Zebaish will go on air after Eid 2020:

My main motive to write Zebaish was that I am tired of these Saas-Bahu stories: Bushra Ansari

Bushra Ansari and Asma Abbasi have given fans some pretty epic team-ups over the years.

Their journey together began with Hum TV’s “Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley” and reached ultimate popularity when they featured in the coolest rap song ever ‘Humsaye Maa Jaye’ to promote Indo-Pak peace. They were magnificent, united again as sisters for Deewar-e-Shab! But if you thought you had seen the much-loved sibling pair at their best in the periodic play, you were clearly wrong!

The visionary duo has greater glory destined for them and we will be seeing them together yet again in the upcoming Hum TV drama ‘Zebaish’.

Written by Bushra Ansari herself and directed by Iqbal Hussain of Deewar-e-Shab fame, the drama is slated to be aired on our screens after Eid 2020. However, the behind-the-scene glimpses have already created ample hype and hoopla about the project.

Mostly, it is the candid shots of the real-life pair Zara Noor Abbas and Asad Siddiqui, both playing major roles in the story, which has made Zebaish a drama everybody is looking out for.

An Old Squad Returning With a Fresh Story

The main team and the top female cast is almost the same as that of Deewar-e-Shab. What’s more similar is that Bushra and Asma will be seen bonding as sisters on our screen all over again!

So what’s different about Zebaish? Will it have a fresh feel with the combined chemistry of Bushra Ansari, Asma Abbas, and Zara Noor Abbas?

We decided to have a chat with the delightful sisters to dish about their upcoming drama and the idea of collaborating again.

What was your vision while penning down Zebaish? How different it is from your earlier works?

My main motive to write Zebaish was that I am tired of these Saas-Bahu dramas. I feel the audience wants to see content beyond this. It is a multi-track story. But it is not your typical saas-bahu or wives-quarreling-with-each-other saga. It is a drama with multiple twists and turns.

As a writer, my intention was to give a good script with a good storyline. While I cannot disclose the story, I can assure it’s not a clichéd tale. It is devoid of the usual ‘zulm-on-bahu’ plot. I have reservations from such stories and now seldom pen them. However, I hope the drama clicks with the audience and I have tried my best to write something different this time around.

Tell us something about Zebaish and the character you play in it.

Asma Abbas: Zebaish will be a very different drama and is poles apart from the routine ‘Saas-Bahu’ plays. It also has a challenging, yet interesting storyline. I believe if an artist gets an opportunity to work in such a diverse story in a year, it is enough for him or her. My role in it is of an old actress who was not in mainstream entertainment but was a dancer. She gets married to a son of a ‘Peerzada’ but leads a very harsh marital life as she is not accepted and respected in the household.

Friends Like Family

Both of your sisters together on-screen always create excitement. What new equation you both will portray in Zebaish, given that you are also seen as sisters in Deewar e Shab?

Bushra Ansari: I think this is our third venture together. She also played my sister’s role in an earlier play that I wrote “Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley”. In Deewar e Shab, she is also my sister. But in Zebaish, Asma is not my real sister but in fact, plays the role of my ‘muh-boliBehn’ who used to be once my very close friend.

It is very different this time and our relationship has a lot of dimensions in the drama. Asma’s past is very shady in Zebaish and her present is associated with a spiritual family where she gets married into. Later, she lives with me. I think I have developed interesting tracks for everyone. All the characters have catchy stories and have a variety of shades.

Asma Abbas: This is my third play with BushraAapa. My first work with her was “Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley”, in which I featured in seven episodes. The second was Deewar e Shab and Zebaish will be the third one.

We will be in more prominent roles in this drama and will play the characters of ‘muh-bolibehn’. We sport amazing chemistry as we sisters are totally similar to each other. But she is elder to me and a senior actress. So she helps me to improve. Especially in regards to make-up, she makes sure my hair, my eyes and my overall look is flawless while complaining to the make-up artist that my sister should look perfect.

She immensely appreciates my work but if ever I make a slight issue in speaking Urdu, she corrects me while helping me to make the tone and speech better. She is the writer so she knows these things best. Our welcoming chemistry will also be evident to the audience as they see drama.

The comeback of the Lollywood hero Babar Ali

Babar Ali is also making his comeback in Zebaish. How has your experience been working with him?

Bushra Ansari: Babar Ali has a worthwhile comeback in this play. And he will be appearing very pleasant in his character, being back on the screen after a long time. Babar has been a good co-actor to work with and has an amazing personality.

I have worked with him for the first time because he was mainly associated with the world of movies in Lahore. In the drama, he is playing the role of my second, younger husband, Pervaiz. There is also a striking change in his avatar that we have depicted on-screen with his grey beard and a graceful look. He is younger than me and we needed a relatively younger hero. He turned out to be a great choice and I loved working with him.

Asma Abbas: I had earlier seen Babar Ali’s acting in movies. But his work earlier was very different and this drama is entirely varied to his earlier projects. I deeply enjoyed working with him. He has a decent personality and is a remarkable human being. He is already iconic as an actor, but as a person, he is even extraordinary. He seems to be a perfectionist at his job and you can often spot him on the set rehearsing dialogues from a piece of paper in his pocket. He works from his heart and I am immensely happy that he has made his comeback in acting.

He has also carried his character well that BushraBaji wrote and he has classified the avatar even more. I guess we made the best choice of selecting him for the role of all the people we thought of.

Off-Screen Pair to be Seen On-Screen for the First Time on TV

Zara and Asad will be seen for the first time in a drama together after their movie Chhalawa. How would you rate their chemistry on-screen?

Bushra Ansari: They will be surely good to watch in the drama as well after starring in Chhalwaa. They already look very sweet together and boast an enjoyable romantic equation.

But they will part ways in Zebaish and will have a different track in the story. Asad is playing the role of my son and Zara is my niece, i.e. Asma’s daughter in the drama. They will get engaged but later life has other plans for them.

Shabbir Jan is also starring in the drama as my first husband. He also has a track with his second wife, Shaheen Khan. The plot also involves a narrative involving an “Astaana”, a spiritual place belonging to Asma and Zara’s character and it will also feature Qavi Khan.

Zebaish’s director Iqbal Hussain is playing a villainous character of Asma’s brother-in-law in the drama. Viewers will enjoy all the variety of twists in the storyline.

Asma Abbas: Both are really cute together and they work less but are more affectionate towards each other at the shoot. Sometimes, BushraaAppa often jokes that they are busy being lovey-dovey on the sets.

They have wonderful chemistry and I have often observed that usually husband and wife face challenges while working with each other. But these two value each other’s work. Asad is a proficient performer with an eight, nine years of experience. And Zara is a natural actress. I feel they should work together in the future as well.

Overall, as a family, we enjoyed a lot. We had fun eating and hanging out together, chatting away on the set, even fighting and gossiping. I really hope this family project of ours will be praised by the audience.
