'I can make anybody dance'

HARSHIKAA UDASI
Mansi Aggarwal

Political satire, offbeat track or item number, Bollywood's young choreographer Mansi Aggarwal has proved that she can handle any genre with ease

At 28, Mansi Aggarwal is arguably the youngest choreographer to hit Bollywood. Her 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' from Shanghai which has actors Emraan Hashmi and Pitobash dancing to some streetside moves, has created more news than the film itself. Making a non-dancer like Emraan dance shedding his inhibitions was not a challenge, she says.

"I like to work with raw dancers especially. You can get them to dance the way you envision." Mansi had given her actors their brief: keep it spunky and energetic right through the song. "When I was choreographing this song, the Ganpati festival was on in Mumbai and I was inspired by the way people dance during this season! I didn't choose any heavy steps and kept it in line with the character both were playing in the film. That's how I like to style my dances."

That's confidence speaking but if destiny in the garb of Anurag Kashyap wouldn't have come knocking twice at her doorstep, Mansi would have probably been a bureaucrat! "I was performing to a semi-classical song in Delhi on stage when Anurag spotted me and invited me over to choreograph this political satire song for his Gulal. I was running a dance institute in Delhi then," she says.

After Gulal was considerably delayed, Mansi was rather disillusioned. She had shut shop in Delhi to pursue this new opportunity. "I was good at academics and started preparing for the IAS exams," she says smiling, for that was not to be. Anurag came to her once more, this time with a proposal for Dev. D. The film took off and Mansi's choreography style got an identity. "I was ecstatic as bothDev. D and Gulal released in the same year!" she says.

Mansi has never looked back. She got an offer from Dibakar Bannerjee forShanghai which is now followed by Abhishek Kapoor's second film after Rock On!, Kai Po Che based on Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes Of My Life. "Kai Po Che has no choreographed sequences. There are three songs and each of them is like a montage. It is wonderful choreographing such pieces," she says.

But it's not just political satires or offbeat tracks that the girl is good at. She has styled an item number for an Indie film Wah Rasgulla and a romantic song for upcoming film Kaha Na Kisi Se too. Her favourite choreographed pieces in Bollywood are Lakshya's 'Main Aisa Kyun Hoon' (featuring Hrithik Roshan by Prabhudeva), Devdas' 'Dola Re Dola' (featuring Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit by Saroj Khan), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar's 'Pehla Nasha' (featuring Aamir Khan by Farah Khan) and all songs of Band Baaja Baaraat (featuring Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh by Vaibhavi Merchant). Asked if she would like to make any particular actor dance to her tunes, she says, "I can make anybody dance! "

Music takes Amit
Trivedi all over India

New Delhi: Composer
Amit Trivedi is literally going pan- India
with his music as his upcoming
films range from a period
romantic tale set in Bengal, a
feisty food film in Punjab to the
deserts of Rajasthan.
Trivedi has five yet-to-be-
released films in his kitty –
'Trishna', 'Lootera', 'Luv Shuv Tey
Chicken Khurana', 'Aaiya' and 'Kai Po Che'.
"I can say that I am going pan- India with my music. Very rarely
a music director gets such an opportunity to do such diverse films.
"'Trishna', the Michael
Winterbottom film starring Frieda
Pinto is set in Rajasthan. So the
music is earthy and I have used
many local instruments for the
music. In 'Lootera', which is a
period film in Bengal, I have
incorporated baul music and
rabindra sangeet," Trivedi said.
"'Kai Po Che' again has flavours
of Gujrat blended in a
contemporary way. The two
leading actors in "Aaiya" are from
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, so
the music also represents the
two states. 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken
Khurana' is a fun Punjabi film but
the music is not typically loud as I
have given it my own touch," he
added.
After working as a theater and
jingle composer, the 32-year-old
debuted as a film composer in
the 2008 film 'Aamir' and shot to
fame in the Hindi film music
scene with his critically acclaimed
work in Anurag Kashyap's 'Dev
D'.
The composer also lent his voice
to a song in Kashyap's recently-
released film 'Gangs of
Wasseypur', justifying his four-
year-old "very special
relationship" with the director as
he can never say no to him.
"Anurag is like family. He is my
big brother. I really enjoy
working with him because there
is a great sense of comfort and I
do get to work the way I want
to. For 'Gangs...' when Sneha
(Khanwalkar, the film's music
director) called me for the song, I
didn't even think before saying
yes," he said.
Trivedi, whose music was last
heard in 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' and
the much applauded
'Ishaqzaade', is known to bring
new singers to the fore and help
them attain playback glory in
Bollywood.
He also said that technology is a
boon for music composers as the
audience has become very
demanding and so there is a
constant need to introduce new
voices.
"Engineered voices are the need
of the hour. The audience wants
to listen to different voices. They
tend to get easily bored. So, we
have to go out and get people
who sound different. Often it
happens that they might have a
great textured voice but are not
necessarily great singers. That is
when technology comes in hand.
I don't consider it to be a bad
thing," he said.
Trivedi will feature in the second
season of Coke Studio, a platform
for independent, non-film music.
When asked about the reason
behind the decline in the non-
film music industry, the
composer blamed it on piracy
and the Internet.
"One of the main reason for the
decline of non-film music is
piracy and the Internet. Due to
this one can listen to music from
any part of the world without
having to pay for it. That is the
reason independent music has
been pushed back to an extent
that it has become completely
extinct.
"Nobody buys music anymore. I
have seen that so many music
stores have shut down. No
company wants to invest in
something like that. Everything
now boils down to Bollywood as
it is a full package," he added.

Dost dost na raha

Another friendship in Bollywood bites the dust. This time around the protagonists in the story are best-selling author Chetan Bhagat and director Abhishek Kapoor.

The Rock On!! director is currently shooting Kai Po Che! in Gujarat, based on Chetan's best-seller The 3 Mistakes of My Life. Both got along famously through the scripting process where Chetan was creatively involved. Once the shooting started in Gujarat, Chetan landed up on the sets. When he wasn't hanging out with the cast, that included television actors Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh, or schmoozing with Abhishek, Chetan got trigger-happy. The story goes that a few days after Chetan returned to Mumbai, Abhishek was heard abusing the writer on the phone. Apparently, he wasn't happy about the fact that Chetan had uploaded all the pictures on his Facebook page.

Last heard, Abhishek has warned Chetan to stay away from him and his film. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1120702/jsp/entertainment/story_15679956.jsp
