Basic Lesson- 1A

Main- Main

Tum ' Toon

Mera- Mera

Tumhara- Tera

Aapka- Thoada

Hamara- Saada

Apko- Tuhanu, Thoanu

Log- Lok

Aankh- Aakh

Tujhe- Tainu

Mujhe -Mainu

Main Aapko pasand karta hoon.

P- Main Tuhanoo pasanad karda haan.

Aap Kaise Ho.

P- Tusi Kiddan Ho.

Here is one thing to be noted. Punjabi is spoken a little differently than written. There are many dialects of Punjabi language according to the different regions. The Greater Punjab which includes : Delhi, Eastern Punjab, Western Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, there are many dialects. Also there is a language called Dogri, which is Pahadi Punjabi, spoken in Himachal Pradesh, J&K. But the standard written Punjabi includes Majhi Punjabi.

In Indian Punjab- The main dialects are (though there are many dialects, but to keep things simple, I will mention only three dialects): Majhi in Majha region includes districts like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Doabi in Doaba region includes Jalandhar, Nawan Shehar, Phagwada etc. and Malwai in Malwa region includes Ludhiana, Bathinda, Ferozpur etc (Me from Malwa😃)

But here we would try teach a neutralized Punjabi, which is spoken in the urban areas of Punjab. Please Bhul Chuk maaf kariyo kyonki saanu dovaan nu aini changi tarah Punjabi sikhaoni nahi aaondi. 😃 Par asin koshish zaroor karange.

You guys are teaching the non - punjabi speakers and not the ones who already speak the language -
None of us are teachers here - we all are trying our best to do so . So just bring it on and don't be too modest- 😃

I have learnt lot of Punjabi words today and now really looking forward to learning sentences 😛. After getting married, I even learnt how to read and write Punjabi and already understand it well, the only problem I still have is with speaking😔. I really want to learn the full sentences so I can start conversing in Punjabi even If it's broken Punajbi😳

BTW Minnie, how do I say "I missed you a lot" in Punjabi?

Lesson-2

In Punjabi, some words are pronounced differently, you all must have heard people talking in Punjabi in movies etc, and noted that some words even though written same as Hindi, but are pronounced differently. A few examples of such words can be seen in below sentences:

Kaun Bol Raha hai
P- Kaun (Kaun is spoken differently than in hindi, it's like how Pani is spoken differently in Punjabi than Hindi, in both cases Pani and Kaun, it is Kaunh, Panhi) Bol Reha hai

Mere pass Kucch hai.

P- Mere kol Kujh hai.

Bharat ka sab se purana Granth Rigveda Punjab ki Dharti pe likha gya tha.

P- Bharat (again Bh spoken different like Pani and Kaun) da sab ton purana Granth Rigveda Punjab di dharti (Dh is again a case like Nh, Bh here) te likhya gya see.

Mujhe iss baat ki samajh nahi aati.

P- Mainu iss gall di samajh (Jh is a case like Dh, Nh, Bh) nahi aaondi.

Meri Behen Bahut Sundar hai.

P- Meri Bhain Bahut Sohni hai.

A few other simple examples:

Yeh bahut kadwa hai.

P- Eh bahut kauda hai.

Punjab mein iss waqat bahut garmi pad rahi hai.

P- Punjab vich iss waqat bahut garmi pai rahi hai.

Bahar Baarish Pad Rahi Hai

P- Bahar Meenh (Varkha) Pai Reha Hai.

Punjabi Girls in Traditional Giddha Clothes. Traditional Giddha Clothing includes Salwar Suit, or Ghagra, Parandi (in hair), Saggi Full ( in Hair), Wangan, Churian (Bangles) etc.

  • The word Punjab means Five Rivers. But after independence, Both Punjabs are left with 2 and half parts of those 5 rivers.
