CHAPTER 3 KISMAT CONNECTION

Minni and Preet were returning to their home from the little adventure which they had done by sneaking in Neil's party. Preet was beaming continuously as she was happy she saw many celebs there while Minni was all lost. She was trying to get out of the shock she had when she saw Neil Oberoi. She was having a strange and unknown feeling since then, her heart was racing like a Ferrari and she was confused that whether this feeling is due to the fact that she was nearly caught and probably could have been sent to jail or due the proximity of Neil. The way he was looking at her, the way he was holding her, Neil Oberoi, a man who is every girl's dream was this close to her…she got goosebumps remembering those moments again. Minni had not told anything to Preet about her little meeting as she knew her sister is a crazy fan of Neil and most probably she would irritate her asking millions of questions.

Both the sisters were in their own world, they came out of their trance when taxi driver applied break on reaching their chawl. As they proceeded towards their home they noticed some noises coming from inside. They hurriedly open the door of the house and were shocked to see that Ashok, their criminal father was back from jail and he and Babita were having a fight as usual. Suddenly he became violent and raised his hand to slap Babita when Minni stopped him in between.

"Papa, what are you doing? Don't dare to touch my mumma." Minni said in warning.

"And how dare you talk to me like that. I am your father and where you have been with your sister at this late hour?" Ashok jerked her hand away and instead questioned her back about her whereabouts.

Minni moved backward as she got a whiff of alcohol from Ashok, "Why do you care where were we? You are not here to take care of us when we need you then why you want to know about us?

Ashok once again moved towards Babita and caught her by her hair in anger, "Tell your ill mannered daughter nobody talks to me like that." He made his grip tight on her hair making her scream with pain.

"Actually you are responsible for all this. I always wanted a son but you gave me these two unlucky daughters and because of their bad luck only I am in this condition today." Ashok said with gritted teeth as he pushed Babita away.

Meanwhile Preet had ran and bring Naeem bi and few more chawl residents with her for support. After a little struggle they were succeeded in dragging Ashok out of the house.

"How many times I have to tell you Babita, why don't you just get rid of this man legally….just divorce him." Naeem bi asked getting frustrated as this was not the first time Ashok had created scene in their chawl.

"Exactly maa, why you always let him come back in your life, your house everytime?" Preet supported Naeem bi views.

Babita tried to brush off the issue like always, "Just let it be, how does it matter, he rarely comes here cause he either spent his time in jail or in drinking and gambling.

"But then also mumma, why do you let him destroy our peaceful life? Why you don't leave him?" Minni argued this time.

Babita kept her hands on Minni's shoulder to pacify her. She shared her old views on this matter, "Because doesnt matter how bad he is as a person but everyone knows here that he is your father, my husband, that there is a man in this house. Otherwise a family consisting of female members, without the man of the house, is just like a house without a rooftop. Everyone tries to take advantage, interfere, fool us."

"Oye tu kis sadi mein jee rahi hai Babita? You and your daughters are independent, you guys dont need anyone's support." Naeem bi reasoned.

"I have seen that struggle Naeem bi. When I came here from our home town in Punjab, no one was ready to give a house to a single mother. That time I realized that I will need to tolerate Ashok to raise my daughters. And more importantly, no matter how bad husband he is, the truth is that he has given me the reason of my existence in the form of two lovely daughters and this is enough reason for me to tolerate his nonsense." Babita shared her opinion.

Finally all accepted defeat and went to sleep as they knew however practical and logical their views are but they can't deter Babita from her decision.

Next day Neil was on his film set. He was shooting for his unnamed film with Isha kapoor. The shot was ready. It was a romantic scene. As soon as the director said "action", Neil started saying his dialogue- "

"Tumne kabhi apni ankhen dekhi hai…ek ajeeb si kashish hai inme…jaise mujhe apni taraf kheech rahi ho..." Neil closed his eyes for a while and last night party's scene when he was holding Minni, flashed before him. When he opened his eyes again he hallucinated Minni in place of Isha. He continued his dialogue, "....you don't know how much I want you Minni".

Director shouted in the middle, " Cut it",

Neil came out from his trance at director's voice and saw he was holding Isha. He pushed her away instantly.

Isha asked while raising her eyebrow, "Neil, sweetheart what are you doing? Never seen you making mistakes in the dialogues. My name is Meera in this film not Minni.

