Reality shows aren't game changers: Rithvik Dhanjani

Actor-host Rithvik Dhanjani, who will be seen in the next season of Khatron Ke Khiladi, says reality shows are there just for entertainment.

Rithvik Dhanjani

The name Rithvik Dhanjani seems to have become synonymous with reality shows. He has hosted multiple, and has participated in four reality shows. As he heads to Spain for the next season of Khatron Ke Khiladi, he shares his thoughts about these kinds of shows.

He says, "I have hosted and participated in several dance shows, but I feel reality shows aren't game changers or path-breaking. I don't think reality shows affect an actor's career. If an actor is good at his craft, then nothing can change that or add to that and vice versa. They are just shows where one enjoys performing. There is nothing that changes in one's career after winning or losing a reality show. Sure, you get brownie points in terms of more fan following, more popularity but these shows are just for entertainment."

Rithvik enjoys reality shows as they give him the opportunities that he wouldn't have otherwise got as an actor.

He loves reality shows and after starting his career with Pavitra Rishta, he got "no other show that thrilled" him to sign it. It's then that his hosting career took off. "Being a host is a different challenge than being an actor. In any reality show, your mental strength is of prime importance. The reality shows I have been a contestant on have been life altering and given me enriching experiences, and I am proud of those experiences," adds the Yeh Hai Aashiqui actor.

Talking about his varied experiences on reality shows, he says, "Doing reality shows as a contestant changes your perspective and the way you think. All reality shows are as good as a college competition, where you prepare for it and the end of the day, the experience changes you. Name the reality show and I have been o it. People have told me that they feel reality shows are rigged, but I don't think any of them are scripted."

He will be away from Mumbai for more than six weeks for his next reality show while his girlfriend Asha Negi has gone to Australia for a shoot. He says he will miss her tremendously and "will have to surprise her" there.

TV is stuck in a vicious circle: Rithvik Dhanjani

TV actor Rithvik Dhanjanifeels once the viewers get used to a certain kind of shows, it becomes tough for the makers to experiment on television.

The 28-year-old actor says television appears to be stuck in a "vicious circle" of regressive serials.

"It's (television) a vicious circle. You had progressive shows at one point of time and people used to look upto them. But today the content is going regressive and that's because of the demand of the audience.

"They are fed with a certain kind of content and if the makers suddenly take the risk to experiment, it becomes difficult for them to get acceptance," Rithvik told PTI.

The actor hopes television will come up with better content and some shows have already started moving in the right direction.

"But I am hopeful it (television content) will take a turn and make a comeback with progressive content sooner or later. I think some shows are now liberal in nature," he says.

Rithvik, who starred in popular television shows "Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani" and "Kumkum Bhagya", says he has been away from the daily soaps as nothing "challenging" was offered to him.

"I was getting a lot of offers (for daily soaps) but there wasn't anything challenging enough for me to do. I also did not want to repeat myself. It's not that I won't do shows but the offer has to be worth doing," Rithvik says.

The actor has been part of several reality shows like "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa", "Nach Baliye", "I Can Do That" and "Dare 2 Dance".

"There is no formula for winning any show. One just has to be at ease and mentally stable," he adds.

Rithvik, who is an adventure junkie, will next be seen as a contestant on the eighth season of "Khatron Ke Khiladi".

"It's an interesting format and I had not done something like this before. It was offered to me twice but I couldn't do it due to some reasons. Now, I have the time so I jumped to do it," he says.
