Can the reel men please stand up?
Bade Achhe Lagte Hain

It's ironic! For a medium that primarily caters to women, most daily soaps on Hindi entertainment channels have one common thread -male leads who are wimps. Granted that the poor guys usually have precious little to do except show off their fab abs in tee shirts that are one size too small (if drool value is what you are looking for then the hero might even walk around in a singlet or a white vest or even a towel), kick some butt and beat the baddies troubling the leading lady or be there in dramatic confrontation sequences as a prop.

In 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?', a savvy self-made biz tycoon, Arnav Singh Raizada (Barun Sobti) gets kidnapped by his evil brother-in-law (played by Abhaas Mehta) and during an emotional scene, the villain humiliates the heroine, going to the extent of calling her a woman of low moral character and all he gets in return is a slap from the hero! In 'Kya Hua Tera Vaada', happily married woman and mom Mona ( Mona Singh) whose husband has moved on with a more glam girl flaunts a new baby bump and the errant hubby has to stand up for her virtue, by claiming the child is his!

In 'Pavitra Rishta', Manav Deshpande (Hiten Tejwani) still can't fight for his wife's rights and his first instinct is to avoid any sort of confrontation with his bossy mom. And the show completed three years of the same dilemma, -- the hero can't take a stand! In 'Saath Nibhana Saathiya', Ahem (Mohammed Nazim) isn't ready to have a baby and is giving a tough time to his docile and devoted wife Gopi (played by new replacement Devleena), while his in-command mom tries to sort out the situation.

In 'Mann Ke Awaaz Pratigya', another show that has been running for over two and half years, the male lead, Krishna (played by Arhan Behl) has always found himself or some family member behind the bars or in serious trouble and it's up to Pratigya (Pooja Gor) to save the day. In 'Balika Vadhu, Kachche Umar Ke Pakke Rishte', Jagya (played by Shashank Vyas) is not just a bigamist who reluctantly gives his first wife Anandi (played by Pratyusha Banerjee) divorce, he's also unwilling and unhappy at the prospect that his family loves her, and they are considering marrying her off again to a more suitable guy.

Suraj Rathi (played by Anas Rashid) in 'Diya Aur Baati Hum' is of course the official wimp, who's never raised a word of protest for any wrong done to his wife Sandhya (Deepika Singh). Ram Kapoor (Ram Kapoor) of 'Bade Achche Laggte Hai' is quick to suspect his wife Priya(Saakshi Tanwar) over his evil step ma and it takes other characters to make him realize her importance in his life, only by then it's too late.

In the tear-streaked world of daily soaps, men who don't behave the way they should nevertheless makes the audience sigh in delight. It's always nice to see screen characters, who have every material comfort still miss out on having a real man as the better half in the relationship..

that's the most pathetic episode ever of IPKKND..

that's true.. these heroes have nothing to do except flaunting their abs, walking in a thin T or better in a vest or bare. Oh yes, how can we forget, doing those romantic scenes with the heroines and ever so desperate sex crazed bed hoppers.. It has always been women who were humiliated and had to give their character certificate while evil villians walked away degrading them and the good for nothing heroes watched everything silently.. I hate to use this word but yes, all are official "wimps"

Thanks for sharing and I agree. We all get that TV caters more to women leads but what's with the wimpy male lead? Who actually likes men who are cowards? Ok, for that reason no one likes cowards be they men or women. Women on TV are shown often as doormats and sanskaari bahu types who sacrifice everything for their family. And when it's necessary for a man to also speak up, he just doesn't.

Thanks for the article Armu.

The issue is not that the male lead is not standing up for the Woman lead in the show. Its not in that sense alone they look like lame or like the ones they had written(wimps).
With whomever it might be ,Mom or wife or may be even sister or a Negative character, these Heros are not Heros , they doesn't stand up,as said they are reel there too.

In general their (the male Leads)characters are not so strong or made weaker in the context of showing something but sad thing is, even there, the CVs don't succeed.

Actually I was impressed with the two main male lead story or character and how they have written in the start. They had a strong impact and there was wonderful screen presence by the actors who portrayed it.

But its sad that they have been reduced to what they are Today.

The two were Manav of PR and Kunal of Praichay.

Both had their own faults but had been written with some realism. These two were not so perfect ones but the one who deserve to be Perfect and Happy. They with their own faults and Merits impressed me in the way their character is written.
And the actors who played it(Sushant and I think the other one is Sameer) was also brilliant in the way they showcased the character.

Ok, what to do, Thats what these Cvs end up with, they start with a good track of male lead to attract viewers, both the leads would be for real but later Cvs will degrade it with their own BS tracks.

Ok fine.But Have a Question,

When did Manav Deshmukh became Manav Deshpande...😕 ...

I think the characters in PR have a Love for this Name.

Sathis Joshi in earlier one, became Sathish Deshpande after sometime in serial I think.
Now its Manav turn???😕

Lord have mercy!!!!!!!!
When if can go from Satish Joshi to Satish Deshpande to phir Manav Deshmukh kaunse khet ki muli hai ji?😉 Manav Deshmukh became part of Deshpande family 😆 Its just a family name...In PR you drop family name or you get new one assigned 😛
Selective memory by not only EK, CVs and now the media-journalists too 😉😆