"Yes, Neil ji, thats why I cut the scene." Director also explained.

Neil was shocked for sometime as to how come he took that girl's name in the middle of his dialogue and what is happening with him why he suddenly remembered that girl. But Neil didn't show it to others because of his attitude. He was too proud to accept his mistakes., "What the name is Meera….so what? I didnt like it. I like Minni more….change the name director…Neil Oberoi won't change his dialogue."

Director pleaded, "But sir, we have already shot some scenes with this name."

Neil gave a deadly glare to him, "Then shoot it again but my decision is final…the name will be Minni from now onwards." After that Neil went to his vanity van leaving all of them confused as why all of a sudden he wanted to change the name but nobody dared to ask him. Whatever Neil Oberoi said, was the final words on sets.

Preet was too excited to give her audition for a big budget film of famous director named Vishal Chopra. Although Naeem bi was accompanying her but she insisted Minni also to come with her for moral support. All the three went to the audition venue.

As soon as Preet entered the premises she started feeling nervous. When she saw many other beautiful girls sitting there and practicing their dialogue she lost her confidence. Naeem bi tried her level best to pacify her and boost up her confidence but to no avail.

At last Preet's chance came and she proceeded in front of camera to say her dialogue. She started-

"Zindagi sabko ek hi chance deti hai, aur ye humare upar hai ki hum uss…" She suddenly forgot the dialogues and started stammering. "...ye hamare...hamare upar hai ki...ki..."

The person behind the camera lost his patience and shouted "Ye kya madam…acting karni nahi aati toh hamara time kharab karne kyu aa gaye, jao yahan se abhi bahut ladkiyo ka audition lena hai"

Naeem bi tried to convince him, "Sir, give her one more chance. She is very good actress. Bachhi bas thoda sa nervous ho gayi hai."

"Hamare pass faltu time nahi hai." the man rejected.

Minni also requested now, "Sir, my sister is very good at acting…she is just nervous…please one last chance.

That man finally agreed. "Fine one last chance to this girl".

Preet was biting her nails now, "Naeem bi, Minni, I keep forgetting this dialogue." she shared her problem.

Minni encouraged her, "Preet Kaure, its very simple. Ab to mujhe bhi yaad ho gaya hai bar bar sunke. Listen carefully it goes like this - 'zindagi sabko ek hi chance deti hai aur ye humare upar hai ki hum uss mauke ko na gavaye. kya pata phir zindagi hum par meharbaan ho na ho, kya pata phir kismat hume us mod par dobara laaye ya na laaye." She actually said it with all the expression to make it easier for Preet to understand it completely.

Nobody noticed that while all this drama was going on camera was still rolling, it recorded all that happened there with Preet. Finally Preet gave her audition and came back with Naeem bi while Minni went to the sets of another film where she was currently working as background dancer.

Neil was resting in his vanity van, thinking about the incidence where he took Minni's name. His eyes were closed while his hands were placed on the arm rest of chair. He wondered what happened to him few moments ago? Why he is thinking so much about that girl? This has never happened with him before. There was something magical about that girl. Her presence was enough to hold anyone's gaze. If she had been in showbiz then she would have been top most heroine.

When he was done thinking, he opened his eyes feeling frustrated when he didnt have any answers and to his utter shock the same girl was there in front of him.

He moved towards her but she moved back. She had those same fearful expression on her face which she had last night.

"Hey don't be afraid. You are Minni…right? How come you are here?...forget this…tell me what you were doing in my party….forget this…..tell me who are you and where do you live?" Neil asked all the questions that were troubling him.

But before he could get any answers suddenly the knock at the door of van caught his attention he turned and found a spot boy who had came to inform him that the next shot was ready. Neil turned again to talk to Minni but that girl was not there anymore.

"F**k! Not again Neil. Control yourself and your imagination...at this rate you will become mad soon" He chuckled and went to give the take.

Some days passed like this and Neil almost forgot about that mysterious girl. Minni was also busy in her little world having no idea that she has left an impact on the super star Neil Oberoi, so much so that he was hallucinating about her.

Minni entered her house only to find that Preet was crying uncontrollably and both Naeem bi and Babita were consoling her. She immediately rushed to Preet.

"What happened Preet kaure? Why are you crying?" Minni asked in concern.

"Wo...Minni...us din wo audition..." Preet sobbed.

Minni guessed the reason behind her sadness, "Oh! you are not selected for that role?"

