at first I was intrigued that they would show a surrogacy track on Indian television. Trust Ekta to try stuff outside the box. But trust Ekta, too, to make a complete mess of it!
So I can accept that Ahana and her husband have gone through an IVF cycle and they have frozen embryo(s).
But then Naina just waltzes into the hospital and walks out pregnant?!
1. Firstly, would the proposed surrogate not have to go through some psychological analysis to determine fit?
2. There are so many legalities around "renting your womb" and not even one lawyer involved? AND without the consent/involvement of the father?! PLUS the surrogate candidate is married so what about consent from HER husband?
3. No physical prep: you can't just have one check up and get a call saying " today's the day". The woman's cycle has to be monitored and hormone injections need to be taken to prepare the womb.
4. It's called TRANSFERING the embryo, not IMPLANTING. Implanting happens when e embryo sticks and becomes pregnancy becomes viable.
5. There's no guarantee that the very first embryo will stick. In fact, most women have to go through a couple (sometimes more!) of transfers before there's a pregnancy.
You might wonder why I'm picky about all of this. After all it's television and entertainment. The thing is I believe if you want to show something different, do it properly with correct information. The viewers have different levels of exposure and awareness so you don't know what they will take away as fact and fiction.
This show is supossedly set in Austria. I expect a European standard of interaction. They could have brought this track to India and done it more "loosely".
I've gone through IVF personally, as have millions of women everywhere. Don't undermine what we have gone through by making it seem like a walk in the park.
