Shuddh Desi Style

Where Zanjeer set camp, Shuddh Desi Romance stays ensconced within it's context - Jaipur. The production house, Yash Raj Films, has legendary deep pockets and it's heartening to see it reach into them to invest in authenticity, rather than European destinations.

The clothes here speak both, the language of the state and the mental state of the wearer. The textiles and handicrafts of Rajasthan are abundant - leheriya saris and dupattas, shaded bandhini stoles, block printed cottons, silver jewellery, colourful pom-poms on the button plackets of kurtas, saris and lehengas have gota work. The subtle humour lies in Raghuram Sitaram (Sushant Singh Rajput). A wannabe and tourist guide with a Justin Beiber haircut and shirts patched out of cut pieces. His hair, shirts and talismans are a map of his psyche - a mass of unquestioned inherited and aped values which confuse him. As a baraati, he wears sickly pista-coloured shirts with machine embroidery, and the blazer has a preembroidered border stitched to the lapels. There are clinging talismans of his community - ear rings, a black thread with a deity pendant, copper kada and silver ring with a pearl on his little finger.

In contrast, self-assured Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) dresses decisively and functionally. She's a middle class working girl from all over India, and her clothes are modest, indigenous but flattering - duppatas as stoles, tunics over jeans or salwars, and tailored formal clothes. When she meets Raghu two weeks after his wedding, she's wearing a ring on a chain, perhaps something left behind or given by an ex. Her home is furnished for one - on the first night Raghu spends there, he rests his head on a stack of bed linen, not pillows. She is emotionally closed and defensive, but impulsive.

Then there's Tara (Vaani Kapoor), who is aware that most people don't see beyond her good looks. When she moves to Jaipur and poses as an air-hostess, she wears the skinny trousers and tucked in shirts expected of her tribe. This is what she aspired to be. When the gig is up, Tara turns to kurtis with jeans resigning to her true self. Tying them all together is Goel (Rishi Kapoor), a man wedded to weddings. His showy blazers could be tailored from bunting or upholstery brocade.

There is a conversation between Gayatri and Tara's clothes - two girls with strong, but not opposing personalities. Where the cigarette is Gayatri's crutch, the cold drink is Tara's. Gayatri has learnt to accept and embolden herself - her clothes are form-fitted, gaudy with embellishment and the colours are stronger, more pigmented. She has been fending for herself for a long time. Tara, has recently flown the coop and has still to come into her own - her fabrics are lighter, with fewer details, in softer colours and worn with delicate accessories. They are the choices of a girl who has been genderized.

Gayatri's taste in clothes will mature, but won't amp down in time; Tara could go on to wear crimson shift dresses in the future, and eventually Raghu will question the efficacy of his talismans one by one. Gayatri will probably be the one to point them out.

It makes more sense to give SDR more screens . It is so much in demand right now .
