "severely impact impressionable minds of children".

"Pehredaar Piya Ki", which means "guardian of the lover" raised a lot of eyebrows with its launch last month. Viewers and actors felt that the Indian small screen has hit a new low after "Sasural Simar Ka", where the title character Simar would incessantly shape shift to "dayan" or "makkhi" or some other mystical creature.

Asked if she finds the show progressive or regressive, Tejaswi told IANS in an interview over phone from Mumbai: "I think it's really progressive. But again, a lot of people believe in judging a book by its cover... They love being judgmental and people have nothing better to do than judging somebody else's work. Then okay, what can I do?"

In the show, the 25-year-old actress is paired with the much younger Afaan Khan.

The talk in the industry is that with the Sony Entertainment Television's new show, the content on small screen has hit a new low. What does Tejaswi have to say?

"I dont think so," pat came the reply from the actress, who added: "I feel it's just a story and fiction. It's just a story that we are telling people. So how can you judge any story? You like it okay, you don't like it, so, you don't like it. We are not professors, we are not trying to teach you anything."

Tejaswi also drew a comparison between the show to the most popular American fantasy drama "Game of Thrones", created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

"It also happened in 'Game Of Thrones'... People love 'Game Of Thrones' and if same thing happens in 'Pehredaar Piya Ki', then it's an issue," she added.

But is all the criticism courted by the show affecting the actress?

"No, I'm an actor. I just get my script, go on the set and I perform. Honestly, I'm not on a lot of social sites to be aware of any such comments... I am only active on Instagram. Nobody calls and says anything to me. It's probably the creatives... They should talk to the creatives about the criticism," said Tejaswi, who was also seen in "Swaragini".

She also doesn't find it awkward that a TV show is showcasing the odd pair in a 'suhag raat' and honeymoon sequence.

Asked if she finds this content fit for viewing and not cringe-worthy, Tejaswi said: "No, it's not what a normal 'suhag raat' and honeymoon is like. Obviously, me and Ratan are not married to have babies. It's different. Once people watch it and then they find it yucky or anything, then I would be fine and understand.

"There is nothing wrong that we have shown."

The show's storyline is essentially about a nine-year-old's parents getting killed in a planned blast, and the child's father asking the woman to marry his baby boy to protect him from the people who are trying to kill him.

How would the viewers able to connect with the circumstances and the characters of Divya and Ratan?

"I think the audience will be able to connect and I think they are being able to connect only because of the strong character who is able to decisions at the age of 18 and save his (Ratan's) life for her own happiness... Also, we have shown the fact that she has taken the decision (of marrying him) and it even shows how much freedom she has got from her own family to able to make a decision like that."

Tejaswi feels that "there's lot of strength we are showing for a girl that age."

Interesting on one hand they say it exists in Rajasthan and on the other hand now it became story and fiction suddenly. Now she thinks it's progressive I don't know in what angle how can depicting a woman and young boy in this light be progressive. She is justifying because it is shown in games of thrones it should be fine here too ?What a brainless and brainwashed argument ?For people who are unaware of western culture and civilization divorce rates are rampant about 70 percent with men abandoning women and children in heart beat in the name of freedom, depression is rampant as women and kids go through so much mental abuse with problems of multiple partners and women depicted as some sex object saying they are strong so they can do what they want if Tejaswini thinks this is progressive god help her and her fans. For God's sakes women need to wake up to this and hold a strong position against any of this crap.Just because some other tv show in India or some other country showed nonsense doesn't mean we approve one more regressive show.

Hahahhahahahaha!
Either she is really dumb to draw comparisons between this show and GOT, or she is ready to stoop to any level to defend her crapfest, to garner cheap publicity. Or she was high on some real good stuff when she gave this interview. 😆

GOT is set up in medieval times. It is pure fantasy. It doesn't justify paedophilia, incest, rape or anything. People, even in those times, are shown to look down upon those who indulge in such activities. It doesn't air on primetime TV and has an R-rating.
Her show is set up in recent times. It is not fantasy as she is now claiming it to be. Firstly, everybody was like 'ohh but it happens in rural india even now, they are showing the truth' and now when they are getting the boot from everyone, suddenly it becomes fiction. How convenient. The show justifies this disgusting marriage. It is aired at a time when anyone abd everyone can watch it. It glorifies the marriage with the kid going on a honeymoon now with the lady, with classical music playing in the background!!

If this chick thinks that kids going on honeymoon with adults is progressive as long as no sex is involved, she needs to get out of her fantasy bubble and get a reality check.

You're kidding right? You think that showing a "young man" in love with an older woman is what makes this show progressive? He's a CHILD for god's sake. Not a "young man" as you said. A young man being in love with an older woman is fine and nothing wrong with that. An under-aged child, whether boy or girl being shown to go after an older woman is deplorable.

When a man reaches 21 he is not a child. He is ready to get married and vote. I said MAN. So why can he not fall in love? I said future... read my post before commenting. There is no romantic love between the boy and the girl now... not even close! See the show and then comment.

And for the record how many men marry women that are 10 years older than them? But many women marry men much much older than them and the society does not frown upon them.

No where is the child or the woman being risque. the kid hugs the girl and sleeps next to us. In India is there any law that states kids should sleep alone? We are not the west were a seperate bedroom is manadatory. There is more incests happening to little kids that are much much more serious offence than what is being shown in this show. And this show is not even showing anything other than using the theme of child marriage!! And child marriage still exists in India, so why not talk about it!!

Kids have crushes on their teachers at this age. The girl is being shown as a crush. See how indian shows treat child suicides eg. YHM!! Balika Vadhu is that not a child marriage story? Gulaal another child marriage story that was told beautifully.

Child marriage is not legal in India, it is considered legal in this story only because as a tradition it is valued. Unless they remarry after 21 their marriage is still not valid!!

But the way they hype the story with all this honeymoon and other things are very typical of how Indian shows have gone down the drain in the past few years. If they indeed ban this show, I would request them to brand the other crapfest that they show... especially the Saas abusing the Bahu... Tell me is that emotional physical abuse legal? Why is no one raising cudgels to that? That's a popular topic and trp aunties gobble it up like crazy! About time we got a censor board with Nihalani for Indian TV!! 😆😆

Why would a 9 year old child watch this show but not any other Indian TV show? Have you seen child rape being handled in India, we know how many rape cases happen here and how frequently. So that not even a new born child is left out. The rape capital of India is New Delhi.

What makes you think kids only watch this show and not the others? But there are loads of other serious issues that are being abused in TV, please take up those issues too and ban those shows too eg. Acid attack, stalking, child kidnapping, child depression, abuse and violence, children wielding guns, child suicide, surrogacy, celebrity swayamwar the list is endless If kids watch those shows then I am sure they are exposed to everyother show too. So, it would be better to Censor the entire Indian TV content, books, new channels and so on. As no show or media and SM is without its own pervertness and vileness.

All other shows should also go off air ASAP Period. Cause all shows are just crap dished out to people in the name of entertainment. Even books, news, publishing everything should be censored!!!

Yes, that's precisely what the logic is

Kids, kids and more kids...
Mannn...suddenly I feel like there are only kids left on this planet. All others have to move to Mars in order to enjoy fiction without moral policing that is full of hypocrisy.