Preet just shook her head in denial while crying. But Naeem bi answered on her behalf, "Minni that auditions means nothing now. The film for which it was organized has been dumped in the dustbin."

Minni showed sympathy, "What film cancelled but how can they do that?"

Naeem bi gave her a annoyed look, "Oh come on, as if you know nothing about film industry. Everyday several films are announced here but its not compulsory that all of them are completed and released in theaters. Some of them remain mere announcement or some of them remain incomplete due to several issues between the producers.

Minni tried to cheer up Preet, "Naeem bi is right. Shayad iss baar kismat tumhare saath nahi thi but that does not mean that no more films will be made in bollywood. Many more films will come and many more chances will also come for you so just cheer up.

Finally after lots of persuasion they were successful in cheering up Preet and convinced her that may be destiny was not with her this time but little did they know destiny was playing its own game in which everyone was just a puppet of its hand and their lives were about to change drastically.

Later that day at Vishal Chopra, the famous young director, also Neil's friend was sitting in his office watching the tapes of auditions which he organized for his film though that film was cancelled now but he was looking the tapes in hope of finding new talent whom he can use in his other ongoing films in some important roles. Right then Neil came to his office.

"Hey buddy! How are you? What are you doing?" Neil greeted Vishal.

Vishal smiled at him, "Nothing much, you tell me, aaj hamari yaad kaise aa gayi?"

"You know na I have announced a new film named "ek ishq ek junoon" under my production house so I wanted a young director with fresh perspective to direct this film. You know I have a hunch that this movie will be a blockbuster hit. I am personally involved in it from story writing to screenplay. You can say its my baby and I want the best for it. So I was thinking, would you like to be its director…what say?

Vishal smiled at Neil's enthusiasm. Despite the fact that he was super star and producers, directors shared stories of his tantrums, he was very committed to his work. He liked Neil's passion for his work and if he was saying that movie was going to be a blockbuster then it will be. Neil understood the pulse of this industry very well. So he finally answered him, "Can anybody ever say no to Neil Oberoi? Of course I will do it."

"Ok then, I want to introduce a new face in that film. So we will organize an audition for it very soon." Neil shared his plans.

"Hey! why don't you have a look at these tapes. Actually I organized an audition for a film but later I decided to drop that idea. I was just going through these tapes so that if anybody is worth giving a chance I could use them in other films." Vishal suggested.

"Ok, if you say so. Lets have a look." Neil agreed.

They saw many girls audition but were not impressed until now then they came across Preet's audition. As soon as Neil saw that video his eyes just stick to one person ie Minni who was standing alongside Preet. He couldnt believe he was seeing that same girl again. On the other hand Vishal was watching it with confusion.

Vishal frowned at the video, "Looks like camera man forget to stop recording while this girl's relatives were cheering her up."

Neil smiled, "Yeah and I am grateful to him for this…or else how could I have found her."

"What? Find whom?" Vishal asked.

"Heroine of my film." Neil answered as he played back the video again. He couldnt believe just few days back he was thinking that Minni had strong presence, she could be next rising star and now he found her audition tape. Destiny really wants him to find her.

Vishal was shocked, "What! This girl? Whats her name?" Vishal rewinded the tape to check her name "Ya…some Preet…oh come on Neil…look at her…she is low on confidence…can't say just a simple dialogue." Vishal shared his views.

Neil moved closer to the screen and paused the video, "I am not talking about this girl" He pointed at Preet, "I am talking about her" now he pointed at Minni.

"But this girl seems just this Preet's relative or friend. She has not given audition formally." Vishal argued.

Neil, who was already blown away by Minni's beauty was also impressed now with her dialogue delivery and expressions. The little dialogue which she said to help Preet was enough for Neil to recognize the hidden potential of acting in Minni. He had already made his mind that now only Minni will be his heroine. And once Neil made a decision, it was nearly impossible to change it.

So he said with determination to confused looking Vishal "I have made my decision. You trust my judgment na? People don't call me star maker just like that. I know this girl will become a big star one day. Only she will be my heroine."

Vishal accepted defeat as he knew any argument with Neil Oberoi will be waste of time as nobody dares to open his mouth against him, "Ok fine, if you feel so Neil. I will contact this girl."

Neil smiled looking at paused video once again and wondered "there is some connection between us…aakhir kismat ne hume phir se milwa hi diya".
