I beg to differ, I found the scene lacking.
Much as I appreciate the parallel drawn between Keerti & Siddhi, what came across was an insecure, terrified & yes "screechy" Keerti, not Siddhi. The lack of confidence, "butterflies in stomach" et al. had little to do with the scripting &/or execution of the scene & were more, a manifestation of Keerti's insecurities as an actress.
I don't think she was screechy at all. A trifle rushed in her dialogue delivery but that's all. Whether her performance was a manifestation of Keerti's insecurities or not, we can never be entirely sure. I thought of that, but if that were the case is it not the director's fault that he let that be seen on screen? I mean if he wanted it any other way, he should have retaken the shot. Perhaps that is what he was looking for.
Indianised dramas that call for histrionics, appear not to be Keerti's forte, she has been far more effective in portraying a quiet, dignified strength & reserve that befits her soft & demure, yet straightforward persona, just like in the pagphera scene, which she handled quite efficiently.
Well why should we settle for histrionics? Why can we not appreciate if a drama is being handled a different way? Why can we not always appreciate the dignified persona?
Nevertheless, it would be unfair to put all the blame on Keerti's young shoulders, given her lack of experience, she did the best she could, with the OTT brief she was given. Unfortunately, our courtroom dramas are still embedded in the 1980s, wherein lawyers are expected to scream & contort their facial muscles in the most unflattering manner & harass their witnesses to get to the truth. Keerti as Siddhi, was expected to do the same & the results were IMO... not satisfactory.
The same scene could have been delivered with a lot more pizazz, had it been enacted, "Siddhi style", with a calm but steely tenacity, without the need for loud, rapidly mouthed dialogues that sent diction to the blazes & resulted in reducing her to a caricature of a lawyer.
The weakness lies not so much in Keerti's acting abilities , as it does in the director's failure to recognize & capitalize on her strengths.
Why should our courtroom dramas be embedded in the 1980s? Why should muscles twitch and lawyers scream? I agree her dialogue delivery is not the best, but she still came off as calm and tenacious, if a little diffident. Which seemed real. If I had seen a supremely confident Siddhi that would have been a character flip flop for me which would have been unbelievable. Really? A young lawyer up against the best in the country and not being nervous. I don't buy it. You can have all your arguments ready, but not knowing what the other person is going to throw your way can make the best of people sweat a lot!
Needless to say, it was Siddhi's day out in the sun, since the scene was scripted to make her come out "smelling of roses"
