The day stands for unity'
Five Bollywood actors talk about the significance of Republic Day, and tell us where they expect the country to head in the next decade
SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT
On the significance of Republic Day: The day reminds us that we have a government of laws, and not of men. So, instead of getting seduced by nepotism, in almost every sector, we need to start respecting deserving candidates. As Maximilien de Robespierre once said, "Wickedness is the root for despotism, as virtue is the essence of the Republic."
On where you see the Republic of India in the next decade or so: It's difficult to even imagine. Our democracy, I feel, will get digitalised and it's going to have a massive impact on our country. The ability of the Internet to aggregate opinions instantly is suited to the democratic process, which, at present, is only a power play taking place between a cast of thousands of people, advisors and lobbyists. Who knows, one day, Facebook likes' might legally be accepted as votes.
