Great thoughts, I literally agree with everything you have said. And no, despite how frustrated I am with Dev, I would never throw chappals at you. You all are my friends who, unfortunately, have to deal with my personality/rants. But here's what I can offer to the table:
Regarding GauRa, I'm not too sure what Gautam's age was when he took up the store, but I'm sure he had to make a ton of sacrifices to ensure his family is well-taken care of. He lost his carefree youth as a child after his father's death, and stepped up to be the "man" of the house in just a few short months/years. Meanwhile, Dhara put the family's happiness over her own. GauRa definitely could've started their family, but Dhara knew that if she had a child, these brothers might not achieve their dreams (especially since they were also in a financial crunch). And in terms of their marriage, despite being friends before, it kind of does stink to marry on those terms when you least expect it. Not all friends can become attracted to each other on a deeper level, so I am happy it worked out for GauRa!
Coming to Shiva, I know this is ITV and there are probably some gaps, but I am very, very interested in knowing about his background. As you have mentioned, "gawar" hits a sore spot for him. He hasn't been affected by anything as much as he has been affected by "gawar," making me think he's always valued education/studies ever since having the conversation with Dhara. I want to know if this show will follow the path of the original (him discontinuing his dreams of becoming a collector) or whether they will take a new spin on the tale especially since GauRa emphasized his education. I find it hard to believe they would let him discontinue his dreams as I would assume they would be even more self-sacrificing to allow Shiva to pursue his goals.
Plus, another area I am confused by is the reason everyone calls him "gawar." Don't you about you all, but my parents used to constantly talk about my grades. It always seems to be the first question asked at any gathering, "How are your kids doing at school?" Though I live in America, I figure India would be the same. I find it hard to believe that no one knew about Shiva's academic performance (especially if he was doing good and then dropped out to help GauRa). My thoughts are that he was initially doing good, but saw how much Gaumbi and Dhara had to sacrifice for the family and felt guilty that he couldn't help them out. So, he began to willingly slack off in his studies, telling no one, and making everyone assume he is not as educated or smart as he wouldn't have had the long-standing track record of good grades. Perhaps Gaumbi figures him out, and that's when Shiva confesses what he's done, and even if Gaumbi wanted him to go to higher studies, it was too late as Shiva's exam scores are not that good? I don't know, that's just a thought that crossed my mind.
Now when it comes to Rishita's character, I think we all agree that she's not the greatest of characters. She appears to be "obsessive" over her husband, and doesn't even like it if another woman speaks to him, even if that woman is his bhabi. To play devil's advocate, Rishita most likely grew up like a princess. More than anything, I think her father gave her all types of material possessions, while Dev gave her some hope of long-lasting romance and a happily ever after. As for how she could not know how much the Pandya family means to Dev, I think she was under the illusion that once they married, she would just automatically mean more to him as she is his biwi. Maybe even now, she is convinced she can change Dev, which is why she acts the way she does. It'll be hard for her to overnight hate her maiden family, but I think she'll slowly understand her place in the Pandya family. Right now, everyone is tense and is more worried about ShiVi, making her more annoyed (which I can kind of understand as she never lived with a larger family, the only competition for attention she would've ever had is with her sister, who she already loves. It's so much harder to love people you've barely known).
I think once she realizes Raavi doesn't care for Dev, it'll be the turning point in her character. The girl is in desperate need for companionship. Her insecurity with Dhara probably stems from how much Dev has hyped Dhara. She knows she'll never be as self-sacrificing, so she doesn't even want to hear it. I think Raavi will be the voice of reason for her. Raavi is kind and bubbly, but I wouldn't say she is as self-sacrificing as Dhara (not yet, at least), so I think she'll be a good middle ground. Once those two become friends, I think Rishita will be a lot more willing to partake in family activities. Rishita herself is an interesting character. Unlike the other members of the family, she knows how to fight for her dreams, and I think this family needs to learn that it's alright to be selfish sometimes, even if the other person is not happy about it.
Now coming to Dev. Most of my anger stems from his most recent actions especially regarding his own decisions. Even during the wedding I was like, "It'll be alright, he'll apologize to everyone," and we could go back to seeing the Dev we all know and love. But he just didn't. He's non-confrontational and a good guy, but that doesn't mean an apology would lead to a big fight. Shiva is definitely not someone who would beat him up if he apologized, so I wish he understood that his family is there to support him. Even his conversation with Dhara, he's best friends with her! As told by Gaumbi. Why couldn't he have told Dhara privately the second this was arranged? That everyone had it all wrong? Now, coming to the other side of his personality, I did like him more when he was confrontational with those goons. It shows that he really cares for his brothers and would even risk his own personal health for them, which I really do appreciate. And I also like when he stood up for Shiva after the kidnapping scene. Telling Raavi in all his years of knowing Shiva, Shiva would never leave anyone at danger's bay, even if it's his enemy.
But love to me is more than just willing to fight or stand up for your family/close ones when others insult/bully them. Love to me is doing that and recognizing when your family is in pain. Dev recognized that his decisions hurt GauRa, and he apologized for that, which I appreciate. But, he isn't really recognizing Shiva's pain, and that's where I find troubles being sympathetic to him. All other characters in the show have commented on Shiva (Dhara, Gaumbi, Suman, Krish, I think even Hardik when he came for tea). But as a brother, he thought a simple hug would change everything. I wish he realized having a heart-to-heart conversation, just to get a sense of what Shiva thought, was better.
You're right, Dev is not spineless. He's a little bit more of a worry-wort while Shiva is more confrontational. Most of the anger the audience has on him is probably related to the disconnect/disjointed scenes DevTa have had so far.
But I'll stop now since this has become too long 😆
