As much as I do not like Kinari's character; I do not go to my guests and ask them to cook food when they come to my house. HOW RUDE! Savita asking Kinari to go into the kitchen and cook puris is so WRONG on so many levels. First when my guests come to the house they dress up and I have no desire to drench their clothes in oil or even washing up liquid. They are there to be served.

If the Deshmukh's want to do all the cooking themselves, they should not drag in others - even the DIL - to do this work. These people are NOT broke. If they want to have everyone cook at least get a sink that can contain the dishes (and by the way, if there is a sink, why are they going out of the house to get water - does this sink not have running water??)

Finally, if I have guests over, I make sure they are comfortable...if the Deshmukh's are anti air-conditioning, then at least they can cough up the Rupees and make sure their guests have A/C.

I am not sure what ridiculous message EK is sending to the people of India - running water and A/C are bad? If so, then she needs to give it up herself. Very hypocritical.

You are welcome to disagree with me, but I would appreciate if respondents would remain on topic and not use the thread to deviate to other unrelated issues. In fairness - and perhaps for your own benefit, start a new thread.

You are absolutely right. In my place, the first thing one does when a guest arrives at home is to make sure that they are comfortable. They are given the best room and are taken care of.

One other reason guests (unless they are so close to us that they are not exactly considered guests), are not sent into kitchens is the fact that they are given the time off. .They are guests for a reason. If they have to wash and make stuff, they may as well do it at their own place😆

Elders, especially those from two generations back will not want guests in the kitchen. For one, the guests have no idea about what is kept where and two, it is considered indecent. Say, there is less food available, the guests are supposed to be kept satisfied even if it means those in the house would partake a little less..

EK just touches these concepts with a romantic view. She does not know that it is not for those who live in palaces to comment on how difficult it is for those who live in the heat and sweat.

It is all very well saying that living in the chawl is wonderful.. It is another to actually have guts to show how difficult it is to be without power and water and walk miles for the same. She has an idea of this life in poverty in her head and having no actual experience, she is all for projecting poverty as something wonderful..

Thank you for your observations. I totally agree with everything you have written and am thankful to see that others can see through this romanticizing of poverty. Portraying the stress and hardships of poverty does not insult people...wishing to have running water and a/c IS what the people in the chawl want...just do a survey...how many of these women enjoy standing in line and lugging buckets back and forth? I sincerely doubt it.

EK has no idea of the hardships of these people - I've lived it - I've lived in India without a/c, I had cold running water that was fine in the hot weather, but the people around us had to carry buckets of water from the pump in our verandah. We cooked our own food, but even here in the US when I have a huge party, I might cook all the dishes but if I want to ease my stress, I will buy food.

Going to India now, I am not nostalgic for the hardships of that life...I want a/c and running water - if not I get sick. That's what would happen to Savita, and the entire team...and you'd think with all their cores they'd be living a better life..and still be humble.
