I remembered you because the quality of your arguments, and your quiet, patient persistence, struck me, and stayed in my mind. Plus, I have, even in my present declining years, a fairly good memory!😉
I watched Episode 2 of Jodha Akbar last night, and Jodha was as lousy as ever, spouting, not nationalistic rhetoric, for Rajputana was not a nation, but the local equivalent thereof, and taking kasams to bring Jalal's head to the feet of Maa Kali. Rubbish, and she looks very strange trying to act impressive,
Next, the CVs do not know the difference between jauhar (en masse suicide by fire by all the womenfolk when their city is about to fall to the enemy, a highly emotive and ceremonial event), sati ( a woman committing suicide by burning herself on her husband's funeral pyre; outlawed in the the early 19th century and since disappeared), and plain and simple suicide by setting fire to oneself in despair, They called this last jauhar!
Next, Jodha's father, the king of Amer, who looks like a prosperous, paunchy kirana dukanwalla, rather than a royal personage, when he is ranting about Jalal's heartlessness, uses Urdu words like jahannum (instead of narak), and qayamat, which would never have been the case. But who are we to quibble about such trifles? But I thought back with nostalgia about the dignified and proud King of Amer in the film, played very well by Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
But your favourite was in top form as Jalal. His mirthless smile just before meting out punishment is terrifying, and in his interaction with a sardar of his, Sharifuddin (played, incidentally, by Vinod Karanjkar from PR!) he is all smooth menace. Clearly a lad of much promise, and at his 22 years, with a long career ahead of him. He has presence, and that is an intangible commodity that cannot be learnt; it is either there or it is not there, like charisma. He will hold his own even in this dismal production, I have no doubt of that.
As for Rajshri Thakur as the patrani in Maharana Pratap, I am with you completely, She looks every inch a queen. She has the face for it, and yes, the presence as well.
