Suman has been negative from day one, representative of a generational conflict of many households across India. Familial toxicity, conflict, peer pressure, emotional infidelity, crankiness, crazy marriages are all realities in different strata of society.
Men, in most households, deflect unreasonable demands from their mothers to maintain peace. Rarely again mein Khade ho Kar Kuch bhi stand leta hai.
In short, my problem with PS is the non-closure of tracks and not the storyline at all! What I would have wanted to see were conflict based soliloquies to delve deeper into each character. I don’t care for morals in fiction. Moral ambiguity, subversive characters etc., add spice to narratives. The challenge here it’s a loud conflict rather than a subtle one. Hence, the angst. It’s like you enjoy watching a Beena Tripathi and her sense of agency over her life, but it has a substantial subversive moral ambiguity.
The problem again with PS is that they glorify the family as an ideal one, whereas they are simply dysfunctional like any other neighbourhood home.
Okay, I shall give you a neutral opinion. In fiction, we look forward to escaping from reality. We want a hero who cares for women. Who stands for rights, whereas in real life, nothing like that happens. Husband wife rarely has conversations if you share the equation like Shivi.
We all seek validation. Raavi had a trigger point for Shiva. She rejected him badly every time. It doesn’t mean Shiva wasn’t at fault! His character is Bail Buddhi. Brick headed. He has always been like a volcano, unreasonable, and a person whose emotional acumen often clouds his judgement. He was a violent child with Maami too.
So whatever he does isn’t out of the blue because he is a sinister character, and so is Raavi. If genders are reversed, a gender ambiguity shall have completely changed narratives.
Does that absolve and defend him? No
Does that make Raavi a culprit? No
Do they deserve better than each other? Yes, ideally
But, do ideal relationships exist so commonly in real life. A relationship like Shivi isn’t a work in progress. It’s either you are there or not!
There’s always a reason why a character behaves a certain way. No one glorifies Shiva in the family except the enabler of patriarchy in the form of Suman.
Everyone either hits him madly, screams at him or criticises him equally.
Raavi and her Dobiness, her lack of agency is again a conflict of most girls from Tier 2, 3 cities. Various anthropology dipstick surveys represent that too!
Monogamy is highly overrated. In real life, subconsciously, you’d see people often clueless, passive or often confuse validation with solace. It’s a quagmire of what needs to be done, what goes behind their brains and the circumstances. Sometimes, people become delusional and have no sense of rhyme and reason.
The problem again with ITV is a skewed approach of black and white characters, which have been shoved down our throats over time. It makes most of the shows caricaturist and the problematic representation of gender-biased narratives.
In short, all characters remain true to their colours. There has been some growth, some stunted shortfalls, but overall it’s an enjoyable show.
There would be days, they’d trigger my angst against something, but I watch it from a distance and laugh at their Kaands.
