If all goes well, the original plot of the show will be adapted for big screen viewing, say sources.
Who does not know of Balaji Telefilms' Pavitra Rishta? Zee TV's long running prime time show, which started in 2009, made a mark for itself in the history of TV viewing. A TRP topper for two years straight when it started out, Pavitra Rishta has continued to rule the hearts of TV audiences even as it looks forward to complete 5 successful years in June 2014. The show gave us some of Telly's most memorable characters and acted as major platforms for the lead actors- while Sushant Singh Rajput, who played the large hearted and shy mechanic Manav Deshmukh graduated to the big screen, Ankita Lokhande who played the simple and sacrificing Archana Karanjkar became one of TV's biggest names and the face of Zee. The show also made stars out of the actors associated with it in the subsequent generations, prime amongst them being Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Negi, who went on to bag the Nach Baliye 6 Trophy this year.
And now, there are serious rumours that Ekta Kapoor is planning a big screen adaptation loosely based on the initial plot of Pavitra Rishta, which itself was based on a Tamil series named Thirumathi Selvam. Based on the story of a simple, not highly educated middle class girl who ends up getting married by a twist of fate to a poor mechanic, much against the dreams of her mother, Thirumathi Selvam too was a great success. Ekta now apparently plans to take this plot to the big screen, while retaining the Maharashtrian setting of the story which was present in Pavitra Rishta, though a Punjabi setting is also very much possible.
While Ekta refused to answer our queries on the same, a source from the production house confirmed that the project is very much on the cards, and Ekta has commissioned for the script to be re-written to make it suitable for big screen viewing. "She feels if Sooraj Barjatya's family films can get an audience, this love story cum family drama too has the potential to do well. A lot of the twists and turns which took place in the serial will be rewritten, but the core plot will be the same as in Pavitra Rishta and Thirumathi Selvam."
And what about the casting? "Casting shall begin only after the script is rewritten. Ekta might go with established faces or newcomers according to the demand of the story and the budget."
Woah! Now that is some revelation! In the past too, there have been TV shows which have been adapted for big screen viewing, like Office Office and the Khichdi series, but this is the first time such an adaptation is being planned by a mainstream production house and that too on such a lavish scale. Let's see where this one is headed!
