This is going to be the BIG mystery of this serial. 😉 Even the adoption mystery will be solved soon, although not so soon. In the next episode new characters will be introduced (Indhu's best friend and her family).

Episode 14

Sivanoli Mansion

The episode begins with the ponggal pot boiling. Next Indhu and Shree bring out the ponggal rice and start serving KG and the children: Dhivya, Mahen and Sangheeta. Thava is also there, although he looks only at his food and does not glance towards Dhivya, who feels a bit guilty. She finishes her food quickly and leaves the table.

Indhu notices her husband is still picking at his food long after all the others have finished theirs and left the table. "Ennanga, what is the matter?"

KG looks worried. "You remember I told you there had been a misappropriation of the welfare funds?" Indhu nods. "Well, the Minister is coming down tomorrow to investigate. If this matter becomes public, it will be a huge blow to his ministry. I don't know what to say to him. He entrusted me with heading this department just a few months ago and already I am embroiled in such a crisis."

Indhu looks thoughtful. She flashes back to the day she held an homam for their new house. At the time she had noticed her old foe Arasi exchanging a look with KG's secretary. Moreover, the priest conducting the homam had sensed a bad aura from the secretary.

She decides to speak up and voice her suspicions. "Ennanga, I meant to tell you of this earlier, but with Shree's marital problems it completely slipped my mind. How much do you trust your secretary?"

KG is surprised. "Bhaskar? Well, my predecessor seemed to trust him and gave a good report of him, which is why I kept him on as my personal secretary when I took over the directorate. But personally I don't think much of him." KG looks at Indhu. "Do you think he has something to do with this problem?"

Indhu tells her husband about what transpired during the homam. KG is incredulous. "This is what you're basing your suspicions on? An old priest's imaginings and your high school rivalry with my deputy's wife? And you want me to accuse a man of a serious crime based on this?"

Indhu feels a bit exasperated. "You don't know about Arasi, the lengths she would go to in order to realize her ambitions. And the priest isn't old and senile; he is a highly respected holy man in a famous temple here in Chennai. I didn't tell you to accuse Bhaskar, just to keep him in mind when investigating this matter. Previously you might not have thought to look close to home."

KG scratches his chin thoughtfully. "Maybe you are right. Now that I think of it, Bhaskar is always requesting leave to go on holiday with his family. I do wonder how he has the money for all this with his PA's salary."

He gets up and washes his hands. "Now I have to go and figure out this problem before the Minister arrives."

Indhu smiles and sees her husband off at the door. Just as she is about to go back in, an auto arrives. Indhu is puzzled because she is not expecting visitors. Then she sees who it is. "Katie! Oh my god, it's really you. I didn't expect to see you here in Chennai."

Indhu's best friend from school walks up the steps after paying the auto-driver and hugs her. Smiling she says, "I thought I would make it a surprise. Daniel, bring the bags with you."

Indhu smiles widely. "My goodness, Daniel has grown so much. The last time I saw him he must have been five or six. How old are you now?"

"Almost 14, auntie," replies the boy.

Indhu looks at Katie. "Where is your husband? And your elder son? Didn't they come down with you from America?"

"Patrick is in the middle of his university term, so he couldn't come down with us." Katie hesitates before continuing. "My husband is very busy with his office."

"What's with all these bags? Did you come straight here from the airport?" asks Indhu.

"Yes, we thought we'd visit you first and then go and find a hotel."

"A hotel? Aren't you staying with your parents?"

Katie shakes her head. "No, they are away visiting my brother and his family in Australia for a couple of months. I was hoping you would recommend a good hotel here in Chennai."

"Nonsense! You will stay with us. We have an empty guesthouse."

Katie starts to protest. "Indhu, I can't possibly impose on you. You wrote in your letter that your sister and her daughter were staying with you, and now me and my son too?"

"Don't be silly, Katie. My best friend who I haven't seen in years is down from America and I won't have her and her son staying in a hotel when we have a perfectly good guesthouse empty." Without waiting for Katie's reply she calls for the guard and asks him to take Katie's bags into the guesthouse.

"Indhu, really you don't need to do this …"

Indhu waves her hand at Katie. "No, of course I must. You and Daniel can't live on hotel food while you're here. Now come inside, I'm sure Shree will be delighted to see you. In fact, Dhivya and Mahen will also want to see you. I'll call them to find out where they are and tell them you're here in our house."

Katie stands on the steps looking lost as Indhu hurries into the house. Her son pulls her hand. "Amma, why did you lie to Aunty Indhu about Tatha and Paati?"

"Hush, Danny. I didn't want to cause any trouble here but Indhu has put me in a spot. I should have known she wouldn't let us stay in a hotel. We'd better make do for now. I'll think of a way to get us out of her house before the truth comes out. Come." She takes her son's hand and steps into the mansion.

Thodarum …

Coming up next: Katie's secret makes her a prime target for the vengeful Arasi. Meanwhile Shree's husband causes more trouble for her. And KG gets a phone call from his mother in Sri Lanka! Don't miss the next episode of Sivanoli.

I'd love to hear what you think of this chapter in the meantime. Do you think there are too many subplots running at the same time?
